Yup, It isn't out for the PC yet. (I am sure they delayed the PC launch as to maximize console profits where piracy is less of an issue.**cough cough**
I was looking forward to buying this game, but now with UBI-Soft's great DRM scheme, I may wait for a "fix" to come out before I even consider buying or installing it.
Nice.
Play with it. I use this as an introduction to my grammar unit at the start of the year to impress the importance of grammar/punctuation to my students. The origin? I have no idea. I first saw this in college, but I have seen it in a book about grammar, "Eats, shoots, and leaves". So it has been around for a while.
The answer is really two fold with a lesson.
Answer one:
Dear John,
I want a man who knows what love is all about. You are generous, kind,
thoughtful. People who are not like you admit to being useless and inferior.
You have ruined me for other men! I yearn for you. I have no feelings
whatsoever when we’re apart. I can be forever happy. Will you let me be
yours?

Answer two:

I want a man who knows what love is. All about you are generous, kind,

You have ruined me. For other men, I yearn. For you, I have no feelings

Lesson: You think Punctuation is unimportant? You are wrong. Punctuation carried the Entire meaning of what we write. We do not have voice inflection, hand gestures or eye contact as we do when we communicate vocally. In the first letter, John is going to get laid. In the second letter, John is going to get a restraining order against him. Wouldn't it be nice for John to know what he is getting into?
Here is a simple exercise. Answer the following prompt? Can you do it? I'll post the answer in a reply.
Punctuate the following letter. You cannot remove words or letters, not can you add words or letters. The order of the words must remain the same. You can only add punctuation and capitalization when required due to punctuation. Go ahead and copy/paste this into notepad/emacs/vi. Good Luck.

