In my experience, both in Windows and Linux, what doesn't work is almost always non-free software. Flash, Java, LOTS of Windows drivers (like cpu monitoring/throttling stuff, etc), and Windows games are examples. There are workarounds for some of these, and some of them will eventually be patched. But it's a good rule of thumb to keep in mind: open source stuff will be updated much faster than commercial.

You can get by pretty well with 64 bit Linux. I see no compelling reason to run 64 bit Windows yet, unless you need lots of memory. Yeah, you could get a small boost from having more registers, and yeah, it's cool; but the Windows world is just not used to porting to other architectures :). The CPUs have been out, what, 3 years? And it is still a royal pain. And if you game... get used to things like Neverwinter Nights 2 going through the entire 6 cd install, only to tell you "Oh, by the way, 64 bit doesn't work. Ha-ha!"

Furthermore, in terms of lifetimes wasted, they time they cost us surely adds up to many times the lives we've lost due to terrorism. I have the answer, one which will heal the political rift in the US as a side effect.

First, we have the NSA, DHS, et al target their illegal wiretapping programs at spammers and spyware makers. They've got the infrastructure to track these people down, and this is a justification for the programs everybody can get behind.

Second, when a spammer is caught, we ship them down to Gitmo. It doesn't matter, in this case, whether torture is an effective means of getting information. We don't need information from them, we just want them out of circulation. We can hope that it would be a deterrent, but really they'll be getting it for the simple reason that they deserve it. Republican/Christians get to torture and sodomize to their shrivelled little hearts' content, and we don't have to worry about damaging our reputation in the world community. Everybody's happy!

  19. HDTV is 1970's TV of the Future on No Business Case for HDTV? · · Score: 1
Given that they're not likely to be able to pull off such a major forced upgrade to a new technology more than once every 20 years or so, they should have thought about what features would be really meaningful.

Higher resolution and better frame rates are nice. But it would have been much better to add internet type functionality. Picture HDTV with a Wii type remote and out of band information. If you're watching a sporting event, you can look up stats on the players and teams. If you're watching a movie, you can get IMDB type information. If you might want to buy a product that's on-screen, you point at it. It wouldn't take much extra bandwidth to have bounding boxes embedded on the linked objects in the scene-- it doesn't have to be good enough for an FPS shooter, after all. The purchasing option alone would generate enough revenue that it'd be a no-brainer to subsidize the hardware and networks. You could also easily switch between subtitle languages, closed captioning, etc., and none of these things would have to be embedded in the picture in any particular way. The client decides how to render the information. Kind of like a web browser.

HDTV as it stands is just not a compelling upgrade, and attempts to add this functionality now would be very hackish-- especially given that the companies involved, the television, movie, and media industries, still don't understand the benefits of open standards. I'd say the best bet now is Tivo type devices... but unless they standardize, the features will be too expensive and poorly supported to go far.
