I downloaded the latest version of my Stupid Manager (tm) so I could manage the amount of stupid that gets thrown my way daily and it still doesn't help. Can this software be clustered? Prefereably on a Beowulf?;P

You are correct sir. However, most 'Muricuhns think that Iraq and Saddam Hussein were directly responsible for 9/11. Most 'Muricuhns think the word nuclear is pronounced "nuke-yuh-luhr" instead of the correct pronunciation "new-clear". Most 'Muricuhns think that all they have to do is work really hard and they will eventually become millionaires. Most 'Muricuhns think it's OK to make huge profits even if they are negatively impacting someone else (ie. "I got mine. Now you go get yours" syndrome.). In other words at least 51% of the voting population is either STUPID or just a bunch of worthless self serving bastards who need to be blown away. So it's no surprise that these stupid people have been convinced by the popular usage of the word "communist" that it IS "totalitarian". Getting back to what we're all here about, this is like saying that every open source or free software project out there is "Linux". Heh... and there's a LOT of stupid people the world over who actually think that too. Fucking morons.
I'd give them a shot in the U.S. considering just how corrupt the current administration is. President Cheney and his wacky sidekick Dubya are treasonous bastards who deserve to be rotting in a "pound me in the ass" prison. Anyone care to send off my sentiments directly to the Whitehouse? Go right ahead. This American is standing up for REAL Americans who believe that Bush and company are all criminals. Directed at the people who voted for Bush: Remember there are 49% of us and 51% of you. While that might be a "landslide" in your minds, it just points out that there's really only 2% of that voting body who need to get fed up with the direction the conservatives are dragging this country. And as the KLF say, "It's Grim Up North". (A Northerner who doesn't hold a grudge against all Southerners, only the ones who voted for Bush)
What anger issues? I'm just having fun putting a smoking stick in a wasps nest. You know... "smoke 'em out". Heheheh. People like you have no sense of humor.
I still have my beaten up VHS copy that I bought when the movie was first released on video in 1982. It cost me $52 back then which was a lot of allowance money for a 12 year old. I was not happy with the Director's Cut and I also wasn't happy that the DVD version was so poorly done. I figured they'd hold out until the 25th anniversary to do something really nice with a box set. No matter how much it costs, I'll be buying it. This is THE movie that defined cyberpunk for me. The only thing that has me worried is the "limited release" sugegstion. That means that probably like the Critereon Laser Disc, this will be hard to find shortly was well.:(
So much for conservatives being opposed to "big government". I'll bet half the people who would support this are right-wing loonies who only oppose big government when it helps someone else but are the first to prop up regulation when it helps them. Assholes.
Of course... you're using Linux which implies a certain level of expertise that the type of Windows user I'm speaking of usually doesn't have. I'll bet if YOU were running Windows on that laptop you wouldn't be having problems either. I'm strictly a Linux guy myself, but I've never once had problems with Windows operating properly other than the fact that I can't stand the environment and the crappy software offerings.
...that mainstream "tech news" is usually done by morons. Lesson #1 that a REAL tech learns is that you never, NEVER, N E V E R install the "latest and greatest" or beta software on the latest hardware and expect it to work. Only an idiot would do that. Of course I've met a LOT of idiots who profess to being "Windows experts". No I'm not slamming all Windows users. I'm slamming the variety of Windows user who only wants the latest toys regardless of if he or she actually needs them. Living on the bleeding edge and expecting no problems is the true sign of idiocy. If you want bleeding edge, then expect to have problems. That's the way a REAL tech does it.
I cut sugar almost 100% out of my diet three years ago and my life has been better overall. But I'm not going to proselytyze about that... My response to your question is that if you really want some good tasting drinks and don't want the sugar (or the detrimental health effects of synthetic artifical sweeteners) then you must forego convenience. What I found is that if I take a natural fruit juice, add some naturally sweet "supplement" (White Stevia Herbal Extract) and us a rough mixture of 1 part altered juice + 2 parts plain seltzer, you get get a much better soft drink. A few tips:
1. Find a good, naturally sweet black cherry juice with no additional ingredients. Use a few drops of almond extract and enough Stevia to make the base mixture almost too sweet. Add the seltzer and you'll have a black cherry soda that rivals even Stewart's. 2. If you can, use freshly squeezed orange juice, strain the pulp and add a 1/4 tsp. of vanilla extract + enough Stevia again to make it almost too sweet. Add the seltzer and you have a very pleasant orange soda. 3. Lime Juice from one lime + enough water to make the difference for 1 part of 3 + 1/4 tsp vanilla extract. Add seltzer and you have "Key Lime" soda. Extra points for using real Key Limes.
Also, if you can find a "fizz saver" you can bottle your concoction for portability. Just remember to have some ice around to complete the experience.
Just a few weeks ago I posted a JE asking people what is so special about the spatial file management metaphor. Not so much because I'm bitching about it, but because I was genuinely curious about how my Slashdot friends feel. I got some good responses as well as some really good conversation going about Nautilus and GNOME. I'd been on a KDE journey (I prefer GNOME and no I don't want a flame fest both environment have their good and bad points) since November to really kick the tires and just switched back to GNOME. I decided to take the suggestions from my friends and post them in another more cohesive JE in the hopes that it would be helpful. I have to say with my new found knowledge about Nautilus plus what the article posted on the front page today reveals, I'm really enjoying Nautilus a lot these days.
