    My wife is the worst about this. She'll ask me to help her with an excel problem, and say the data is on sheet1 with zip codes and sales numbers, sheet2 has zip codes and DMA market, now she wants sheet3 to to summarize the sales by DMA market. My first question is, "Why didn't you do this in Access." Her response, "I get the data in excel format weekly from the client and if I convert to Access, my co-workers won't know how to use it and I'll get stuck doing everything."

    The only feature I have heard of that makes me want to upgrade is the ability to have more than 65,536 rows in excel. Of course, if you have that many rows of data, maybe you should be converting the data into a real database format and working with the data that way.

    I know a Russian lady that speaks English very well. She has a "thick" Russian accent though. She called Symantec support one day and an Indian gentleman with a "thick" Indian accent was trying to give her support. She quickly told him that since neither of them spoke English natively and both had an accent, she requested to speak with an American or a Russian that she could understand. I laughed at this and said I never would have imagined her doing that. She said, "Why waste your time dealing with somebody you can't understand? If they get mad, they'll learn to get over it. I have."

    I was the tech manager at a network support company that went onsite to businesses on a daily basis. I was in charge of hiring new techs. Since I was in the field all day also, the president of the company, a woman, would receive the resumes and hand me the one's she thought were worth looking at. Every once in a while, she would say that she had included a resume from a woman in the stack but told me to disregard if I wanted to because the never worked out. She was a strong feminist but also believed that IT was a man's profession and women didn't have what it took to do the job. Embarrassingly I also agreed with her because I felt the same way from experience. I don't consider myself sexist, but in this case she and I both were.

    For a few albums, they even released the vinyl to the public a week or 2 before the cd was released. Hip-hop will be what keeps the vinyl record alive though. Almost all hip-hop albums are still released on vinyl. Also a biased PJ fan.

    IIRC, the 487 coprocessor chip was the same as the SX chip just reversed. So a SX was a DX with coprocessor disconnected, and the 487 was a DX with the main CPU disconnected. I remember this from one of my old NetWare study guides.

    I've used the Sprint PCS wireless pccard adapter with linux. There's plenty of info on Google about this. Works good. Seem to get anywhere from 56-128 k. Works fine with a citrix or vnc connection and checking email.

    I went to the observatory in Victoria, BC and IIRC they still used a 286 to control the large telescope. Most people in the group couldn't believe it. It's living proof that some old pc's just won't die.

    If Nokia wanted to sell the phone they would supply the vendor with a working demo at a discounted price. I worked for a computer service company and if we have customers wanting to see a particular HP printer for example, HP will sell us a demo for anywhere from 25-50% of normal cost for us to use. They will refund most of the money when we return the unit after it gets old. Thats just the price of doing business in my opinion.

    Nortek claims that they can do it. They have 3 options for recovery: unlock - $85, unlock & certify - $145, and unlock, retrieve and restore data, and certify - $295.

    I received some toshiba(I think) laptop hdd's one time and they all were locked from toshiba. I called toshiba tech support and could never get it through their heads that these were hdd passwords and not CMOS/BIOS password problem. They kept telling me to just remove the battery. Needless to say, I just returned to reseller for another brand.

    Snap servers have always been more expensive than they should be. At cdw a comparable box would cost you $857.78 for the Snap Server 1100 120GB.

    For over a year I've been using old P2's and debian to make large 1TB+ network storage for just around $1000. That's 8X more than what the Snap has for around the same price.

    OK. You answered my previous question about wht the licenses were for. Now another question, why would you buy AFP licenses if obviously the Macs can talk over SMB or NFS for free? What is the AFP advantage that makes it worth paying for? I'm sure Samba is more difficult to configure that AFP but if your running a server, you should have the ability to handle the few extra steps.

    Once again, just curious?

    What does the 10-user licenses cover? I thought if I was using it as a Windows SMB server, that since it was using Samba, it would be already unlimited users because of the GPL license. Does the 10-user count only limit AFP connections or SSH clients or what. Just curious what the user licenses are needed for?

    I am in the same situation. I've used smartcard programmers for authentication purposes with Windows 2000 networks. I would love to see DirecTV come after me. I wouldn't even hire a lawyer, because why should I waste a dime defending myself to these people. This is like the RIAA coming after me for buying a cd burner or for even having an internet connection. I mean give me a break. I think they have to prove I used the reader for programming DirecTV smartcards anyway. I think a judge would also be humored by this type of lawsuit anyway.

    I totally agree. I have customers with software support who can't connect remotely via VPN because of this. I ran into this problem twice and quickly re-ip'd to cure this issue. I have never seen anyone else use this range.
    I have seen small networks setup with the MS autoconfig addresses of 169.254.*.*. Nobody ever took the time to ip address the machines or put in a dhcp server.

    I agree with you that SoBig isn't a security hole in MS's code, but I like the "Open from here" features. You said that you should have to save to disk, mark executable, then run it. Guess what, if that's how it was then people would do that and still get the worm/virus. For some reason, end-users have to look at everything that comes through their inbox. How many people do you know that run linux as root because it's easier, and even though they know they shouldn't. Seriously, I know some very smart people, and they are guilty of it and say, "You just gotta be a little more careful."

    That's they whole prevention of this kind of thing, have updated antivirus defs, know what your opening (NOT what the email says either), and just because it came from your mom doesn't mean:
    a. she's not immune from worms
    b. it actually came from her

    But amazingly, you tell an EU this and they just keep doing it and acting such the victim when they actually get infected. I actually had an EU call me over to ask me about an e-mail that actually had SoBig on Thursday. I told her not to open it because it was a virus, well she looks at me and says, "Oh don't worry, it doesn't do anything watch." And believe it or not, she sat their and opened the email and double-clicked the attachment to show me it didn't do anything. Just amazing.

    Did anyone ever buy a Microsoft Cordless Phone? I did (with much shame). Everything worked great, the pc answering machine and all, but the receiver was horrible. Couldn't hear a thing even at the highest volume. Swapped it out twice before coming to the conclusion that the receiver just wasn't going to be loud enough to be usable.
    Once again, another $100 down the drain. Thanks Bill. BTW, whatever happened to UltimateTV. It was supposed to put TiVo out of business but seemed to only be available for about 6 months.

    Sadly, GPO's are the most retarded idea MS ever developed.
    I hate to disagree, but I think windows installer is the dumbest. Why does Office 2000 need updating everytime I go to 'Find Files'. But back to the topic, export the registry settings from HKEY_CURRENT_USER and add it to login script running 'regedit /s myfile.reg'. You could also add the setting to the HKEY_USERS\.Default key but that only works for new profiles, not existing.
