    When was the last time you saw someone firmware upgrade a building? This analogy is hardly acurate. Software is correctable. I would hardly consider something like this "Dangerous" as the previous poster put it.

    And as far as Wi-Fi security is concerned I think that people have blown it way out of proportion. If people just treat Wi-Fi networks as insecure as the Internet and keep it seperated from their internal network there shouldn't be any problem with keeping it open. Secure hosts, not networks.

    I can see how this would help in stateless protocols like DNS or for use in routers, such as the IPv4 to IPv6 gateways, but how does this help in the case of a web server?

There is no expectation of privacy while driving down the street. If the article said the town was installing cameras in the TV sets of residents and hotel rooms, then I can see calling it orwellian. Otherwise, get over it.

    That's what it sounds like to me. Maybe everyone's private medical records should be "accidentally" published on the 'net and we'll see how long people scream first amendment. No, I think people here would instead be yelling about their privacy first. Doctor-patient privilege is no different than the attorney-client privilege. IMHO, the press shouldn't be allowed to print it, and the person who leaked it should be thrown in jail.

    Well, "Area" really only applies to the surface of the Earth, so more likely it would be the IPSN - Inter Planetary Spacial Network. But how usefull can this really be? I mean Instant Messaging would be impossible. It would have to be renamed to Huge Lag Messaging.

    3) Lovely handheld-style (jerky) camera moves from space. I actually liked this.

    I did not. It reminded me of 24. And it wasn't limited to space. On the bridge instead of just cutting from from actor to actor, we'll just spin the camera 180 degrees really fast. Whoa, stop the ship, I wanna get off.

    Hmmm, maybe that is because Linux is Unix. If it walks and talks like a duck I'm gonna call it a duck. gcc, GNU make, CVS, and GDB? Yup, I've got 'em all on Solaris. I guess this book should be "The GNU/UNIX development platform".

    WEP is not secure, therefore, the fact that WEP is turned off doesn't make it insecure. The best thing to do with 802.11 is to turn off WEP and use secure application protocols, like Kerberos, OpenSSH, OpenAFS, SSL Imap, etc, etc... WEP only adds useless overhead.

    And as far as the SSID goes, if you can snoop for the SSID what does it matter what the value is? Default or otherwise.

    If facts currently can't be copyrighted then does this mean that a GPL like license for data also can not exist, such as the opencontent license?

    A previous article about how maptech obtains their map data prompted a reader to propose an opensource type map data clearing house with the data being submitted by volunteers. I am working on trying to create just such a thing and I am looking for some kind of protection for the data to keep what happened to CDDB by Gracenote from happening to it.

    Now it sounds like if something is a fact, such as the location of something by lat/long, the titles of tracks on an album by some artist, or the square root of 144, it is in the public domain by default, assuming this bill doesn't go through. Am I interpretting this correctly?

    I've been on atkins for a month now and it rules. Any diet that lets me have eggs and sausage for breakfast, every day, is the diet for me. And I've lost 10 pounds so far. Halloween was kind of a bitch, but I made it through it. I had my wife dispose of the extra candy at her place of work. Let them get fat. :-)