You did well. The only thing is that people like me actually relish the thought of messing with the registry (if we're forced to work on Windows) or/etc config files on *nix boxes. It's amazing how many glamourous things can be achieved with the correct knowledge of obscure registry settings or config files in/etc. My wording was probably a little poor though since your point about people who've never messed with Windows is true. But I also argue that the bext *nix admins can fix any Windows problem since Windows gets more and more like Unix every day. Even though I don't use Windows unless I'm forced to, I can figure out any problem with Windows without having to do a reinstall.
Wal-Mart, the champions of the "if you can sell it and make lots of money" brand of rotted capitalism we have here in America didn't care to trademark the smiley face UNTIL someone who potentially is the creator of the icon decides to try to get it trademarked? Wouldn't that make Wal-Mart hypocritical? As soon as someone is gearing up to be in a position where he could make a lot of money off of Wal-Mart and various IM software companies (not to mention Microsoft Bob), it's all of the sudden their icon to trademark? Sorry you fucking idiots. But the smiley face has been around since before I was born and Wal-Mart is younger than I am. Someone throw a brick in the face of the CEO please?
Within reason of course. In the end there is no point to selfish motivation since it doesn't contribute to the world as a whole. Altruistic motives are far higher on the moral scale (contrary to what those philistines the Objectivists and libretarians believe). The problem is that those motives are discouraged in an active attempt to thwart the improvement of the human condition. Misery is profitable. Happiness, fairness and health are not.
OK... what's the correct procedure to clean up the registry when an errant program makes a mess of it? Especially after you attempt to uninstall. Or... what options are there to make Windows more flexible in a heterogenous environment without using SFU? Or... What is the single most important change you can make to your Windows installation to prevent or reduce the occurrence of spyware on your system (hint: it's not spyware removal tools)? Bonus points if you can do any or all of the above free of charge. Unless someone has the right answers to those questions I don't think they can say they know much about computers. I'm not attacking you BTW. I'm bringing up the questions to point out that there's always more to learn and that there isn't much point in getting into computers unless you're always learning something. With that said, Linux and the BSDs are much better learning tools for PCs than Windows. You learn a lot more about how the system works. And that knowledge is priceless.
Hear hear!! (or however that's spelled) Why on earth anyone would want videos from a convention, let alone HD videos is beyond me. It's one thing if you're a shut-in and CAN'T get out. It's another if your a pasty little gamer geek who is afraid of real people and won't get out. If that's the case then low fi is all you're worth. And if the company wants to rip you off by making you pay for content that is pointless (like magazines) then that's your own damn fault folks. HD itself is cool if you've got a monitor, but that last thing to be watching on it is conventions. It's far better to watch IMAX transfers or films with great cinematography like Baraka. I've got a 1080p LCD montior and I just watched some HD content over the weekend for the first time. It's subtly better than 720p or standard DVDs. But when you're watching crap recordings from a convention, you may as well be watching a VHS of local access cable on a 480i (standard old NTSC).
...like anyone actually cares. I'm waiting for the Infinium Labs Phantom. They've got the better deal from what I hear. And an awesome KB/mousing device as well. Once Infinium comes out with their Phantom all other gaming systems will be like the NES16.
Nice. However very flawed. Making more money doesn't mean that someone is a success at life. Take, for example, Britney Spears. I'll bet she's making more money than you are, but I'll bet you wouldn't consider her a success at life. And if you do think she's a success at life then you have failed at getting life in general. Life isn't about money. It's about knowledge. Knowledge frees you to do whatever you want. And if you're a success at life, that means you'll do something that benefits everyone and not just yourself. Once again, if you don't get that, you have failed.
They could have named them "Justin", "Britney" and "Christina".:) Oh yeah, that's right I forgot you're not supposed to have a sense of humor on Slashdot. Sorry folks.
What consumers expect from a computer is what they expect from a TV set: You buy it, you plug it in, and it works perfectly for the next 10 years. As IT professionals, we need to take up this challenge and make computers as reliable and secure as TV sets.
This comment had me rolling on the floor laughing for hours. The days when you could buy a TV set, plug it in and it works perfectly for 10 years are long gone. And it's only going to get worse. EVERYTHING is being driven by the user these days which is why so many devices are disposable. Who keeps a cell phone for ten years? Could you even expect a ten year old cell phone to have a network to connect to? And now with the advent of HDTV BEHIND us (as in the 90s) we had HD sets that WON'T be compatible with future streams. So all those people who bought HD sets in the late 90s won't be able to use them ten years later. Not to mention that it's very likely that people buying HD sets today won't be able to use them ten years from now because the standards and industry requirements are shifting. How many of you out there bought HD sets that won't meet Windows Vista's security requirments and will have to settle for lower quality or NO output from "premium content" like HD-DVDs?
Much like the consumer electronics industry, the software/OS industry is user driven. Possibly moreso. As long as the users are being made to *think* they need the latest features, security and reliability will ALWAYS take a backseat to performance. A lot of the "lastest features" rely on performance to pull off their magic. The day may come when there is enough horsepower to provide what people expect out of an OS with a Microkernel, but it's not here now and I really don't think it will be for quite some time.
Looks like a better alternative to MySpace. At least it might filter out some of the stupid. ;P
