AS I read EULA of the fonts there are two conclusions.
1. Distributed packages must be exe files. 2. Everything else is not important.
It's truth that MS has included part where they have rights to cancel license, but only to a vendor that doesn't respect distribution demands. That means "Original packages".
About the place, sourceforge or freshmeat would be much better than some personal page.
So making a Wine installer and redistributing original packages is what it should be done. MS hasn't specified cancelation of the package, except in terms of wrong distribution. RPMs, DEBs are excluded.
Conclusion, it's time to make a nice sourceforge page, where are all packages in the correct and demanded form. Make a nice.sh installer that downloads specific web font installer (that extracts and installs trough wine) and installs them to a system.
EASY! I'm starting it already. But then again... Is there something what I'm missing or it's time to start this project? That would be appreciated.
I expressed a problem and a solution. No need for help.
Ok, thanks for trying to do something I've already done.
But, 2 points.
1. My experience with Windows go far enough. From the beggining 'till now. My work still involves working with them. Linux just can't support some jobs (but less and less:-). My work involves mainly servers, coding and making custom system services with making cusom software and supporting advertising companies. 2. My experience with Linux. Well after working on SGI and Sparc. I've left Unix. There was no valid (or cheap, take it or leave it, I was still student) platform (after I've left the job where I was working with them) until Linux became valid platform for my needs. Now I'm back on *nix and that's the real thing. Coding too:-)
Fellow man? First step on the ground and post viable comments. That's the kind of people that I call fellow man (not trollers). Although I admit that your attitude has changed.
Spitting on the ground you don't own is not allowed. If you're incapable to set up Linux (what is well readable from your post), that's not a reason to post to the world. Ok, learn your magic and when your ground is stable to make the posts constructive enough.
From which country I am?:-) I could be almost from any European country, they all use coutry specific connections to their banks. But I enjoy incognito.
work on 2000 and not XP? any driver based software. Credit Card specific software (that involves bank software). Based on a change of a driver model. Try installing older version of Corel. It may put in danger your System folder. Based on the thinking that applications provide system libraries in system folder many setups override without a question, that puts in danger whole system.
I wonder one thing, how many friends have you asked for help with linux (the ones that know what to do) before you started to think the way you do. And what version, ususaly that means 5 or 6 redhat. The orld has changed since then.
Many apologies if I have offended your sensibilities? No thanks, but apologie accepted.
Xp came bundled with the notebook? So either I stay with ice age hardware, or ice age software. Guess what, I need hardware for other things.
Bite the bullet?:-) I did, I bought VMWare installed 98 and now all the work I do is under Linux.
No, not proprietary software, there's only two different softwares that here in our coutry are used to connect to the bank. Guess what, Quicken is not supported. And yes I contacted vendor, they said I should move to Win2000.
Compatibility mode???? Hope you had better luck than me. That thing never worked. And yes, I tryed that.
Why the hell, would I need compatibility mode. Everything is either GPL or it's vendor supported. Every piece of software I bought for Linux is vendor supported.
Help me? With what? Sorry, I didn't asked you for help. Reason I answered was irritation with you arrogance in previous posts.
"Here's a clue for you, buddy: if an article goes on for two straight paragraphs about "32-bit applications" and "64-bit processors," it's got the "geeky details." In spades.
I don't want the geeky details, and I certainly don't need them to see that there was nothing that a REAL computer user would be REMOTELY interested in presented at this convention."
I guess you're one of the happy readers of "Runs better, faster" type of logos, maybe you should read some children web site, there is that kind of readings you'd wish. Hope you're not expecting that mostly linux geek site will go on your level.
Or on the other hand, it would be useful some kid, user, geek preference in your info.
"And who are these other people? Oh, right, EVERYBODY. That sounds like a standard to me"
But, doesn't it bother you that less and less people confirms to that EVERYBODY?
"Eazel sure did well.... (cough)"
WHat has Eazel to do with documents compatibility
"I can still run all my old DOS programs in Windows XP. But, hey, if I ever find one that I can't run, that's the price of progress. I'd much rather lose the occasional 20 year old program (why would I want to run software from 1982?) than be stuck with some ridiculous OS that requires me to "recompile my kernel" every hour."
????
Ok, I've bought my self notebook with XP PRO. There's only two windows apps I'm using.
One goes way back into startings of my company. All my comapny papers are inside. Guess what. It doesn't work under XP.
Second one is not so old it's a one year old program that I use to connect to the bank (Same program that half of the country uses). Guess what, Doesn't work under XP.
So, to hell with your progress. Here's why somebody would use a program like that.
"And that's exactly why unix has been left behind -- along with the rest of the 70's."

Definetly yes. It informs, very well on other topics, which are waiting for that gcc releasem not only on gcc.
