  3. Why is Seamless playback so hard? on Apple Releases Major iTunes Update · · Score: 1

Can anyone explain why it's so difficult to get seamless playback? It seems you'd just have to say "ok, we got music from bytes 12312-234902384 in this track, and again starting at byte 23423 in this one, so as soon as we get close to the end of track 1, let's start decoding track 2". What's wrong with my assumption? Why do we ever get gaps (except for the recorded silence at the end of most tracks)?

Well, you could just record through the line in or optical in jacks that every MD recorder (AFAIK) has. Just plug your CD player or computer soundcard into the MD, and hit record. It works almost just like a cassette recorder. You only gain two things from the software: faster transfers, and digital transfers. Digital transfers can also be done from some CD players, and even some soundcards (I had an M-Audio Dio 2448 for this purpuse in my pre-Mac, pre-NetMD days).

You must have aversion for sound quality.

Have you ever used MD? It has great quality, and has for the last 6 years at least.

Standard (SP) MiniDisc encoding is 292kbps ATRAC. ATRAC in general is slighly more faithful than Fraunhofer MP3, so this is roughly equivalent to 320kbps (certainly better than 256kbps) MP3. That's pretty damn good sound quality, and that's what you get when you put 74 minutes of music (or 148 minutes of mono audio) on the disc.

The LP modes use a newer codec, ATRAC 3 (where was ATRAC 2??), which achieves even better compression/quality. They use 132kbps (roughly like 160 or 192kbps MP3) or 66kbps (~80 or 96 kbps MP3). So yeah, the lowest quality/highest recording time option ain't so great, but the middle quality mode is pretty damn good still.

Sure, boycott Sony, though. The Sharp machines are generally more solid & much better for live recording.

Actually, it's people's choice not to use IE for Windows that helps web standards. IE/Mac is a pretty compliant browser, & was the most compliant non-beta browser on any platform for quite some time (until Mozilla 1.0 finally appeared). Of course it's now dead & won't be improved, so it's probably time to move on.

Hmm, i simply installed "daemonic" from fink (as well as "postfix-release"), typed "sudo daemonic enable postfix", & it installed a "daemonic-postfix" item in /Library/StartupItems which starts Postfix automatically with every reboot. (Previous to daemonic's emergence, I'd rolled my own startup item, which was pretty easy as well-- I just copied the SSH one from /System/Library/StartupItems & changed a few things.) Try it out.

Not true. Even people who can't hear a pure 22kHz tone can often hear the difference when you have two samples, one with 22kHz as an overtone, the other with the 22kHz filtered out (or not generated, if it's a digitally-produced sample). & of course that's the stuff we're trying to record, natural instruments with real overtones, not pure sine waves at various frequencies.

  20. Re:Why do this? on Ripping from Vinyl, Simplified · · Score: 1
That sounds a little odd. You're saying that with appropriate signal processing, you can make the record ``sound better'' than the vibrations encoded there? Why can't you similarly massage the digitized data? What is on the vinyl which isn't on the CD?

It's not that "with appropriate signal processing" the record improves, it's that there's almost infinite room to improve the playback equipment, & thereby produce a better unprocessed signal. A cheap CD player can get a lot of the right bits in the right places, but the problem is there's information missing "between the bits."

Since vinyl has a much more "natural" representation of sound (I'm speaking physically, in that the grooves are mathematically quite similar to the air pressure fluctuations of sound), there's less of a tendency to lose information. If anything, the main complaint with vinyl (& all analog media) is what gets added, such as hiss, pops, &c.
