There are at least a couple of Freemasonry orders where you as part of the rites of ascending in rank have to sacrifice a live animal.

Yeah... unless you can back that one up, I'm going to have to call bullshit on that.

The technical term for this ritual is "Going out to Hooters with the guys for beers and wings", and yes it does involve the sacrifice of dozens of animals. The fact that the actual slaughter is conducted by anointed priests in a remote temple does nothing to change it.

You don't even want to know the body count of the "Putting some burgers on the grill" ceremony. It's abominable.

Maybe I wasn't clear enough for everybody.

If I have to read the entire article just to figure out what the article is about, then what is the point of the summary?

If the summary assumes that I already know everything that is in the article, then what is the point of linking the article at all?

My point is not that I demand that all articles be pre-digested and rewritten in terms understandable to even the most mentally incompetent mouth-breather (There's always C-Net for that), it is that the quality of that summary was abysmal even by Slashdot's traditionally subterranean standards. It was nothing more than a cut-and-paste of a section which had itself been cut-and-pasted from another source, and made no effort to convey any information at all being "Wow, look at what I can do with control V!" Considering the average lifespan of a slashdotted web server is measured in minutes with mirrors and caches being unreliable at best, posting a link and going to the effort of attaching a summary entirely devoid of useful information is just a waste of everybody's time.

What that means is: If you're going to write, then write. If you're not going to bother writing, don't.

Are you independently wealthy and feel that having a bonfire is an insufficiently showy way to destroy a quarter million dollars? Or do you think that your name would sound a lot better with 'Dr' in front of it?

Because I can't think of any other reason to go for a PhD. Unless you think that once you graduate you're going to be one of the three people on the entire continent who somehow manages to get a University job teaching the next generation of misguided students who think that a PhD is a good idea too. And that's just crazy, seeing as most universities can barely afford to keep the faculty they already have and think that "tenure" is a dirty word.

Entering a PhD program may be an effective way to fill the next ten years of your life, but it's not going to help you work in your field. Unless your idea of "working in your field" is traveling to three different schools a week to teach undergraduates while taking home less than minimum wage, in which case you still don't need anything more than a Masters degree.

Why not save yourself some time and aggravation? Borrow a couple hundred thousand dollars from the bank, use it to buy a small sledge hammer and about twenty bottles of Night Train, head down to the waterfront and burn all of the remaining money in a barrel. While you're doing that share all of the wine with whoever else happens to be there and after about two hours of hard drinking and vomiting, try to convince them all to provide feedback on your research. Or ask them what colour the moon is. If you can wake one of the slobbering drunks long enough to tell you "My mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun", then you win. Oh, and the sledge hammer? Smash yourself in the forehead with it every two minutes, and twice if you start to feel like you're making progress.

Congratulations, you've just had the full experience of a PhD program in only one weekend, saving you countless years of otherwise wasted time. For the extended experience make sure to put your drunken binge on your resume whenever you apply for a job, guaranteeing that you will be passed over in favour of someone younger and saner, and try to pay off the huge loan you took out for the rest of your life.

Imagine Apple said, "We won't use iOS on new versions of the iPad, but we'll keep developing it for the iPhone and iPod. iPads will use the full OS X." Would that mean iOS is dead too?

If you wanted an Apple analogy, try "We won't use MacOS 9 for new versions of our desktops and notebooks, but you can still run it on your old hardware. Our new line will use only OS X." And then one year later this happened.

While the Symbian software may be alive and well, its biggest supporter has decided that it is no longer a viable product in the smart phone market and is phasing it out in favour of the Next Big Thing. That's what they do.

Really? They say "We will use Symbian in all but one of our lines, the ones where we sell ~75% of our smartphones", and you see that as "Symbian is dead"? Really?

Last year 100% of their smartphones used Symbian. This year it is 75%. It's not going to stay at 75% next year, though. Can you buy a phone with Symbian OS 6? No, they were phased out in 2003 in favour of Symbian 7. Can you still buy that? Nope, it was kicked to the curb in 2005 so that Symbian 8 and 9 could replace it. If you replace the words "Symbian 10.0" with "Meego" then the next step is obvious.
