No idea what point you are trying to make here.

The DS just proved you are wrong. The money is everywhere, but you have to go and take it. The DS proves most of the money for games is NOT on hardcore gamers.

Repeat after me: The Wii is not the DS. The PSP is not the PS3.

By your logic, Sony will clearly destroy everyone, because the PS2 did last time, right? Its a specious argument, doesn't hold up.

The DS just proved you are wrong. The money is everywhere, but you have to go and take it. The DS proves most of the money for games is NOT on hardcore gamers. Actually, the Sims proved it too, but you have a problem admitting hardcore 3D USA gamers are a minority. People who bought Super Mario Bros are what put the game industry there, not people playing Halo.

Ah, well if the 'money is everywhere' as you wisely claim, why hasn't Nintendo just mopped the floor with Sony and MS a long time ago? Go check your DS sales figured again dude. The PSP and the DS are pretty much neck and neck. The Lite gave Nintendo a boost a few months ago, but people in China seem to love the PSP. Go figure, its a big world.

The Sims was the first game that any appreciable numbers of women wanted to play. That is the 'new segment' I was talking about in my original post.

Super Mario Bros may have been one of the first console games to be really popular but the market was tiny back then. I guess it depends on where you start, and what you call 'success'. I tend to think videogames became 'mainstream' when the sports titles started shipping for Sega's consoles. But to each his own.

Like with the DS. Not taking risks won't make you go anywhere.

Disagree. Microsoft proves that the safe route is almost always the most commercially successful route. Sad as that is. If you're willing to take gambles like Nintendo is, then you potentially win big or lose big.

That must be why PS2 is outselling XBox360 by 25+ times in Japan today. You know, I wouldn't be surprised if the Wii and PS3 outsell the total number of XBox360 when they launch in Japan, in 2 months time.

I will in fact be shocked if that doesn't happen. Xbox360 is a 'gaijin' console. There are cultural factors at work. Know how many Ford cars sell in Japan?

To me, the XBox360 is already a failure. I think most of the buyers of XBox360 have bought it already. People don't wait till the other products are out to buy, or that means they're actually waiting for the new products. When I see the number of people buying PS2 instead of XBox360 in Japan, and knowing most of the XBox360 buyers live in the USA, I have a very hard time believing the XBox360 will have even 30 % of the market. As for the PS3, I don't know.

Too early to tell, but I tend to agree about the X360. Its a shame. Now, if some huge game came out of nowhere next week (for example) and was a blockbuster hit, that could change. But it had no Halo for launch, and I think that really hurt them. PS3, yeah I don't know either. It really depends on the games.

Nonsense. By that logic, the PS2's sales "say that you are wrong". Because it led before, right? Specious logic.

I think the DS is a hit for a very simple reason: the developers stepped up and delivered some great little games for it that used the stylus and microphone in fun and interesting ways. I credit Nintendo for a pretty good design (I hated the original, but I like the Lite); I credit the game creators for making it popular.

The Wii could very well be a runaway hit as well, I did not discount that possibility in my post, but it will require a HUGE hit game to make that happen. And Red Steel will not be it.

Yes the article is completely speculative. But don't think for one second that the majority opinion of slashdot is in any way indicative of the general public. (I refer you to the original iPod posting.)

While the nerd crowd here can look at the Wii (uh, that name...) and be pleased with the innovative interface, the low price, the focus on gameplay over graphics and yes, substance... this isn't how the marketing will flow.

Sony will drive dumptrucks of money to ad agencies all over the planet. It will be like a blitzkrieg of PS3 as we approach the launch; I wouldn't be surprised if they spent $100 million on ads alone. Microsoft will counter, having anticipated this for years, and probably roll out their own add-on HD drive as well - more marketing insanity to follow.

Nintendo will of course do their own marketing push, but don't be surprised if you hate the approach they take. Big N is after 'the rest of us', the non-gamer, and will appropriately tailor their messaging to this end. That means, more girls, more moms, more people who do not typically play video games. Yes, there will be Metroid and a few others to keep the original fans happy. But it will not be the juggernaut that Sony and MS will unleash. Its just not the same market anymore.

I like the Wii but I think that this go-round they only have a shot at 2nd place, at best. The videogame market has eclipsed the filmmaking industry for several years now, and the people who put it there are you guys, buying the kind of games you like. That's where most of the money is. Nintendo is gambling big time with this new machine; they want to create a new segment of the market, sort of like the iPod did. Good for them. But this is a risky strategy. Sony and Microsoft are taking the safe route, MS the safest of all.

It may not make for great headlines to the crusty gamer crowd here who appreciates Nintendo's willingness to break the mold, but for general 'consumption' I acutally tend to agree with the market analysis of FTA. For different reasons than they stated.

It's really not comparable at all. For one, the idea that the iPod is universally derided as being too expensive is laughable - if it were really that outrageously priced, why in the world would it continue to maintain >50% market share, especially when it continues to have a number of strong competitors? Consumers aren't that clueless - more likely you're overlooking something in the iPod that others are seeing and then assuming that the rest of the world is also looking at the product through your eyes.

I'm not sure what to tell you - this is subjective, but I remember reading numerous criticisms of the iPod's price, and the fact that it was entering an 'already-crowded' market. Not just here on Slashdot, where that sentiment was nearly universal (go look at the thread), but elsewhere in the mainstream tech press.

And yes, consumers are clueless. By any self-respecting nerd measure, almost utterly so. That's not meant to be elitism; its just that most consumers don't know what a rootkit is, for example. Heck, most of the people I talk to with iPods don't even know there's DRM built into the things.

Also, $600 for an iPod is flat-out wrong. According to today's edition of the Apple Store, iPod is really a line of products ranging from the $69, 512MB iPod Shuffle all the way to the $400, 60GB full-size iPod. I'm going to guess that a more accurate picture of reality is that nobody is paying $600 for an iPod (and even when the price was that high, very few people were) and the vast bulk of the sales are for the lower-end versions.

Yes, but my context was the iPod launch, not the subsequent long line of successor products. Originally it was quite expensive - I don't recall exactly if it was $600, but I know it was at least $500. And Mac-only.

Sony isn't offering a low-end version. If they were to clue in and offer a PS3 without the Blu-Ray player at a dramatically reduced price, I might be willing to think that their PS3 pricing scheme has anything at all to do with the iPod's pricing scheme. But, of course, that isn't going to happen because Sony isn't trying to sell a game system with the PS3. The plan for the PS3 is to use game-playing features to chump people into buying a Blu-Ray player.

It remains to be seen whether this would be a good idea or not. We'll see how the Xbox 360 does with that strategy later this year. Personally I think bifurcating the platform is a terrible idea; it runs counter one of the main points of a game 'console'. A better argument is to say they should have ditched Blu-ray altogether.