"I never, ever said that. Ever." Read your comment between lines. Either you put it badly together, or the opposite:-)
"And its not true in all cases." And opposite
"Yes, if you stick to the basics, its fine" No, I'm not, as I specified before, my Office use has some needs that MS Office just doesn't support. Main problem ARE my BASE needs. OO covers them, MSO doesn't.
"you are probably out of look" (intentionally misrepresented):-) My look is good, thanks, in fact I'm just beautiful
"People are claiming that these products are the same as Office, or just as good" Take me for example, I said it's better than... I've even explained why. Let's not start some flame war, so I'll use mine, you use yours, but it would help if you'd put at least some example in your thoughts, when you're thinking at loud...
"And its not true in all cases" And then again, it is in some... (you've said that, if we look your sentence from wider angle)
To end this, I've been using MSO for 7 years, it never satisfied my needs. But then again if I look world around me, most of the people are using it with a feel of satisfaction. So it is as I said, one preffer blondes and one prefers brunettes, me for example I like redheads (there are some fetish people that like them fat). So everybody can get one for him self, and no any kind of woman is discriminated, and just as with woman, so is with the software
"Okay, well.. I think you misunderstood what I meant by "automation". I was referring to COM/OLE, which known as "automation" in the Windows programming world."
I understod you, I named only component features that could be achieved by using such objects. read like mailing lists, document sampling and recalcualting etc.
I just named a few critical features that are missing from MS Office, with mentioning the point that missing points are not commercial/OSS software features, but software based. Let's say, MS Paint is commercial, but does not achieve functionallity of most simple paint software, no matter proprietary or OSS. On the other hand, there's a lack of SSH terminal in Windows? We could o on and on.
WTF, your saying that commercial software is better than OSS is FUD. Sometimes this is truth and sometimes not, but this is not based on assumption proprietary vs. OSS, it's based on programs (every piece of software that you evaluate) features and how this software covers your needs. Otherwise we would all be using AutoCAD for editing text documents, it's commercial and expensive. As based on your assumption, better than OSS and cheaper software.
Wrong, the only way automatition is possible is with special software that does only the job you want it to do.
Or, perhaps you know how to make MS Word calculate without forgeting formula from template? Or use DB without having to code your own bloathed macro that's (1. slow like hell, 2. no average user is capable making it us), or capable of recalculating data on-fly and still having a printable form (Sorry excel is non-usable for printing just as OLE interface). In all of the mentioned forms Open Office performs much better and looking from this point of view guess what MS Office isn't automatised. Nor friendly.
Depends on users needs and users points of view of automatition. Not trolling, but my office use shows that MS Office sucks. But then again there are probably people with different points of view than me.
Take up Office costs. Use that costs to develop some applications. It will probably cost more than that if you're really demanding, but then and after then your work it will be customized and automatised.
"But if you actually do use one of the features, good luck trying to replicate it in a free software package." I had luck, much more than with MS, thanks.
Yeah, I understod that. And that's why I said it's not a head start to nicer public relations (or being fair), but head start to new projects. It's a classic "wolf in sheeps...." to hide something not so good with some nicer impressions, combined with chances to get something good out of the DoJ verdict since they've played fair.
Wrong, they are just trying gain blind public trust.
As from now, they try to push DRM and positive aspect of company info will probably help them a bit. Same as for every new Win version "works better, works faster..." people read and believe, same game they are playing with this preliminal cooperation with DoJ (there's probably some closing speach that'll show them in different new light).
"always be prepared", yeah but unfortunatelly in negative aspect. MS is a company and tryes to make money. Public interests are not really important. The more they grow, the more they'll try to take such blind steps to gain public into new restrictions that make them money.
You speak as this would be on the air operation. I worked with radio stations and I can assure you two things.
1. They always download and use every new beta. 2. You can still preview your work, it's not like it would be depending on first time production.
But still wouldn't hurt to look at wave noises and quality before usage. Personally I don't know anyone that would test software and equipment in that manner, everybody just buys and use. Neither are they checking wave picture of their results.
No, you're a bit wrong here. Software is there, but is too fragmented. (Ok, take it as this distribution has a year or so to come out, so they will probably invest in that)
Base meaning of this distribution is putting together all of that in one package that fits all. As I presume, there will be some new ongoing projects to go with that (also suggestions and co-work with musical departments institutes that are contributing to project). But still major thing it will be tweaking everything together to make a sencible one-way distribution (as Lycoris) and show coverage of that department. I don't know, but I presume that this project will include some framework application on desktop to connect all applications as user expects (my guess) and to ease productivity.
Main problem of linux audio was, there was no applications, at least until I've searched whole Internet to get a software for real time multichannel recording and software for editing wave files.
Getting distribution in that way, well it's just another LSB-audio to show others what it can be done in this department, and making place for some commercial applications that will probably follow this move. (I think that movie industry would be glad to cover that deparment also as they did CGI).
