  1. Well...it's a thankless job. on Free Software Leadership · · Score: 3, Insightful
Know what I'm tired of? I'm tired of developers taking criticism so damn personally and not seeing it for what it is when they really shouldn't. (not to sound harsh, but really enough of the silly "artiste" type rants). If you're getting a lot of heat and you can't take it, it's probably best to step back quietly.

I think one of the secrets of staying sane in Open Source is learning how to ignore people! Just ignore them, you're right, you have NO OBLIGATION TO THEM. You DON'T have to cater to everyone's silly little whim. Learn to use the D key when people are e-mailing you personally and not the support mailing lists and news groups like they should if they had 1/4 of a brain!

Man, if you can't ignore people you're in the wrong community. And if you're not writing the software for yourself... then what the hell are you doing?

Chris, thanks for all the hard work and all, but you'll hear no violins from me.

Not to bring up transmeta, but I would give up a lot of speed and power if I could get a device that lasted longer on the road. I wouldn't give up any storage space. The Palm's a great example, but even that only lasts 2 weeks tops on 2 AAA batteries. I'm talking like 2 months or longer.

I'd like to see this come about.

Bluetooth enabled makes lots of sense. I'm glad to see digital imaging's finally hitting it's stride (that will help me in the long run). The web client and e-mail client make no sense though. Of all the things I'll be checking my hotmail account from, my Handycam is right at the bottom of the list. They could have saved themselves some development time by not putting that in there.

Although maybe the idea is that you can e-mail pictures and movies on the fly to people.

Hmm, I have to stop thinking while I'm typing.

Ok folks, here's the deal; It's not the fancy little GUI widgets that sell Windows solutions, it's the full color two page ads in "CXO Magazine", or some other publication. It's the paid fud, it's the sales calls, it's the brand name the CxO sees when they head out to Wal-Mart. It's the last 20 years of business computing history, NOT THE GADGETS.

The people that make the decisions to go Microsoft will almost never touch the systems they implement.

Tough cookies, but that's the real deal. Don't believe me? Go to a magazine store and pick up some financial glossies...

Reasonable enough I'd say. This seems to be working elsewhere. Anyway, look what happens when commercial entities get involved in government projects (read: the Internet). For good or bad, the Internet is everywhere now. I predict the same for space commerce. Space is pretty damn useful.

Now THAT's cool. This is something, oddly enough, that I think is actually holding VR back in a lot of ways. How do we suspend disbelief if we're sitting in a chair? Our brain is telling us we should be having an adrenaline(sp?) fit because people are shooting at us, but our body's perfectly motionless, and isn't buying it...

How damn hard would it REALLY be to hook a cheap exercise bike to something like an optical mouse? I'd love to try it if I ever got the time. that doesn't matter because they're going to break it all with XP. It's going to be the final straw I think.. give it a couple of years. While other operating systems mature and converge in an at least semi-standard way around practices that make sense (a gui but with the ability to really play with the guts) Microsoft insists on going in it's own management inspired direction.

And anyway Ballmer's a flake. Developers, developers, developers, developers, developers, developers, developers? I wonder how many people left that engagement converted from MS to, well, anything else!
