If you are trying to edit the final Makefile output from configure, then you have already screwed up...
Whatever. Point made -- installing stuff just isn't as easy on a linux box. Even if you have a package manager (like Debian's "apt"), there will still be some packages you can't get... or that are broken... I'm not saying that this sort of thing doesn't happen on windows, it's just more frequent in linux.
is the official aim client that comes with NS on linux better than their stand alone one?
First off, I think Netscape on a linux box is just *wrong*. It offers no extras over mozilla, and because of all the bloat it's a little more unstable.
Second, I've used Gaim for quite a while and haven't turned back. I've tried aol's linux IM, but it really sux compared to Gaim... but I guess that's just one man's opinion.
I prefer mozilla as well... I like the fact that you can download *just the browser* and nothing else if you want to. I don't get a browser because it comes with news, mail, chat, and a goddamned isp. The only thing I have to "strip" out of mozilla are a few bookmarks I'll never use, but even so, those bookmarks are nicely kept in one folder so if I want I can delete them all at once.

You know how all the Slashbots complain about WINE, saying that it's going to marginalize native Linux applications like OS/2's Windows compatibility layer did?
Well, it cuts both ways, folks.
I don't think so. Most geeks run linux/unix because it's stable, it's free, and it's open-source. The only reason a Geek would run windoze is because he can't play Everquest (or almost any other decent game) under wine...
I feel that if you *could* flawlessly run any game using wine or vmware or whatever, you'd see a lot of geeks on Karana shouting "lvl 24 Gnomish mage RUNNING LINUX Looking for Group"
...and other geeks would flock to him, wanting to be in his group.
Let's face it... the only thing a geek would want with windows is cool apps that won't run on any other OS! Personally, I think M$ could make a lot of money if they commercialized some sort of windows emulator for linux/unix.

I got bit by a radioactive spider once. Didn't get any special powers, but I did lose a lot of hair.
And on that note... if you were in a museum and just heard about some uber-spiders that the scientists had made and *one was missing*... wouldn't you tell someone if you were bittten by a technicolor spider? I'd at least squash the damn thing instead of watching it crawl away.
Oh common! After all the crap we get from Linux users every time an exploit is found in Windows, you have to expect that were going to give you guys some shit when it happens to you, primarliy because it doesn't happen that often.
...so when an exploit is found in linux, we're supposed to switch to a system that you admit has more exploits?
I, personally, would have put up a link to BeOS or Amiga or something. Perhaps a link to buy a SPARC machine would work, too.
Lob all you want, but dont forget that that same inept government developed the internet or at least what became the internet, and without it, you would still be posting comments like yours on dial up BBS's
I think I've found my next calculator purchase... but I'll wait until I see some reviews. I made the mistake of getting an hp 49G, but the 48GX would have been a better choice... The processor is a little slower, but it's got the same amount of RAM (or can at least be expanded to the same amount of RAM), I'm a little more familiar with the 48 family, and, well... everyone else says that the 48GX is better.
I gave up Windows completely a year ago (except TurboTax on my wife's laptop.) Guess what? I smoke a hell of a lot less pot and spend at lot less time on the computer overall. Why? Same reason. Games.
Man, you must be playing one killer game of nethack!
Does anyone know of a similar article that pertains to embedding windows (or some other OS)? I'd like to see a comparison.

Dude, admins like that deserve to loose some of their user base.
Besides, in some versions of FF you can change your browser's ID so it answers as netslave or internut exploder would.
