Windows XP sucks for games dilwad. Windows 98 is still better for games, and you want to get an o.s. that is superior in networking, but inferior in compatibility? Bet you don't even use command line in windows 2000 advanced server. DCPROMO.exe ring a bell?
Look fool, get a grip. You just don't know how to use it properly, you probably ran it in a server pool without SAMBA installed. Windows is cool, yeah, I mean, you can run a whole bunch of programs, and the normal desktop user doesn't care about command line.
BUT.. you are saying this as a network admin, or at least that is where you are coming from. Honestly, I've never run linux, but I've seen it run. I wouldn't even touch it right now, not because it is opensource, but because I don't know the commands.
The reason why opensource will overcome software that is pay-for-play is because of the fact that if the software is decent, then eventually, everyone uses it, if it is not, then no one does.
You spoke of the servers that Microsoft puts out. Yeah, it runs a gui. But wait, in order to run Windows CORRECTLY, even at the desktop level, you have to use the command line. I don't think you have even touched windows 2000 advanced Server, or a 16 processor box for that matter.
You put your comments on a linux based website. My question is, what was the point? I mean, this site is great for news of the I.T. industry, and is biased towards one subject, so why do you go and put down something completely different? Are you bored?
"as an experienced MCSE" Experienced in what? NT 4.0? Is that all? NT sucked, you had to reboot it every time you added something to it, or anything. It was not stable. It lost it's connections with different sites at the worst possible time. Most people I talk to that run linux say that it is the exact opposite. You see, being an experrienced MCSE doesn't mean anything, until you back that up with what you have done. I'm an MCP, I'm experrienced. What does that tell you? That I have experrience in something, and that I shelled out at least 100 dollars or took a beta test for Microsofts Exams. Either way, it don't prove anything.
Anyways, you can't see the trees through the forest. Have a good day, hope you have fun in the opensource millenium.
The previous comment was obviously an attempt at getting so called 'Moderation Points'.
What this person to get a 2 was apparent, the entity known as melquiades went to the trouble of writing 8 miles of jiberish in order to confuse all. He then put in comments that all moderators like to see, bent over, and waited for it...
Admitance is the first step. For taking that step, here is a red chip. The red chip is good for 4 beers at Sharkey's bar and pool hall across the street, after the meeting of course.
In the thick of it all, when I think of comets, make me think of trols the most. How they can contain a comet in the troll living and dining room, and show it off. All trolls have a comet somewhere in the house, the really shiny ones are ornaments on the troll christmas tree.
But with the hair movement in this film, along with the works of final fantasy and others, they are getting pretty close to making this kind of thing... look like real life.
Haven't seen it, how was the star wars trailer anyone?
This is a duh story. It's more of a processor and ram hog because of all the new services, as well as the different kernel and the upgraded version of explorer.exe as the shell. Being that as it may, you can change it to look just like windows 2000, and it runs just as smooth. But out of the box, or new users alike, it's a hog.
802.11 support is turned on automatically, as well as the remote processes. RPC cannot be turned off, only blocked, so this would be another thing.
The shell is one of the major hogs. If you change a registry entry, the exact is at regedit.com it splits the backround from the taskbar, and increases perfomance, as well as when you turn off all the appearance features and go for the performance.
Luckily the.NET servers come with the performance as standard, ALTHOUGH, it does come with the gui for the nice blue taskbar, etc. On a server? Nuts..NET also comes with share point portal server, a sort of internal web server for corporate networks. Not sure on what else it does.
Back to XP. With windows there is a program that works like fvwm in linux, it's called litestep and gives you 3 to up to umpteen virtual desktops. I've seen 64 used, although I don't see why after 4 or 9. The windows XP power tools, located on the microsoft website, give you something called msvdm, and it has 4 virtual desktops, with which you can put a different backround on each virtual desktop. Power tools also has a graphics calculator, and some other neat things. Power tools is made, but not supported by, Microsoft developers.
But with that said, XP is more stable than windows 2000, a little better driver support, not much though. It only makes sense though that an upgrade from Microsoft would take up more resources. The new pentium 4 2 gighz is out, and the 64 bit intel comes out next year sometime.....
I have a windows ac unit pointed at the open case of my server. Condensation is my biggest problem, but once you get past that, it works fine. Cools it down much better than the ole fan ever did.
