  2. Re:Random today, but still random tomorrow? on New Method for Random Number Generation Developed · · Score: 2, Informative

Question: why not simply use the random crap we all have on our PCs to generate random numbers? Say...choose 5 folders at random on a PC. You could use size limits to narrow the search..say between 500Mb and 2Gb. Then make a hash based on those five folders, something like file sizes or time stamps or a combination of the two, wouldn't that be pretty damned random?

Now maybe I'm understanding it wrong, certainly not a crypto expert by any stretch, but surely nobody has the exact combination of downloads+pictures+music+temp+docs that I do, and that data should be able to be mixed in plenty of ways to generate random numbers, yes? And by choosing random folders based on size instead of just choosing defaults you shouldn't run into the "everyone has the same" problem like the default contents of my music or my pictures, so am I missing something?

What you're describing sounds more like something that could be the "seed" for the random number generator - which would then still use an algorithm to generate the "random" numbers (since they're using an algorithm, they'd still just be pseudo-random).

And that's why they don't want to sell you it - because it's very likely to be an excellent deal for you and a very poor one for them.

Part of what was implied with that assignment recognizing that the teacher probably hates their job, has no intentions of actually teaching you, and (like most) just wants to do the minimum to get by (which is reading papers that are exactly 3 pages long, as 3 has probably been mandated by the department for whatever reason). I'm assuming that because she gave you a B, you never wrote over the requirement again (and as you said, you stopped doing work - meaning she had to do even less work, win in her book). This is how people (in general) work - they take the requirements and do whatever they can to just get by.

Allowing an airline to charge someone extra because the airline has arranged their seats so that 15% of the population cannot not fit into a seat is something that is the airline's problem, not the passengers.

How is this different from clothing manufacturers making it so 15% of the population can't fit into a medium or a large (thus forcing the larger customer to buy an X(XX)L for an increased price)? Is it okay to charge more for more fabric required but not okay to charge more for more seat space required?

Is it a restaurants fault if their meal does not entirely fill 15% of the population and they are "forced" to buy dessert?

Your argument seems very strange to me - companies should offer something that pleases every single person, regardless of what is profitable or economical. Unless you're intending for the 85% of the population who is satisfied to be subsidizing the other 15%.

The thing is...for how much they go after the child pornography viewers...is it really that much of a problem?

It is much more rare that I see stories about the actual pornographers being caught and while the viewers are certainly depraved (and you can argue that by consuming the child porn, they encourage those who make it), aren't the pornographers the ones we would rather catch? It wouldn't surprise me if the amount of children actually being forced into child porn is VERY small since the already existing library of images probably contains enough to keep the perverts trading for a long time.

If that is true...then this definitely is an excuse to encroach on peoples rights and use the old "think of the children" excuse because if this much effort was really being put in to catching so few potential criminals...it would be a huge waste compared to what those officers could be doing elsewhere.

Agreed that the producers are much more of a problem. To that end, wouldn't a much better law be that all digital cameras have embedded 3g that transmits all taken images to the FBI directly?