"I'm going to push in the other direction: free software on Windows for an easier transition. The freedom is the important part, you see"
Tell me you're not serious.
That's just as you've bought your self a racecar. With no roads to drive on. OR, it's freedom if you're allowed to walk in your prison cell.
It's a way better solution to show a free OS being feature equal than non-free OS that runs free software too. I don't say pushing free software on commercial OS is bad, but if I understanded you correctly and that's really your way of pushing Linux, well,.... you're wrong.
Best way it would be to show feature only, "Yes it can do that, but that's a bad decision, there are better solutions"
Yes, but windows license excludes that option. You can't connect to a remote Windows machine without owning another license of that system.
But I don't know how is with the clause that only MS poduct is allowed to connect to remote windows desktop, as I know it's already included in th license
Infact it's even better than that for some reasons.
1. Graphic cards are getting faster and faster and all games can be played in emulator with normal speed 2. You can have games separated from your system, just like a console 3. Just checked WineX game installer. It can completely separate every game to it's own drive. No bugging, just delete game folder and that's it.
All of this points cover most of the problems by playing games on windows. So that's a reason to support that
Actualy, first one you're right but as much as I love Linux advocacy, second one is wrong. If it weren't IE we would be paying for Netscape. Netscape had initial price that has gone down to 0 with version 3. IE was free.
Now it's other way around. People pay for bundling IE wth Windows and as such IE price tag is included with system price. Netscape has gone further by supporting Mozilla, so his price tag has gone below zero (not by usability, price only).
I began to be really proud to be from Europe, not just for this one, for all other coutries too.
I think that Europe could be a hard candy to swallow for DRM (at least part that had supported that is now really big). I just hope that all other coutries would join and show us all this new EU community and maybe there is a hope that "1984" won't happen' ever.
As MS helped Apple 5 years ago, it was nothing but truly egoistic move from oth sides. MS had to have back covered in antitrust judgement... Apple had no money to compete with the others.
And now after five years they meet at another crossroad, but Apple this time has finances and MS doesn't relly need Apple so bad.
Five years agreement was nothing but five years of growing tension between both companys. Apple has nothing to loose (at least as long MS is stealing desktops from him, and the only way to grow is to steal some desktops from MS), MS has nothing to loose (Apple Mac OS X is not their OS, "sheeesh it's Unix"). And here now is the battle of the giants. One polished and user friendly with a complete solution and the other, well it has majority of desktops. Now this battle is continuously growing from smaller disputes and smaller blows to higher and higher. It's just a matter of time when it will blow into the world.
Apple has already started battle with stoping Shake production and pushing Unix, and Unix is a long time non acomplished MS grail. Just when it seemed they will succed to diminish Unix, Linux and MacOSX crossed their path. This was the silent start of war. Pushing Office and IE or Mac OS X is just the last try to control what you don't own.
Prediction is: Both companys will throw away huge amounts of money just trying to slowly diminish the opponent. In here Apple has advantage in their own hardware, which is pushing their second line of proffit : Software, while MS has advantage in almost unlimited supply of money and lack of fair play (Apple's not much better though). This war will continue to grow with every atempt to crush opponent.
Points of survival and advantages for Apple: 1. Their own hardware running their own System where MS can barely compete. (MS could hardly start to push their own computers without loosing their best customers such as Dell..., hey would have to announce another kind of war to stat that, a hardware war) 2. Professional line of software for high end users 3. Open office could help them ditch MS, and it's free 4. Almost fanatic users, which realy believe in their computers, and will probably stay with Apple no matter what 5. Partialy cheating with Open source sympathy
Points of survival and advantages for MS: 1. Majority of desktops 2. Most used office suite 3. Terrifying amount of money 4. Corrupted officials
I'm not saying anybody is better, they both suck big time. In case my prediction would be correct, at least Linux will have more peace and options just because it's strangely somehow neutral (money basis at least). But it's definite that both competitors will dry out their money supply if they would start this battle.
1. DRM makes current software unusable (as it's not DRM, specification says that in case of running nutrusted software system will immidietly close all other programs, WILL THEY HAVE NO COPY, CUT and PASTE BETWEEN OLD AND NEW SOFTWARE???) 2. DRM makes compatibility with current software not possible. New version just won't open non certified data, HOW WILL SOMEBODY INTEROPERATE WITH OTHER NON-DRM PLATFORMS??? 3. DRM forces honesty to that high point, that dishonesty will not be a feature, it will be a social need (I'm not speaking for my self, but people just don't buy 3000$ PC as they used too, it's all more like moving to a cheap PC platform as Wallmart) because people couldn't afford that kind of expenses. WHERE TO GET THE MONEY TO BE IN TREND OR AT LEAST ABLE TO USE PC???
