The Democrats got their asses handed to them.

After the first term of this President, what does it honestly take to not get re-elected?

The Democratic party must be doing something terribly wrong to not only lose what should have been a gimme in the Presidential race, but to also lose seats in both the Senate *AND* House.

Democrats need to get their act together big time. They better hope they can come up with a better canidate for 2008.

I was listening to the NPR spot last night.

The Dodgeball server is set to forget where you are a few hours later. The inventors acknowledge that trust over knowing people's locations is a barrier that some may not trust, but the best they can do is "take our word for it."

Another part of this service they mentioned is that it has a "six degrees" type feature that will send your data to friends of friends that you may not know (if you want to).

  10. I've Tried PostgreSQL on Why MySQL Grew So Fast · · Score: 5, Interesting

I understand it's supposed to be better because it supports more ACID compliant features (and has for a long enough time to consider them stable). I just can't seem to get the hang of PG though. I far prefer the mysql command utility (and mysqladmin) over psql, I just find it easier to use. I also don't like the way PG handles users. I find it easier to add and modify users in MySQL and set their privileges with it's table method than PG which is more configuration based. I could figure everything out, but I've been too swamped lately to learn the in's and out's of PG. That's why I continue to use MySQL, because it fits my needs. Not PG's fault, but it's one of several reasons people still use MySQL.

  11. Why Would IBM Settle? on Forbes Ventures Bold Predictions For IT, Linux · · Score: 2, Interesting

IBM employs legions of full-time attornies. SCO has to hire so many that (allegedly) it's the reason why they lost money last quarter.

IBM doesn't stand to save much money by settling, if any. And by not settling, they have the benefit of crushing this lingering nonsense about SCO in the minds of many PHB's who would be hesitant to buy IBM's Linux products, no matter how unjustified.

I have to wonder who the heck this Lyons guy is. He acts like he has his fingers right on the pulse of the Unix/Linux/OSS community, when his opinions couldn't be further from what many in that community feel. Reeks of ulterior motives. Too bad Joe Forbes Reader doesn't know any better.

  12. Huge Goal To Come Through On on 20th Anniversary of RMS's Original GNU Post · · Score: 1
Starting this Thanksgiving I am going to write a complete Unix-compatible software system called GNU (for Gnu's Not Unix), and give it away free to everyone who can use it.
I've read this quote on Google Groups before and it always make me chuckle and shake my head.

How many of us here said we're going to do some large computer project and just give up on it after a day or two? For example, I always said, "I'm going to make the best BBS ever," then in two days I just erased it and forgot about it.

He says it so non-chalantly too, "this Thanksgiving weekend"... If I would have read this at the time and saw that a single man wanted to recreate an entire Unix compatible toolchain, I would have thought "yeah right."

Big props to RMS. While you may never win your struggle to get GNU's name always included in the same breath as Linux, trust me, any real OSS advocate truly appreciates your great contribution.

OS X has proven to be a very stable OS and it gives you the UNIX underbelly to teach students how to program with free compilers, while at the same time maintaining an extreme ease of use for all computer skill levels.

Apple and OpenOffice would fill the void nicely in my opinion. It won't be as cheap as x86 by any means, but it could be easier to support and teach.

btw, this isn't a flame. I'm using Linux right now and I love it, but distributing it to total novices can be frustrating.

They're implementing a policy that I don't see a clear way to enforce. Shut off IIS and how are they going to remotely identify which version of Windows you're running? A queso or nmap scan maybe? Are those accurate enough in determining which Windows is which? Are the Windows police going to come around dorm by dorm and make sure you're running XP? They're telling me I have the choice between running the utterly unstable and insecure 9x or running the utterly insecure and spyware riddled/expensive XP. I run Linux personally almost all the time, but if I need Windows for something I run 2000 Pro. And if I saw someone trying to pull this on a network I was using, I'd likely just ignore it. Worst that can happen is they catch you and you just say "Sorry, didn't see that announcement." Moral: Run what you want, but be a responsible netizen and patch your stuff/use a good password.

If the precrime for TC has been seen, and it's public knowledge he's on the run, how in the hell is he still able to access the building with his retinal scans? Shouldn't his access had been revoked 15 minutes after the chase started?

I know that people's accounts don't get deleted all the time in real life, but this is murder. I think if someone was convicted of murder at my place of business and started running from the police at his cubicle, I would have his account suspended or terminated immediately.

But, in the end, it had some holes. It's not perfect, but what is? Sometimes a movie is just a movie, it doesn't have to be perfect. Very few if any are.

Remember FF2ENG? Going to the moon at the end? Am I the only one that took *forever* to find the exit from the underground? Was there someone in the underground that told you how to get out? If so, I never found them and wound up flying around for at least a solid week trying to find the exit until I found that dark crater like thing in the northeast and tried landing on it. Damn near threw my controller out the window when I did.

Memories like that though make FF one of my favorite game series of all time.
