"Given that it's more powerful than an N64, I'm sure it could emulate a GB/GBC/SGB pretty well. "
I'm puzzled by the observation that was made. They're saying it can push more polys than the 64 could, but there's no indication if those polys have all the nice texturing filters that the 64 had. I'm worried it'll be more like the original Playstation. In that case, it's not more powerful than the 64, it's significantly less powerful. That means porting of some games may be problematic.
Not trying to be a pessimist, but the 64 hardware, though it seems primitive today, is still pretty damned powerful when putting it in a portable form factor.
"Xbox is no longer a value proposition for open source camps."
Pity this was modded off-topic. It's a valid criticism over the heat Slashdot's dealt MS over the whole "installing Linux on the XBOX" topic. Who really thinks the next XBOX isn't going to be even harder to break? There's nothing wrong with saying "choose your battles".
No hard feelings if I'm modded off-topic here. I'm still a bit bitter that nobody here will take my feelings on this matter seriously. All this flipping off of Microsoft has not helped anybody.
Funny thing was that Nintendo probably won from that bet already. I saw a figure somewhere that said that Rare made up only like 3% of Nintendo's revenue. Some felt that they probably got more from MS's purchase than they would have from the games Rare was making. Here's hoping that Microsoft benefits nicely from it. (Yeah yeah, it's fun to hate Microsoft, but really good news in the video game market, even to Mr. Gates, is good news for everybody.)
I apologize for being off-topic, but it's at least semi-relevent in the sense that this is sorta about E3. Somebody got a photo of the Nintendo DS logo.
The picture's kinda blurry (heh, camera phone?) but it appears to depict two screens, one above the other. Looks like a GBA SP with the lower half being a screen. Not the most exciting photo ever, but a lot of us are itching to see what Nintendo's going to show us tomorrow, figured I'd post it. (No hard feelings if I'm modded down, though...)

"...and I refuse to pay the money to Microsoft to upgrade to a newer Windows OS."
Bummer. The upgrade from 98 to 2k or XP would become worth the money in well under a week. Not only could you set up better permissions for stuff, but they're also harder to break accidentally. I'd point ya that way even though you don't want to, but it doesn't directly solve the problem you specfically asked about.
"Is there any value in Windows-apps-on-Linux solutions which force you to own a copy of Windows anyway?"
Linux has interesting advantages over Windows, right? So if you don't have to boot into Windows to get those advantages, that's good, right? At least from a network admin point of view. Not everything's about cost.
"How many times do people like you have to be corrected before you get it?"
This has nothing to do with correcting anybody. The typical Slashdot response to these sort of things is if Microsoft does it, it's automatically bad for reasons that are invented later, but when Mozilla does it, everybody's suddenly an optimist. My original post was about attitudes towards MS, not about the actual details of what's different and why. Don't bother 'correcting' me on something I didn't even bring up.
"Microsoft doesn't need to explain why it's system is better with the browser integrated into everything, everyone takes it as fact(or debunks it at myth) Why treat mozilla differently?"
Heh. Internet Explorer desktop integration == bad, Mozilla desktop integration == good.
"718 dollars for a two year subscription is kind of hefty in my eyes. How much is xbox live a month? "
About half. But you gotta buy the games and you also gotta buy the system. In the case of Indrema, you don't have to buy the system, but I have NFI if free games come with it or not. All I meant to suggest was that it might be part of it, and it'd be a damned good idea for them to.
"So yeah, if you're into Tetris or solitare or Yahoo! Games, those games are part of the $30 package. The Unreal Tournaments, Doom3 and Half-Live 2 games are going to be quite a bit more... on increasingly dated hardware. Those savings are quickly disappearing. "
You're correct, at least as far as the known facts goes. However, since we don't know what those games are, it's an issue that really cannot be settled today. Just remember they're going to have a hard time competing with Sony/Nintendo/Microsoft if the service isn't worthwhile. As I said before (I apologize for being rude in the last message) you're trying too hard to find something wrong with. Instead, you should be hoping the system is cool when it comes out instead of hoping it dies a horrible death. Would it really be that awful if it turned out to be something worth owning?
"It sounds less and less like a good deal when you add it up over time. "
It sounds less and less like a good deal when you make an attempt to find problems where there, at the moment, are none. Really, the value of it won't be determined until launch. In the mean time, being skeptical isn't being particularly helpful.

Slashdotted, always Slashdotted. Can't blame people for getting into that habit.

First they have sex more often then I do, and now they can enter places I can't? Depressing.

Why was this modded as flamebait while the parent wasn't?

Only 1 comment so far? Oh right, like this story isn't of concern to most of us here.

"Why dedicate time (and presumably money) to continue the lock-in Microsoft Office and similar apps have in the workplace"
Think about why the lock-in happens in the first place, then think about the value of at least getting those lock-in apps running on another OS.
