    How about another kind of distribution? Multiple NAS modules on a campus, at different locations. If you have a fire, you only lose one box. Maybe two.

    As opposed to having your NOC wiped out. (Though that should be extremely in a well-worked-out setup, anyway.)

    I hate it when people start throwing around talk of huge profits. Last time, it spawned a lot of companies later called ".bomb"s...

    Not that I think Google will fail...but a massive rush of investment into Linux businesses could lead to another serious round of hype.

    at least with redhat, you won't be giving them the click-by-click on all those viruses and crap in addition to solving their real problem.

    That's assuming one of two things. Either 1) The person needing assistance is reasonably familiar with UNIX (not necessarily Linux...the core concepts are still there.) or 2) The person needing assistance hands over shell account.

    In my experience, and I did technical support for five years), the same is true with Windows. If you get someone who's somewhat familiar with Windows, you shouldn't have a problem walking them through the solution to their problem.

    I accomplished the same thing with a PVC Y-pipe and a couple of speakers. Put the speakers on both "arms" of the Y.

    You run the same signal through both speakers, but invert the phase on one of the speakers.

    And that was in high school AP physics.

    That's a great idea. Especially if you filter by content, rather than domain name.

    Many porn sites include every sexual keyword they can think of, in order to attract the attention of search engines. (Not that that works well with google, what with PageRank rating by links.)

    So pester Macromedia to fix Dreamweaver. You can't expect a majority of the websites out there to be run be people who actually know the language. There's too many useful tools like Dreamweaver and (ack) FrontPage out there.

    Thinking of which...is HotDog still around? I haven't heard anything about them for years..

    Here in Grand Rapids, MI, we've got the Van Andel Arena, the Van Andel Institute, and the Van Andel Museum.

    I don't use the Arena, and never heard of the Institute until I googled for Van Andel, but the museum is pretty cool. I've got a family member who provided the artifacts for an exhibit, and my name is on one of those doner-bricks in the main hall.

    As for Jay Van Andel, well, he was a founding member of Amway.

    How do you know that? Have you ever heard of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation?

    Not that I like Bill by any stretch. He justifies tyranny in one respect with philanthropy in other areas.

    I thought it clear that Keck didn't mean it was humerous. He meant that Keck thought it ironic, almost silly, that classmates and/or his teacher didn't see him or turn him in.

    Noisy ads are a PITA. Especially at the campus computer lab I work in. The Dell boxen have built-in speakers that serve as a mono sound output, and IT hasn't gotten around to disabling them in BIOS. (You could disable sound with a ghost image, sure, but that screws over the people who use Sam & Tom, and other applications that are still useful with headphoens.)

    Speaking of disruptive (or annoying) sounds...they're doing something in the elecrtonics lab upstairs that sounds like the warp core of the STTNG Enterprise.

    I'll go to the dentist with the really good teeth.

    He takes care of them in such a way that they don't have to be serviced (often.) And I'd rather have a person that takes care of their teeth taking care of mine.

    For one of my three fillings, the dentist didn't use anesthesia. DAMN that hurt. And I was only 6 years old.

    They locked the door, too, so my mother couldn't get in to find out what all the screaming was about.

    There was a piece about that on NPR recently.

    Basically, holding students back wasn't improving the dropout rate; peer opinion caused many students to drop out out of shame.

    Instead, what some schools are doing is hiring tutors who specialize in reading or mathematics, wherever the greatest need is for the students. If you can catch a student before he falls too far behind, you can teach him the joys and advantages of whatever subject he's having difficulty.

    The really funny thing is that such lawsuits would largely be useless. If your victim has money, why would he be asking for donations?

    In expert mode, is that really a bug?

    I mean, I may not want to install modules for all the equipment in my machine when I first install. I may want to install a vender module, or I may be on an embedded system that doesn't have a whole lot of extra room for a fattened kernel.

    That's especially true with PCMCIA cards. Better to let card services load the card on insert than have the machine waste time on bootup looking for it when it's not there.

    Even faster than mine...my best box is a 750MHz Duron.

    I'm still debating between dropping in a 1.4GHz Athlon (Thunderbird core) or buying components for a new box. Probably cheaper and more convenient to upgrade the CPU, since I won't have to change a darn thing in software.

    In politics, mob view tends to adopt the most negative option available.

    And certainly there's danger. I personally would demand peer review and extensive testing. If self-reproduction must be used, make damned sure you've got an effective system to eliminate the bugs. Which is why I suggested flourine gas elsewhere.

    As a gas, flourine has the capability to seep into porous materials. UV will only get bugs on the surface.
