you also have to take into account different campuses...greeks are different from campus to campus, i went to a school with about 70% greek, so it was definitely beneficial there. my brother got a job through a frat connection...so its not all bad
It seems to me IMHO, that AI research can be looked at in two ways really.
1. AI with self-awareness 2. AI without (such as a dog)
Depending on how exactly we look at it, we're either fairly close to replicating the intelligence of an animal, or we are very far from creating AI that would be able to think as we do. AliceBOT seems to be be more of a #2 kind of AI, since all it is doing is acting and reacting to humans. AliceBOT does not seem to do anything thinking on her own, without stimulation, which is perhaps where this research should take itself. As far as the #1 option goes, it seems that the use of language would be one of the hardest things to imitate in a real world sense. It takes human children years to learn to communication effectively, and years more to learn to correctly use language and its correct rules. I have heard of efforts do teach things like this (one in Israel or something), but my whole point is that shouldnt we focus on teaching more or less self-awareness to start everything off?
"the arguments you have against linux are half-baked concepts that you've done little or no research on."
i think you miss, the point. what kind of research does he have to do to know that he's having troubles with it? i love linux, and i've been running it for years alongside windows (b/c i'm a gamer, and face it, its just easier), but this guy has a really valid theme to his article: "it was more trouble to set up and run linux that it is to run windows on the same given hardware." why does that upset so many people? different strokes for different folks, if you *like* the added work of running linux, by all that is holy, please keep running it and just smile and enjoy your life the way you like it, dont criticize others for their wants and desires, that destroys the very premise that linux was written for.
my dad has a really good method of pissing off telemarketers that call at work...he listens, asks all sorts of questions, tries to keep them on the line as long as possible, 30-45 minutes sometimes, then promptly tells them
"ok, i think i have wasted enough of your time now, i'm not interested at all, and please take me off your call list"
it royally pisses them off since a lot of telemarketers get commission on a per call basis.
I urge Trent Lott's constituents to make your voices heard on this. Same goes for readers whose senators serve on the Senate Commerce Committee."
are you kidding me? these congressmen dont give a flying monkey spunk about their constituents, they care about the lobbyists who finance their elections, the ones that keep them in office.
>>1. Turned the force into a scientifically measurable thing. (Mitochondria^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H midi-chlorians) This destroys the mythico-religious symbolism, which was damned important in the later episodes.<<
Yes, I agree wholeheartedly, but...
>>2. Changed Obi-wan's master. In IV his master was Yoda. In I it was Qui-gon. Hmmm.<<
Yoda teaches all the younger Jedi before they are taken in as Padawan's by full-fledged Jedi...and Yoda did take a personal interest in Anakin since he saw the danger, so it is possible that Yoda was much closer to Obi-wan after Qui-Gon's death, in order to keep an eye on Anakin and to help assist Obi-wan in what he knew was dangerous to do in the first place
>>3. The movies don't even *look* related. How is Lucas going to explain the change in spacecraft design from I and II to IV-VI? The nice thing about SW was that the spacecraft were very polygon-oriented in design, not curvaceous. It looked more *real* compared to modern technology.<<
Lucas did explain this. Simply put, Ep I is of a different time period, a different way of thinking. Especially on Naboo, but otherwise, doesnt Obi-wan say in Ep IV that "it was a simpler time" when giving Luke the lightsabre? The original trilogy is a time of conflict, rebellion and unease...in times like that people tend to worship function over form (ie Millenium Falcon)...when at peace, form is desired over function.
