If you want a device that size, chances are you'll also what the physical keyboard, well otherwise your probably writing kanji.

I'm also curious why people are attracted to Android. I've found that my N900 definitely has limitations, especially no printing. Yeah, I could always install cups and ghostscript just like Linux, but I'd need to micromanage the ghostscript driver installation, well plus the apps don't offer print buttons. How does printing work on Android?

I'm also not terribly happy with x11vnc on the N900. It'd rock if my phone's screen would just pop up on my desktop, but x11vnc is unbearably slow over wifi, making only usb networking pleasent for sharing screens. I'm obviously very happy the N900 has pdflatex svn, git, and rsync, but I've only actually used rsync. Android must have an rsync implementation, but what about svn and git?

Afaik, the N900's email program also lacks gpg integration. :(

An N900 running Maemo is way more fun.. and MeeGo will be more fun in the future.

In fact, I see tremendous value in pushing the screen real-estate for phones, sure some people won't buy the bigger phone, but you might hit that optimal size for many people.

That said, you'll never break into a larger screen size using only a virtual keyboard. Anyone who'll buy the oversized phone will require the real keyboard for more computer like functionality, like writing emails.

I donno, you could install the linux printing subsystem since cups isn't very big. I guess minimizing ghostscript's bloat might require some apt/dpkg/rpm integration for drivers.

Ideally, you might configure cups for just forwarding files, letting another machine handle the print drivers, and let people install ghostscript drivers if they've got a wifi printer.

After that, adding print commands into the various Maemo applications doesn't sound all that difficult, the main ones being email, web, maps, pdf reader, and file manager.

In fact, you can already print files from Maemo by building an ssh script, but that's not especially convenient.

Android phones will run unsigned apps, right? I'd assume you could maintain your Android app outside the marketplace, which isn't the same revenue stream, but might pay for the data feed.

In any case, I actually suggested developing a business around porting existing successful iPhone apps to Qt on Symbian, which probably goes way beyond the abilities of out iPhone developer, but nevertheless represents a solid business model with many potential corporate customers.

In fact, I specifically mentioned Symbian because Nokia still kinda owns the lower tier smartphone market outside the U.S., including all Cricket playing countries. But WebOS, Blackberry, and Windows Mobile are also all perfectly viable platforms, but you just better know your target audience.

A little life advice, you know that girl you call every 2-3 days for 2 weeks, but never actually meet? Well, she's just not that into you. Apple'a App store is a pretty similar situation. You should either (a) get a job writing an app for people who have the clout, like say a newspaper, or (b) just changing fucking platforms.

Maemo and MeeGo are kinda a moving target right now, but one might try expanding GnuSTEP to aid porting iPhone apps. Or, if your really crazy, try writing tools to help port iPhone apps to Qt. I'm sure many iPhone developers would love having their apps run natively on Symbian phones.

Btw, GnuSTEP was originally developed by SLAC to help port HippoDraw away from the dying NeXT platform, but they eventually gave up on Objective C and NeXTSTEP's, instead choosing Qt.

A charge like murder has lesser variants like manslaughter when unintentional. You could argue that a charge like treason should have lesser charges called maybe "offense against freedom" for constitutional violations that were subtle or unknowing. Just like manslaughter never carries the death penalty, an officer who commits the "offense against freedom" of beating up a guy with a camera would merely serve jail time, not be killed.
