My Nokias have come with multi-touch keypads since day one. And they have had Opera as the web browser for as long as I can remember off hand. But the main problem with web browsing on a phone is not the device itself, its with the speed of the network - anything below full 3G just doesn't cut it. Websites are just too big - even ones like Slashdot or news sites like CNN or BBC - to go back to dialup speeds and have any kind of usable experience.

And even now that I have 3G I don't browse on my phone because with bluetooth I can simply use it as a modem for my laptop without even taking my phone out of my pocket.

I'm sure the iphone will be a good phone, but I just don't see that it solves any problems that needed fixing - you still have a small screen, a very limited text input system and slow speeds. Its not a mass market device and people in the niche can already get everything the iphone provides (I can run Opera, putty, multi-service IM, ebook reader, mail client, mp3 player, Word doc reader, PDF reader, SIP client, with bluetooth and WIFI, on my Nokia _and_ it came free with my contract, and the next version will come free when I upgrade).

The final selection for power generation has yet to be made; it will be a yo-yo-like device that can be pulled by hand or foot, with a strap that can attached it to a belt or table. The yo-yo generates around 10 watts, while the XO consumes a mere 3 watts in non-intensive computing. This means, for example, that that for every 10 minutes of power generation, a child should be able to surf the internet for a half hour.

Any motion sensing madness is really just a bonus - and I guess would all help in the calculation and maybe make it more accurate. Its not like you haven't been able to buy gun based games on older systems, like the Dreamcast.

Also, it wouldn't surprise me if you larger/more powerful sensor bars were on sale at some point in the future - if not from Nintendo, then from 3rd parties. I suspect the reason for its size is simply that it has to be generic and fit TVs right down to 14" portable jobbies. It seems like to good an opportunity too ignore, though - offering larger sensors for bigger screens.

Personally, if I was ever going to use my Wii to browse the Internet I'd rather pay $5 for a good browser with a long development history. Since I'm never going to use my Wii to browse the Internet I can save myself the $5, which I couldn't do if it was built in and Nintendo were paying per unit licensing.
(In reality, since its going to be free I can actually have the best of both worlds - but I'm not fooling myself that I am ever going to use my Wii to browse the net, I'm just not going to miss the chance to grab it for free).

I've also seen one fight (one guy in a chip shop getting beaten up by his Protestant friends because he went to a Rangers/Celtic game with some Catholic friends - some friends. They also legged it when the owner came out with his cleaver. And that was maybe 16 years ago). I've seen the odd disagreement, but that's the kind of thing where some friends get a bit heated and within two minutes they are all hugging and singing loudly together. I have never felt threatened.

According to the media though, everytime I go into the city centre on a Saturday night and come home alive I should be thanking the God of my choice for a lucky escape.

Blah blah blah bully bad blah blah blah also agree to a full review into banning it'. Blair responds as above".

I guess its like Jeopardy - even if you just want to lick Tony's ballsack verbally, you still have to phrase it as a question. "Would the Right Honourable Genleman agree that your ass tastes like liquid honey and you are probably the greatest thing since my wife agreed to anal".

I would like make two points though -
    1) I'm not defending Blair, just the seeming illogicality of the quote, which probably makes logical sense in context. I personally think (know) Tony Blair is a compulsive liar who would tell you you smelled of roses if you'd just taken a bath in shit.
    2) One of the reasons this will make waves in Parliament is because, in the UK at least, all members of parliament are the very people who were bullied at school. You only have to look at most of them to know, and opening their mouths just confirms it.

I'm not saying they are true, just that I could belleive them if shown evidence. I'm a new father and it is amazing to watch our child's development as he plays and discovers everything; learns to communicate and interact with his surroundings from first principles. I find it hard to believe that lack of emotional contact, especially from the mother, couldn't have a fundamental impact on a child. It lost its crown long before mp3s were even invented, when cheap oriental ripoffs could be had for a tenth of the price - after all the basic functionality is just to play cassettes, anything else is bells and whistles.

Same with an ipod, we're not talking about it being replaced by some new technology (as I read the PS) like holodisks - just the commodotising of mp3 players, for example, or subscription services, or a sciesmic shift in fashion back to the 80s style of techno-ugly, or removable card based players for a tenth of the price, etc.

There is also the point that many toolbars are installed deliberately (as I say, that is the point) so an average user will click yes at security confirmations. The question is, what is installed then.

  22. Apples and oranges on Will the iPod Ever Die? · · Score: 1
You are comparing the walkman to the ipod, which is a pretty useless comparison. The point is that the walkman dominated early portable cassette player sales. The ipod dominates current (which is early in the day) portable 'mp3' player sales (although unlike Sony, Apple didn't create the market in the first place). There is nothing in the ipod that another mp3 player cannot do, just like there was nothing in the walkman that another cassette player couldn't do.

I certainly hope the Zune won't just replace the ipod as the defacto player, but if I were Apple I would be worried that it (or some other player, or players) will remove my market dominance. I don't know what could do it (or I'd be making it) but I would say it is innevitable and Microsoft stand a good chance simply because of its OS dominance.

Maybe it will be subscription licensing - itunes is an expensive way to fill 15GB of space. If MS can make a subscription model that is as easy to use and intigrate with the Zune as itunes/ipod then it could be a big selling point (note - I don't like the subscription model, I like to own, but I learnt a long time ago I am far from the median in most markets).

Joe Sixpack might love the fact that he can pay $10 a month and have his Zune filled with trackes he loves, tracks related to tracks he loves, suggested tracks, his friends playlists, related playlists (think amazon 'similar' and 'recommended' items) but all synced and put on his player when he leaves it charging. After all, most people simply don't have a 15GB core music collection and I'll bet many would be happy to see the rest of the space used with a changing flow of music.
