If the device could be made cheap enough, and enough people had them, they could establish a psuedo network, which doesn't rely on main lines (such as power/cable/phone) that could be destroyed or damaged in a disaster/attack.

Maybe I'm just too much of a dreamer, eh? Probably 100+ years from now we'll have something like this.

    3) Difficult (if not impossible?) to use any other file system type in Windows, other than FAT32/NTFS. See reason #1.

Hey, let's post an Ask Slashdot question asking about Windows XP security/settings, and fail to mention:

    1) What application we're using that requires these settings.

    2) What our user setup is like. Are the users in the "Users" group, or the "Administrators" group? Are they part of the local machine, or a networked setup of users?

    3) Where this application is being installed to. Have we tried other locations? What permissions does it need?

    4) What you are doing exactly to remove permissions; what users/groups?

Maybe with the details, we can provide a more proper answer. K thanks bye.

but as id and Epic have shown us, it really isn't that hard to write code that is fairly portable to begin with

There's the flaw; HL2's game engine is inherently built upon DirectX. "Simply porting it" to work on Linux would require quite a bit of work. You'd have to port the graphics elements to OpenGL, and then figure out what library to use to handle standard inputs, sound, etc. for multiple pieces of hardware -- all stuff which Linux is severely sucking at. Until Linux has a "DirectX" type layer, it will not get mainstream support from the game developers.

You might hate Microsoft, or hate Windows, but at least they've got a pretty much unified way of communicating with the plethora of devices out there (controllers/video cards/audio cards/midi cards/network cards) with a single interface (DirectX.)

Uh, huh. Right. How are you going to detect pirated copies again?

I'm pretty sure Microsoft knows what keys it has issued, and which ones haven't. You hit the server with an unissued/unknown key, that's a pretty big sign that you're in the wrong.

Maybe look for more than N auth requests per day from different IPs?

Funny that you mention that; the authentication servers have a mechanism similiar to this built in. Keeps people from installing on multiple machines and activating on multiple IPs. If you do it spread out within a certain time period, you're fine. But otherwise your key probably gets flagged and you have to call to get a new one.

You can upgrade your hardware just fine without having to reactivate. I've gone through a GeForce3, to a GeForce4, to an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro, and never had to reactivate.

    mbsacli /baseline

Wait until the security CAB file downloads. MBSA will then start to scan, displaying "Scanning.." on the screen. At this point you can CTRL+C and load up the graphical MBSA.