>>4. The dialog in the fight scenes in IV-VI made the fights more "human"... it gave the fights meaning instead of just fighting for the fighting. There wasn't any of this in I.<<
In Ep IV, there were three Jedi alive that we know of, so not including Yoda, the only Jedi fight scene we see have volumes of meaning behind them: a. Vader/Kenobi, we know how much history there is there; b. Vader/Luke, damn, he's telling him he's his father, there's gonna be some banter going on in that conflict; c. Vader/Luke(Ep VI), same sort of thing as the first fight, except the Emperor is there to try to turn Luke;
...in Ep I, you had two Jedi fight who did not know each other, hence, what did they really have to say to each other?? would you really have preferred Obi-wan to scream "YOU KILLED MY MASTER!!" a la old kung-fu movies?;)
>>5. Obi-wan was humble in IV, and it seemed in the original trilogy, the example of a Jedi was a quiet, thoughtful warrior. In I, the Jedi were arrogant, and violence was the first choice, rather than using problem-solving thought process. There was not much "I don't want to fight" and a lot of "I'm going to kick your fscking ass."<<
Sure, Obi-wan was humble in Ep IV, he was old, he'd had years to study and become closer to the force, the same reason Yoda is always so chilled out. In Ep I, you tend to neglect the notion that Obi-wan was the student, he was young and brash
>>6. Jar-Jar Binks. Enough said. There lies the problems. Lucas should have let fans create the prequels. I guarantee they would have done a better job.<<
yeah, Jar Jar sucked...I felt IQ points being sucked out of my head as I watched him in Ep I. The fans couldnt have created the prequels, however, because it was George's story, he already had the idea in his head, for the most part...stretching it over 3 prequels to simply tell background is a stretch maybe...we'll see, i personally think Ep II is gonna kick ass.
>> Also, if it follows the basic trend from the first 3, The first one is more light hearted, introducing characters. The second one is dark, and deepens the plot. The third one will release the darkness, but show the light at the end of the tunnel. *shrug* <<
Actually, Lucas has said it will be a bit different, analogous, but different. If I remember correctly, before Ep I even came out, Lucas said that Ep I would be more like Return of the Jedi, Ep II would be more like A New Hope, and Ep III would be the darkest, which would hold the fall of Anakin into the Vader persona, just as Empire was the darkest of the original three. It does seem to be following that pattern, and btw, all these posters need to actually READ the article before posting...the/. article was about a comment by Lucas, not the movie itself...
is it ironic to anyone else that the same folks that are fighting the good fight by making powerful and useful peer-to-peer information technology are the same ones that fsck us by selling their souls to advertising schmoe's just to make a buck, causing them to give us exactly what we want, and exactly what we hate at the same time??
If you're trying to teach some MS-acolytes about UNIX, teach them the things to make the system run. sure, sed/gawk/cat/grep are fantastic, but what good do they do you when you're trying to figure out how to configure the ethernet device?
In other words, teach them the system, not commands...they'll forget the commands, but they will probably remember the methods by which the system is set up, which is infinitely more important.
I've been running linux for about 4-5 years, and honest-to-God, i've NEVER used sed, gawk, or grep. (Yes, i know i like to do things the hard way, so f***ing what?:) )
I think people that design web sites with IE-only enhancements are just like drug dealers that sell to kids and pregnant women, with the mentality, "as long as its easy and i'm making money, who cares."
...and the entired population of Arkansas is upset...many sigh, "Why can't our family tree branch?"...referring to the way their family trees tend to just loop back upon itself...
hell, this will probably get mod'ed "Redundant" by the chimps with mod-points anyhow.
you seem to be forgetting the fact that it was GOVERNMENT/TAXPAYER money that put those lines there in the first place, *that's* why the phone co's are forced to share their lines with other competitors, because they never owned them in the first place.
I think more than anything (or any of these other reasons people have offered), they cap the upstream speed in order to keep you from *serving*...chances are, if you're serving anything (httpd, ftpd, email, nntp, etc) you're gonna use a lot more bandwidth across the board. That'd be my guess.

no its not getting more secure every day, because it is CLOSED SOURCE SOFTWARE!...it only gets any better(or worse, depending) when M$ decides to release a service pack or a *new* $300 OS with a few updates and tweaked UI.
