...and a Yaris is small and lightweight. This is not impressive. 42mpg is only a marginal improvement (10-12%) over cars that existed 30 years ago. Personal experience: I own a 2002 Volvo V70, 2.4L Turbo I5, and a 1983 Chevy Suburban, 6.2L Diesel V8. The Suburban weighs 2000 lbs MORE than the Volvo and has a much larger engine, and they get THE SAME fuel economy. Technology improvements leading to better fuel economy? Yeah, right.
I have books from the 1700s in perfect condition, and I have read them. Show me a reader device that will be around in 300 years and functioning, or an ebook file that will be in a format we can read in 300 years.
Rational police departments instruct their officers to use a taser when they would otherwise use a gun. There is no other reason for using a taser.
In the county I spent the last 10 years living in, the sheriffs used a taser maybe once per year. And that county had over 100,000 people living there AND has a college town.
I had the privilege of working on Rutan's Vantage jet doing design and S&C verification. At the time, I worked for the only man considered a peer to Rutan, Jan Roskam, though only those in the aerospace industry would know him. The Vantage was a great plane, and Rutan and his company earned my respect and admiration. The respect was mutual, and an engineer who studied under the president of the company I worked for went on to become a VP at Scaled.
Another poster mentioned how there is an obvious lack of good aircraft designers today. Being someone in the aerospace industry, I agree with that 100%. This isn't just a "darn, the kids these days" rant. There is a demonstrable lack of creativity and ability in the younger generation of aerospace engineers. Some of this may be due to a lack of progress in the field (NASA has gone to hell, the USAF doesn't need any more aircraft), some of it could be due to a lack of desire to put in the effort (which is tremendous) to become a great aerospace engineer. I wish I knew. Hopefully soon we will have some truly bright engineers come to the forefront of aircraft design.
So, let me say that it was a privilege to be in the industry both competing with and cooperating with you, Mr. Rutan. I don't know if I'll ever have such a chance again. Thank you for that, and for your contributions to aviation. Best of luck to you.
A more awesome solution would be for the judge to reach under the bench, pull out a huge polished chrome revolver, and shoot the plaintiff for wasting the court's time.
Not enough people get this. Some of the finest aerospace engineers, aerodynamicists, propulsion experts, and space vehicle engineers are Iranian. Many managed to get out so they could realize their potential and live in the US now. Both industry and NASA have a multitude of exceptionally bright and experienced Iranian scientists and engineers.
Iran has significant experience in UAV design. A little known fact is that they are the first nation to deploy an armed UAV in a military conflict (Iran-Iraq War).
Try "Welcome to 2003." Sprint offered live TV service (MobiTV I think) as part of their Vision services back in the day. You could watch something like 15 channels at crazy low resolution on a cheap flip phone.
I get twice the mileage of the comparable gas powered version of my truck. I have an 83 Suburban with a 6.2L Detroit Diesel/Allison V8. It gets 23mpg. A coworker of mine owns a 98 Suburban with a gas 350 and gets 9mpg.
Having owned several 70s and 80s Mercedes, I will attest to the truth of this statement and will amend it:
Anything capable of making the doors come off an '80's Mercedes will have destroyed the rest of the car, and destroyed itself in the process.
I'm never going to forget the cop who was laughing at the accident I was in when some kids in a Chevy Lumina tried to swoop-and-squat me, driving a Mercedes 450SL. There wasn't much left of the Lumina. Or the car in front of it. Or the car in front of that one. I ended up totaling the three cars in front of me. The Merc, bashed and banged up, was still able to safely drive home though, and I was uninjured.
Anyone who suggests a Toyota doesn't care about your well being either.
I had the unfortunate luck of watching a Yaris blow a red light in town and t-bone a Volvo XC90. There was nothing left in front of the firewall, and that had buckled in to the passenger compartment. The passenger was critically injured and the driver died at the scene. Cops at the scene said the Yaris was going about 50mph.
I've watched the experiments. There is interference. An FCC and FAA certified GPS receiver for aircraft loses fix more than 5 miles away from a Lightsquared transmitter.
Their radar isn't that sensitive. If you aren't running a transponder (which screams out "YO DAWG I'M N545CF HERE I AM!!!!" and "HEY HEY HEY HEY MR. AIR TRAFFIC CONTROLLER LOOK AT MEEEEEE" when you ident) they can't see you. They can't see a King Air, they aren't going to see a few strips of aluminum foil.
"Also.. who orders a motherboard before the case? That seems kind of backwards to me."
Someone who has a Dell or HP machine that just had its motherboard fry, and needs a computer quickly. Regular motherboards won't fit in many big-name OEM machines, so just transplant the guts into a new cardboard computer.

Whoa. I've been to Smoky Hill. Its really creepy going through the "urban training area"; the containers arranged into buildings, the bombed out vehicles, the shot-up helicopter...its quite a sight. Don't even get me started on the weird feeling of being the guy in a polo shirt and cargo pants in the midst of fully equipped soldiers and soldiers dressed in Iraqi attire.
"if we all ignore these coocoos, they will go away to whatever fire and brimstone meets them for not loving their enemy, and their neighbor, as thyself"...but it would be really nice to hasten that meeting.
Their power comes from intimidating those who have been emotionally weakened by tragedy. Look for what they do at funerals.
They also like to try and hurt people when they succeed. At every commencement ceremony for the University of Kansas Law School, all of them stand outside and picket. I confronted them once when they were picketing the Engineering School commencement and asked why they were doing so. "Oh, this is the Engineering commencement? Oops, we didn't mean to be here for that. We thought this was the Law School commencement."
They are purely nuts. They have no interest in martyrdom, because they aren't truly religious Christians and they believe that regular people believe in their constitutional rights enough to not harm them. Typically, this is true, as none of them have been killed yet.
True story: a woman driving a pickup in Topeka tried to run over Fred. Police arrested her, she was charged with various crimes. Case went to trial, in less than 10 minutes she was found not guilty on all charges.

I don't know, but I'm heading to Yokohama Sushi at 8th and New Hampshire in Lawrence, Kansas for dinner tonight, and I'm bringing my geiger counter.

YES.

The Volvo driver and passengers were unharmed.

Its called "Death" Valley for a reason..

I didn't hear anything, but for some reason I couldn't open my garage door after watching that.

clearly not from libya.
Same here. The fastest service AT&T will provide at my address is 3Mbps DSL, but this website says they offer 10-25Mbps service.

"There is actually little chance the WBC believes their own crap."
You should listen to the interviews that Megan Phelps (Fred's granddaughter) has done with Kansas City alternative radio station KRBZ 96.5.
I live in Eastern Kansas and have had to deal with these idiots on occasion. They are genuinely nuts.
Look at how QNX does terminal mode, its exactly what you're talking about.
Amusingly, that's where Fred Phelps lives. Is it coincidence that his zip code starts with '666'?