You need an OEM to even get the chance to touch a MS Datacenter Server. You can buy advanced server off the shelf, but datacenter server is where the big bucks are, so of course they made it so that you have to go buy it direct from manufacturer, with all extra features.
Please know what you are talking about before you post again.
The problem is, the initiative was only started a short time ago. This will most likely prompt other corporations to not even try something of this magnitude, this scale, and this... importance. Tell me the last time that a multi-billion dollar corporation gave you a computer (excepting your five finger discounts) and all of your co-workers a computer, and I'll tell you how pigs fly.
As to all this other talk about the jobs, in the most part these people have worked there all their lives, and their fathers and grandfathers. It would probably be assumed that they know the innards of a ford engine from top to bottom, but not a thing about computers. Some may, who knows? Nothing against the guys, but it probably didn't interest them. Now take those guys out of the setting (and women too) and tell them bye, good luck, don't let the door hit your bum on the way out, and maybe, just maybe, they might get interested in other things, fast. Could be good, could be bad... Time will only tell.
millions of people know how to hack linux. How many jobs are there for that?

Nautilus runs as fast as Windows
does in IDE mode when running on SCSI.
This is a joke, right?
I do not believe he would have written
it that way unless he meant for it to be serious.
I believe you are anti-scsi. It may be because
you are still using a 286, or maybe you are
jealous that he has scsi and that you don't.
Either way, he has his own preferrences, and
you have yours. Get off his case.
You've posted at least three times that people
complaining about Nautilus' speed (or lack thereof)
should ditch their IDE drives and go to SCSI.
Perhaps this guy prefers scsi, and you don't.
Or perhaps he is making a valid point. IDE is
only so many wires, and scsi has so many more.
Plus with the ability to put up to 15 drives
on there, you can find someones old 500 meg
scsi drive that they will give you, and give
yourself another page file or some other use
for it, without saying "You know, I can't really use
that drive, I already have 4 drives hooked up
to my eide controller", assuming that you do
not use raid. I believe you may be in love with eide,
or even ide, because you may not yet have the
capabilities of eide. Who knows?
You might want to jump a little, I'm
gonna throw some basic logic at you.
AHHH..
If the Windows file manager runs as fast
on IDE as Nautilus does on SCSI, you can make
two conclusions: (1) SCSI is not any faster
than IDE, and Nautilus is just slower than the
Windows FM. (2) SCSI is faster than IDE, and
Nautilus is a lot slower than the Windows FM.
SCSI IS FASTER THAN IDE AND EIDE!!! Any A+
certified technician can tell you this. Even my
little 13 year old brother can tell you this.
Let me call him in here, I will tell you what he and
I talked about...
Hi brother.
Hi
Which is faster EIDE, or SCSI
SCSI is
So you see, it would be of great advantage to know more
than my 13 year old brother does.
Either way, you're not helping your case.
While we're on the subject, you might want to
consider that if only one device on the
controller is speaking, SCSI has no real
advantage over IDE. That means for most desktop
systems, which only have one hard drive, IDE is
perfectly sufficient and a hell of a lot
cheaper. Do your own research: here's the first
link [acc.umu.se] I found at google on the subject.
I would assume that if you have scsi, you have more
than one drive connected. So this argument is way
down the tubes already. Ha.
So drop your ridiculous SCSI fetish and recognize
that Nautilus is just slow (even according to your
own damned post).
If you were to put it on a decent processor,
and by decent, I mean anything over 486 dx2, you
would probably be doing better. Hmm.... or maybe
you just don't know how to set it up. Who knows?
Quite honestly, I do not even want to attempt to
set up nautilus, but I have heard great things
about it. You are just jealous of the guy
because he knows more than you do. Either that,
or you just posted because you felt like it. If
you could keep this down to a smaller amount,
then it would probably be better for the servers.
Sounds almost like you are on aol, except with
the ads. That's about the speed I had on aol
when I was on it, and I just called a friend,
he's on aol, and that's what speed he gets.
Why don't you just go get aol. They cost roughly
the same, and have such great tech support!
Maybe there should be a 'kharma whore' option for the moderators, like the offtopic option that I will be getting.
You probably need delpart.exe for this one.
Too bad my karma sucks, or I would have had points.
And a beowulf cluster of those bewulf clusters...
