"Because it takes anywhere from a week to a couple months to get a shuttle ready for flight."

THAT's the problem with the shuttles. When they were designed back in the 70's, they were supposed to have a turnaround from landing to liftoff of maybe a few weeks using a team of perhaps a dozen or so people. This didn't turn out to be feasible when implemented. The thermal insulation tiles themselves take weeks and a team of dozens to replace just by themselves, then you add prepping the payloads, inspections of every system onboard, etc.

The shuttle fleet were supposed to be nothing more than transport vehicles from ground to an orbiting research station. At the time, it was Skylab, and the shuttle was to have been in operation before Skylab's orbit decayed and crashed down. However creating the world's first reusable space vehicle took much longer than they thought, and Skylab crashed into Austrailia before the shuttle could correct it's orbit. It took many years for NASA to put up another space station, and it took other countries (albeit not proportionally) to help. In that time, they had to use the shuttle AS the research station.

Now, they have their orbiting platform again, and I think it is well time to start phasing in a new type of vehicle (before Freedom crashes down like Skylab). If there is one thing about the USA, it is that when a technological challenge is presented, we don't back down from it (Just look at how long we've been extending Moore's Law...). Right now we need to better our space program (I don't want to still have to be here once we f*ck up this planet, or some interstellar chunk decides it wants to hit us).

Without the rendering engine it is just a window that displays bytecode. I think the part they released is the most important part. The interface, which is all that's really left in a browser after you remove the rendering engine, is pretty much an afterthought, and is pretty standard from browser to browser (save a few gimmcky knick-knacks like a google search bar in the buttonbar... which can save you maybe 3 clicks over any other browser). The back, forward, stop, reload, etc. buttons are fairly standard.

Unless this changes sometime in the near future, I don't see why they would turn against OSS, there would be no profit in it. It sure wouldn't help them sell hardware, in reality it would hurt them as they would most likely scorn a whole new following of Apple fans (not addicts... yet).

Yes, the initial price is high, but if the equipment is as good as you claim it to be, and based on the price, i'd sure hope it owuld be able to go for at least a couple of years before obsolescence. So, all these fantastic figures are nice, but until you include how many albums/songs/etc you get per setup, it's all pretty meaningless, unless of course you have THE bitchiest clients in the world that require you to purchase their own hardware each time. And i'd sure hope that any band worth their sweat weight would at least have their own instruments and drummer.

I was in Best Buy, or The Good Guys the other day, and happened to see a display of stereo equipment. The manufacturer was pitching the product line as using Firewire to interconnect all the devices. Personally I think this is a great design. Suddenly each device has a power cord, and a single data cable. And then the reciever has a "hub" built in. FAR less spaghetti behind the system, FAR less opportunities for noise to leak into the wiring, etc.

The manufacturer is mitsubishi, they call it Net Command and they have all their pro. equipment firewire enabled. When you connect any device, it appears in a device manager-like screen where you can choose to send video and/or sound to any connected device that can output video and/or sound. Very cool, and WAAAAY better than RCA, coax, S-Video, or Component.