Well this got a reboot in the 80s with the movie, maybe a re-reboot is in order?
There are too many sci-fi stories out there that need to hit the screen before we get reboots of old ones. Where is? Ender's Game, Antares Dawn, Startide Rising, Fire in the Deep, Armor?
I'd love to see Ender's Game in 3d. "The enemy's gate is down..." and our orientation would switch appropriately....
Most businesses or schools will have an Acceptable Use Policy. To paraphrase the AUP where I work, A person must have permission to install 3rd party software. This permission must come from building administration or Tech Department administration. If Joe Employee installs Seti without permission, that could be cause for termination. If I install Seti in my buildings' computers, it will be because I gave myself permission to do so. (Which I have, so I did.)
However, this case seems to be with a difference of opinion. Ftfa: '"We support educational research and certainly would have supported cancer research," said Higley superintendent Denise Birdwell. "However, as an educational institution we do not support the search for E.T."'
This is why the Tenure system was instituted. To prevent dismissals due to political or idealogical reasons. To say he would allow protein folding but not seti is asinine. When I decided between the two, I figured that finding ET would have a greater impact on society that a cure for cancer. Who knows, maybe ET will be able to help us cure diseases while curing diseases will not help us find ET.
This was attempted before with Free-Pc.com (Now it is just a parked domain). This was back in 1999. 10000 free Compaq computers were given away. In return people gave up personal information/demographics/hobbies/etc in return for a PC that had advertising on the screen 24/7. Source.
The attempt was a bust if I recall right.
But this is 10 years later; we have come a long way in targeted advertising. If anyone can do this, it is Google.
The teacher owns the material, it is they who develops it and in no way has to do with the schools.
This is obviously from someone outside of the educational system. What the teacher develops has everything to do with the schools.
The teacher develops the material, devises a way to teach lessons that cover "state standards" and "District standards." The school districts should (good ones do this) outline their educational goals for the teachers to follow. It is not enough to state, "Our Goal is to educate the youth." A teacher could educate Sally and Johnny to be prostitutes and achieve the school district's goal.
Using that example, if my child learned inappropriate/illegal behavior from the teacher, I am going to go straight to the school board and ask why they condoned this activity. It is in the school district's best interest to know and understand what goes on in the classroom.
What the teacher teaches in his or her classroom is really a reflection of the values of the current school board and the community which elected the board. A literature class teaching Gay/Lesbian literature may be a required class in California. But If a teacher taught this class in "Smallville, Midwest," the teacher and the school district would be answering questions about the use of the curriculum.
In our district, Teachers develop their curriculum. It can be "purchased" from text book companies (ug), self created, a collaborative work from several teachers, a join project from a university, hell, the curriculum could come from a dream the teacher had. But the curriculum has to be submitted before a committee of parents, students, teachers, school board members and administrators. The teacher to use the curriculum explains how the new curriculum meets state standards, district standards, and how it will help X,Y, and Z types of students. To get a curriculum changed and set in place is about a 2 year process and works well.
In short, the teacher's curriculum has everything to do with the schools.
I tried reading the article, but the place is apparently slashdotted. What I first thought of is not carbon emissions, or air circulation, but snow.
When I shovel snow A scoop weighs around 10 pounds (4.5 Kilograms). Spread that over a mile dome. A foot of snow would be around 27.9 million cubic feet of snow on top of that dome. Now we are looking at 280 million pounds (126 million Kilograms) sitting on top of something that "the biggest challenge would be keeping it from floating away."
I wouldn't want 140,000 tons collapsing on top of my bicycle or monorail car.
The following was from the first paragraph of the email:
should say something that indicates that the email excerpt was from Amazon's reply. Feel free to change it in your mind to "The following was from the first paragraph of the email response from Amazon:"
Sorry for ambiguity. Would love an edit option if no one has replied to a post.
The reason is straight forward: I asked for a refund. The book I ordered had no cover or table of contents/index. For a reference book, this is unacceptable. There was another version with chapters, etc. So I purchased the one I needed and then sent an email asking for a return.
The following was from the first paragraph of the email:
I've requested a refund for "NAME OF BOOK OMITTED". Issuing a refund also removes access to the file. If the item is still on your Kindle, please delete that copy. After the refund is issued, you will no longer be able to access it.
Well, I watched for it, and not only was access to the file removed, The file is no longer present.
Amazon has the Kill-switch ability to delete content. I am going to assume they have the ability to delete my personal content I add to through the USB.
My favorite aspects of the game have been talked about already: Anti-protagonist, scarcity of items, large full levels, great atmosphere, etc...
What I'd love to see is A multiplayer version. Co-op, Anti-Co-op (Get the golden statue before the opposition does. -- Wouldn't it be a hoot to fire a noise arrow in the direction you think an opponent is hiding while the guard is searching for you both.), Guard vs Thief (one sided capture the flag.)
Personal anecdote:
I have loaned my Kindle 2 to students (High school) I know it has been dropped and probably abused and smashed in backpacks. I have dropped it twice from about 1 meter each time. It still works like a champ. The Kindle 2 is sturdy.
I take it to the beach and even out and read when I get stuck on the golf course while it rains. In wet/windy/sandy environments, I just put the kindle in a clear, ziplock-type baggie, and it is easy to read and protected from the elements.
I don't think too many people worry about dropping it or taking it to the beach.
How about "judging by complaints?" If you get complaints about the teacher from parents (that aren't about the teacher being too difficult or strict -- i.e., not unreasonable or stupid on the part of the parents) then listen to them and fire the teacher. It's really that simple!
I teach in a small community. It is really easy to start a "word of mouth" campaign to get complaints into the school board. In this small rural community, I was the only male with hair long enough to be pulled into a pony tail. (I waited until I got my tenure to grow it out). After I showed up to school with a pony tail, there were many complaints that I was a poor/unqualified/destructive/untrustworthy/etc teacher. Quite a few complaints came from community members that did not have kids in school. The gossip mill in a small community is a powerful thing. If we start using a "Complaint Standard" to dismiss teachers, it will be really easy to call up a teacher and say, "I want my little Johnny to get an A in your class. If not, all of my relatives (95% of the community) will notify the school board that you can't teach.
Remember the Amazon/EA fiasco with the negative reviews over the DRM. The majority of the reviewers had not even purchased that game. Those reviews should not be credited.
Yet, I received many bad reviews from people that have no involvement (ie no kids) in my class. I invited everyone that submitted a signed complaint (I couldn't invite the anonymous complaints.) to the school board to attend any of my classes whenever they withed. Each and every time a community member sat in my class (several times) they walk away impressed with what we did. (The students published a book last year and did community education projects.) A few of the community members asked for "Adult" versions of what I taught the students as they got involved and wanted to learn more.
So in short, the idea to fire teachers because of a magic number of complaints are filed is wrong.
Recently? Sure have. I use it twice a day at least. Used it just now. Every couple of months, google changes something. Just check http://www.viksoe.dk/code/gmail.htm and an update is usually there the next day. I have a drive mapped to it on work machines. Nice stuff.
I looked but I can;t find google's CC button for this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZA1NoOOoaNw
