    I can choose what ever search engine I want. Bing, Wolfram, Yahoo, whatever. It takes me all of 5 seconds.

    Yet when I go to buy my generic prescription medication whose patent expired years ago, it costs twice as much as the harder to synthesize, but still patent protected, specific stereoenantiomer of the same drug.

    When is the FTC going after obvious anti-trust violations like that?

    I've been in a similar situation.

    We called the DA office where I live and asked if they would prosecute dumpers if we had video evidence. The answer was no.

    The only satisfaction you may get is tracking them down yourself and dumping their garbage on their lawn.

    Great post! I'd say power backup to the air conditioning is extremely important. If you don't have this, then you absolutely need environmental monitoring with automatic shutdown.

    He certainly did. The Paulies of the Republican Party are like the Deanies in the Democratic Party. They are pushing for reform in the party, but end up getting crushed by the party machine. The only thing they get in return is token lip service.

    All I can say to the Paulies is keep it up. Every once in a while they'll throw you a bone.

    I honestly did not intend to fill this post with double entendre.

    I gave my kid a 1st gen iPhone with no cell service. Installed a few games. Now I hardly hear from him. The great thing is the battery can't hold as much of a charge so his playing time is somewhat limited.

    Python and m2crypto. I have it coupled with pexpect to do auto login and commands on multiple machines. Saves me a ton of time from having to look in the excel sheet.

    The birds - a lack of STEM jobs, low quality STEM education

    The stone- Pay STEM teachers a lot more- on all levels. Heck, pay teachers more period.

    The jobs open up because teaching becomes a viable career for STEM folk. Education quality goes up because better people are attracted to the career.

    I would love to teach, but I can't give up a living wage to get a credential (or a PhD) with little prospect of being able to survive on a teachers salary.

    I think the UCSC Genome browser has been doing this for a while on their backend, so it might not be new.

    In some cases you can use masks instead of shifting. Even if you do shift bits, processors are so fast compared to I/O that it is still faster.

    Actually, performance would be enhanced by ASCII to 2-bit compression. The performance cost to compress is much less than the I/O throughput gained.

    And in your non-IT work, was there ever an attempt to take away overtime pay? Just because it seems like your union is doing nothing doesn't mean that they aren't useful. A lot of the things we take for granted we have unions to thank for- like the 40 hr work week, overtime pay, etc.
