I don't have anything against the GPL license, it surely has it's own (maybe even big) place in the software universe.
However, I don't think that even the majority of the software companies, used to deal with closed source, know what GPL means.
BSD license is VERY clear and simple. LGPL is somewhat clear. GPL then...well... I have not yet seen a good and BRIEF explanation on for example : what in practise - makes the GPL spread to new code - when does your software become automagically governed by GPL? Where's the magic line. I think I can somewhat imagine myself where the magic line is but I am not able to express this in one simple sentence which would not leave any exceptions. Can you? If yes, please post it here. It would make it much easier for many.
I can very much understand even the feelings of those who think "GPL is a virus" before someone can express it's meaning without sounding like a hippie, if you know what I mean:)
(I suppose you are talking about a job interview:)
ofcourse it depends of the type of work and team he/she is going to do and join. I don't think there's any magic in it. Once, for example, I talked with our new foreign employee and my present friend only via Irc, for maybe 6 months. That time was long enough to cover all kinds of things, and to solve some real problems along the way - do some teamwork.
That might not have worked in most of cases. Anyway, I think it's generally good that the whole team meats and possibly even "works" with the new possible team members, and make the decision together. That way, everyone has the chance to say "u suck", in time.
So, maybe I think there should be some kind of traditional formal interview part but I think that atleast as important is - especially if you have never met the person before - to do something together.
Sk1llz are not all that matters, I think that the co-operating skills are maybe even more important than being a guru in anything or even everything.
I don't do recruiting for my work, but this is the feeling I have got.
I belive that for the user experience the difference must be just a few percents - especially on a palm device with a limited resolution and screen size. Ofcourse, the coolness factor can decrease by 99%, but that does not matter in reality.
We once designed a somewhat "smart" software controlled character for Ultima Online. The idea was that it would be thought the basic available possibilites: what you can do, and how. And then give it a goal and see if it achieves it and if it learns anything new.
Well, this was one of the things that was never done. Anyway, it would be really nice to see a MMORPG in which it would be allowed to create your own software controlled androids - and see how they survive and mix with real -human controlled -players. Not just "bots" that complete simple routines, but something that tries to learn, evolve and survive in that world.
Ok, I used to pirate music and gamez when I was a kid. But since then I have realized that it is just the same as stealing that CD or game from the store. And I don't shoplift.:)
Anyway, I think that they are using a wrong approach to tell people that software or any other piracy is a bad thing. Currently, it seems that they just wish to publish the capture of the big fished. What I suggest, is that they would nail a couple of "innocent" senior citizens with one pirate CD instead. Anyone, who is not nowadays thought as a pirate but still has one or two illegal copies will do. That should make people think.
Meanwhile, they should ofcourse nail the big ones too, but these joe average cases are the ones that should be passed to media, I think.
> Looks like you're confused. The 'confuse' link points to a silhouette of a fetus, not the breastfeeding pic.
Ohh, that's what it means. I understood the whole sentence as the origin of this confusion. IMHO, the whole article was confusing, not the data in voyager.
Nothing has changed really. If you put this 25 years in perspective, we have not even invented anything important. A couple of wars fought, a few new ways to use old inventions created, escape from trousers that kills your genitals completed (although there are signs of this behaviour is in the air again said MTV when I last watched it a year or so ago). 25 years is nothing.
Why? I still believe it's a rather good road-show. It could be much more outdated. All the information containted there is still very much valid. Breast-feeding is still normal practise:) Maybe seeing a breast just scares the nerds and that's why it confused you?:) *no offense*

His work is a bit wider than just the CRC which by itself is "just" cyclic redundancy check. He talks about error-CORRECTING.
the "error-correcting-guy" has his homepage here, his papers are here. Really interesting stuff. But what can you expect from a guy whose hairstyle has similarities to Einstein's:)
"Buy Encore's Simputer
Encore's Software is launching a limited number of Evaluation pieces soon. To be a "Encore Simputer Beta-Evaluator" please contact for more details. "
here's the rest.
I quess this is the essentials from that article, which has lots of useless details, including description of someone's long-distance romance:)):
" More than 300,000 people have signed up for the service from BB Technologies Corp., a subsidiary of Tokyo Internet company Softbank Corp. That's easily more than three times the estimated U.S. consumer market. The service, which began in April, doesn't require a new telephone. With a book-sized modem, one gets voice quality comparable to that of regular voice lines -- at a fraction the cost.
Subscribers to Softbank's Yahoo broadband Internet service get voice over Internet for free. Non-subscribers pay about $10 per month including modem rental after a $30 installation fee. Users keep their same phone number. The broadband service is an asymmetric digital subscriber line that runs over existing wires."
> Seems like a pretty simple and useful concept, actually... something like a GPL for hardware specs.
There's already something close to what you suggest, I believe. The simputer project's one outcome is the SGPL - Simputer General Public License:
"The SimputerTM General Public License (the SGPL) is based on the GNU General Public License but, due to the essential dissimilarities between the types of intellectual property being distributed, is significantly different. "
> SOMEONE is gonna get a big fat bill from their ISP for idiotically giving their entire neighborhood access to it.
Why? If I order a certain amount of bandwidth from my ISP, I can use it in any way I want unless I signed a contract which limits the usage by some other terms as well.
> It has no sound economic foundation to support it
BLEEP, wrong. ISPs want to currently sell you a fixed-rate of bandwidth. Until they start really charging per amount transferred, free WiFi makes perfect sense. Is that a sound economic foundation, maybe not, but atleast it is more sound than selling an unlicensed spectrum whose quality you can in no way guarantee.
" Open Hardware is engineers sharing their designs with each other through the disclosure of their schematics and software systems used on their designs. Do you remember the time when you purchased a circuit board, or computer, and the schematics came with it? I do..."
I recently exchanged a word with Rahul Matthan, who has been involved with the simputer project. Simputer has progressed well, and it will soon hit the stores, it seems. If you have not checked the site lately, it might be worth a visit now.
A brief introduction to the simputer to those who don't already know:
"The Simputer is a low cost portable alternative to PCs, by which the benefits of IT can reach the common man. "
The system software is available under GPL, and the hardware specs under SGPL, the full licensing info is here.
Kohan? Reminds me of 'I'm a Yankee Doodle Dandy'. Never heard of it. I must be a dinosaur already. Pacman, Invaders and Digger are big names. And they are all available for download:))
Even if that CD costs $4242 in the store, it's a product. If you want it, buy it.

Hehe, this thread of ours is getting long :)) but... because you can get it much cheaper if you make one bigger order (one faster connection).
I don't have anything against vegeterians either </in our "How to cover up a typo" series> ;))

Is anything like this happening already?
I mean other than the Eutelsat Hotbird 6, apparently it had the capacity to carry something else as well.
I tried to surf the sites to find information on the cargo. Any pointers?
...I am just hoping he Purrpurrrs to send me spam. I am looking for new business partners :)
Not so many probably. But maybe the entire neighborhood is? :)
...will buy this and use it for practising for the shuttle hi-jack.

Does not fit my concept of vaporware but is very concrete. Encore seeks distributors, OEMs for Simputer
and as extra: Production of Simputer to begin by month-end.
