Simple example, look at what the media writes about Pence. No behavior excuse here. Actually I have heard it said that Pence is worse than Trump, the reason? They don't agree with right leaning agenda or candidates or serving politicians this is bias.

Once Trump has left office all the venom will slowly subside. Who knows his google results may come back to page 1 if you search for President 45 (exaggeration there for those who cannot detect it.)

Please name these countries. A little research and you will find that they have their own problems, mass shooting is rarer in other countries maybe but not eliminated I suspect. Also gun violence in terms of mass shooting this is just one of the problems, other forms of violence including knife etc are just as bad for the population even if they don't make the news as much. Check your Utopian countries and see if they are really the paradise you promote them to be but mass shootings are not the only criteria for evaluation.

Stricter gun control may be good, I am in favor of background checks and sanity checks as you call them and also suitable storage for guns so they don't get stolen or used by children being at least recommended if not compulsory. However this does not solve the next school shooting just possible one 10 years away. To solve the next one we need to pull the gun from their cold dead hand, or even better have them scared off by the fact that they know that they have a good chance of being shot and killed quickly.

This works as we have seen a number of shooters stopped by bystanders lately, the news about shooters has people carrying their guns and ready to use them on people who start going postal. In the shorter term this seems to be our most realistic solution.

If we did not have a partisan crazy house and senate we might be able to get some things done but the partisanship of both sides is blocking even the most straight forward stuff. The partisanship is led by the left they are about 3 to 5 times more partisan than the right but both sides need to grow up and start getting some work done. In saying that I doubt they will do anything much on gun control even if they did grow up.

I think my point was Gun control is unrealistic in a general sort of sense, I assume you have heard of the Bill of rights and the 2nd amendment?

Now you propose gun laws from some foreign country where there are no shootings? I guess you could just move there. The US is not these other places, fortunately. I am not against gun control, we already have gun control, it is called background checks. Also no fully automatic weapons. We could have more but the question is will they be effective at doing any more than taking guns away from law abiding citizens. Criminals don't mind breaking laws.

Does removing the gun from the shooters cold dead hand count as effective gun control?

Really effective gun control is fine to say but what are the laws you want to have and enforce. We have we already have laws that are not well enforced, would your effective gun control (new law) be one of those also? Remember that even if we changed the federal law most states would still have pretty liberal gun laws.

There is the dream of gun control but even if we changed the law tomorrow we would still not have solved the problem in the short term there is plenty of guns out there already in the hands of potential shooters. Posting that is a bit like posting "Antigravity is a must have to remove transportation issues." Lots of people are emotional about gun laws but few seem realistic.

  9. Re:thanks slashdot on Fewer Than Half of Young Americans Are Positive About Capitalism (cnbc.com) · · Score: -1

I think you are making an error here, the difference is obviously communism is enforced not implied by peoples actions.

Communism and socialism are about taking other peoples money (Tax) to pay for what the state 'thinks' people want. Free education etc, however for all the education you don't ever get ahead because you get taxed to equality (meaning being poor.) The thing is it does not matter as much what is popular what maters is what works best and worst. What works best is capitalism which destroys poverty but not everyone is even, as in there are the rich the super rich and the poor however the poor still have a home and all amenities. What works worst is a uncertain mix like we are moving towards where it is parts of each this is due to capitalist entities taking advantage of socialist programs to pump the money out of the tax system stealing from everyone. An example of this is where you have "free" education, paid for by tax. The price goes up due to the fact that there is no need to be competitive as the customer (the student) is not footing the bill so everyone studies for as long as allowed no need to rush as the tax system is paying and the institutions charge what they want as the student does not care if it costs 10k, 20k or 150k per year. If the US went socialist it would destroy the standard of living worldwide. If the US moves towards socialism which it is doing, it will do the same but probably will correct at some point. There are plenty of people who are happy to spend other peoples money or pocket it which is the problem that capitalism to some extent solves due to the possibility of competition. If you have ever started a small business then you will know it takes a lot of effort, much less people bother if they don't see the reward possibilities. The problem with capitalism is crony capitalism but socialism offers no measure of solution to this rather making the whole problem 100x worse. We need to get rid of crony capitalism and the only person who has put up any decent effort with effect for a long time is Trump but the system is against him of course and the system manages to turn the people against him. Even having trolls post on this site on most stories some crap about treason. Then they go through and find comments like mine and mark it troll to silence the critics of the narrative.