And now reffering to Longhorn (as this is first true DRM platform) 1. MS cheated people with software licensing (people signed for three years, but Longhorn commes out in five, in this time all companys that signed new licensing are available get every new version for free, WHICH VERSION??? service packs should be free, and as there is no new version, WHAT HAVE THEY PAID FOR???) 2. As filesystem is incompatible with old filesystem and DRM is incompatible with non-DRM, this leads to a massive upgrade of every piece of software people own. I just can't imagine my self some DTP publishing or CAD house upgrading their software in that manner (there is another massive problem in this design, old systems won't be DRM, and this makes team work or network connections impossible, WILL THEY BUY ALL OFFICE AGAIN???) 3. Conclusion point of that is, if any company will accept that it is stupid. IT WOULD BE EASYER TO PUT MONEY IN ENVELOPE AND SEND TO BILL
This was just a bunch of thoughts that cross my mind. As for DRM, nobody will put me on a rope and restrict my barking. I'm not a dog. There are money concerns in that plan, especially for non-US states. But that isn't the only problem, with all the money people will loose rights and dignity too. For world to function correctly there is no need for strict representation of Orwells "1984", it is a need to be free and able to be honest to the point which you can achieve. In my case, I always buy software I use, if the company does not allow demo version I use pirated one, but if that one suits my self, I buy it. Music CD, download MP3, and if it's good then and after then I buy that CD. DVD, well I don't buy DVDs no more. OSS deCSS is just as illegal as DivX, but DivX is cheaper (I've bought substencial collection of them untill that law was passed, now if I break the law I'll just take care of my money too).
AS I read EULA of the fonts there are two conclusions.

That's just as you've bought your self a racecar. With no roads to drive on. OR, it's freedom if you're allowed to walk in your prison cell.
It's a way better solution to show a free OS being feature equal than non-free OS that runs free software too. I don't say pushing free software on commercial OS is bad, but if I understanded you correctly and that's really your way of pushing Linux, well,
Best way it would be to show feature only, "Yes it can do that, but that's a bad decision, there are better solutions"
Yes, but windows license excludes that option. You can't connect to a remote Windows machine without owning another license of that system.
But I don't know how is with the clause that only MS poduct is allowed to connect to remote windows desktop, as I know it's already included in th license
Infact it's even better than that for some reasons.
1. Graphic cards are getting faster and faster and all games can be played in emulator with normal speed
2. You can have games separated from your system, just like a console
3. Just checked WineX game installer. It can completely separate every game to it's own drive. No bugging, just delete game folder and that's it.
All of this points cover most of the problems by playing games on windows. So that's a reason to support that
Damn, I actually taken out my CD and read the song. Well, you're right. Damn again.
Linux needs people to contribute. Lucky me, Linux doesn't lack contributors (Hell, even I'm one of them).
Fight fire with fire! :-)
Please no! It's such a great book to use for metaphores, but I would agree with "264374579" as new one :-) (That one won't pass by for at least a week)
Points of survival and advantages for Apple:
1. Their own hardware running their own System where MS can barely compete. (MS could hardly start to push their own computers without loosing their best customers such as Dell..., hey would have to announce another kind of war to stat that, a hardware war)
2. Professional line of software for high end users
3. Open office could help them ditch MS, and it's free
4. Almost fanatic users, which realy believe in their computers, and will probably stay with Apple no matter what
5. Partialy cheating with Open source sympathy
Points of survival and advantages for MS:
1. Majority of desktops
2. Most used office suite
3. Terrifying amount of money
4. Corrupted officials
I'm not saying anybody is better, they both suck big time. In case my prediction would be correct, at least Linux will have more peace and options just because it's strangely somehow neutral (money basis at least). But it's definite that both competitors will dry out their money supply if they would start this battle.
But even more I love GTK :-)
Lighter, faster and simpler
1. DRM makes current software unusable (as it's not DRM, specification says that in case of running nutrusted software system will immidietly close all other programs, WILL THEY HAVE NO COPY, CUT and PASTE BETWEEN OLD AND NEW SOFTWARE???)
And now reffering to Longhorn (as this is first true DRM platform)
1. MS cheated people with software licensing (people signed for three years, but Longhorn commes out in five, in this time all companys that signed new licensing are available get every new version for free, WHICH VERSION??? service packs should be free, and as there is no new version, WHAT HAVE THEY PAID FOR???)
2. As filesystem is incompatible with old filesystem and DRM is incompatible with non-DRM, this leads to a massive upgrade of every piece of software people own. I just can't imagine my self some DTP publishing or CAD house upgrading their software in that manner (there is another massive problem in this design, old systems won't be DRM, and this makes team work or network connections impossible, WILL THEY BUY ALL OFFICE AGAIN???)