  10. Re:Bummer on FBI Warns of 'Unlimited' ATM Cashout Scheme (krebsonsecurity.com) · · Score: 3, Interesting

Banks are pretty serious about security with a high budget. But it is the markets/stock exchanges etc that have an unlimited budget. However at present it is not about the budget but rather about what they can do to stop them at this point. Can they patch every money machine in the world in the next day? Can they find the source cards and shut down the accounts? Can they change the system to real time so that in any country in the world they support real time balance of account to limit possible funds withdrawal?

Possibly they can look into all of these things but there are a lot of issues. The problem of security has moved, however banks are stuck. They have to work with other banks all across the world and integrate with their systems, so if you are in Shenzhen China you can use you card to get cash, this is a feature requirement. The opposite side is the security requirement. However credit card companies don't take risk they just force the bank to take the risk so the bank (the smaller entity of the two) has to manage the security risk.

If they are serious about security (which they are) how should they move forward? They want to solve the issues but they really have to have answers. I suggest that a card is not highly secure and becomes a weak point in the system, is there another option that is highly secure? Anyone have some serious options rather than just lament that banks have issues?

  12. AI has nothing to do with that. AI is really just meaning using a neural network and deep learning. Note that Neural networks on standard processors tend to be slow to execute as opposed to a standard algorithm coded. Each Nural neuron has (from memory but probably Wikipedia can tell you also) two or more multipliers from inputs (typically floating point) and a comparator and takes two numerical inputs and produces an output, the network is created where there is an array or multiple arrays of neurons. Then multiple elements are combined to produce one or more outputs. Deep learning which is part of what is really meant but AI in it's current form as I understand it is where this is trained on a set of data or inputs or even vs a simulation or v's another AI or algorithm which can also be in training where the training is the learning phase and then the algorithm may or may not continue to learn while running. Since I learnt about Nural networks a long time ago probably there are dozens of people who will correct me with the current state of the art.

The main difference from traditional algorithms would be that there is no person who really knows what is going on inside the Nural network and how the result is obtained as the network is really trained with data (needing potentially millions of data inputs with a method of tuning or feedback from the result to say that the result was good or bad or even how good and how bad.) So the key to making them is 1 optimsing the actual Neurons, optimizing turning your data into inputs, optimizing the feedback path on result evaluation to help train the nural network. Also worth noting that often a random start is used prior to applying the training data set and the end result is potentially different (better or worse) depending on the start point, hard to explain the reason for this quickly. AI will get more traction due to the simplicity of not really needing to understand how to actually solve the problem just let the thing learn it's own way through. However some understanding is required to be able to turn the problem in to inputs and to train it. This is potentially much easier than actually solving the whole problem which is why for vastly complex problems like self driving vehicles you just put an AI in there and it "learns" how to drive the car based on it's inputs.

Most people took longer to turn it off, probably just processing the request and counter request.

Why follow the first set of instructions as a volunteer. This is less about manipulation and more about making a choice of no consequence to the person or the robot.

  16. No one listens to things said anonymously. If you want to stand up for something you wont have influence without identity. The reason people want to hide their identity seems to be
    - people who are afraid (I wonder why when people come after a company like this.)
    - People who want to do things without anyone else finding out eg porn.
    - Criminals and spys.

If everyone's identity was known it would be better probably but having the option to be known should be available to anyone, this company has a great idea but do they have to try again anonymously? Doing so is kind of defeatist to their whole mission.
