I disagree. Even the mistakes and ugly are part of our culture and should be preserved for future generations. Especially if all it takes is a 50 dollar hard drive.
To let the vendors that own the tech support it. I don't see a problem with that myself. Who is to do something better but the people who write it in the first place?
You don't see Microsoft writing their own java for similar reasons, they have their own issues to deal with.
Now, if Apple stands in the way of support by the 3rd parties, then we have something to talk about.
Shhhh its more fun to bash Apple with 1/2 truths then reality.
However, as a Apple fan from the beginning, i do hope they don't take the next step. The locked down AppStore for the iphone has been a rather successful business model for them, so it isn't all that far fetched to say they aren't at least considering it for the 'computer' side of the business too.
Get it to the supreme court, and get them to hear it.. Remember they are not required to hear anything, they get to pick and choose what controversy they want to deal with.
Or collusion?
That is our future food.. everything else just wont cut it.
Just like TV has been for decades.

When you can just buy a bluetooth to serial for 50 bucks.. Even at walmart
Soon. And of cousre forced upgrades.
Where the hell do you work, and do they need help? Where i work you are lucky if the arms don't fall off on a regular basis.
That wont stop them from trying to get settlements by trying to scare people.
So when will they be selling access points in my area?
the only reason a person would be 'for' something like that is complete lack of understanding. Unless they support a fascist state of course.
You mean everyone doesn't always drive down hill, with a 200 mph hurricane wind at their backs?
Oh, and that sail? Well, we call that 'bling'. What do you mean you don't have one too?

Depends on how you define good. They are doing it for the good of their stock holders. They are running a for-profit business remember.
Sux for us of course, but OSS was around before Oracle and will be around after. Consider this as a road bump, not a block.
Real men did it with checkerboards. In the 80's i had an ST, so i was not trapped in 8-bit color land. But the overnight thing, i totally agree.
That's NOT low end. Funny how marketing is so skilled in manipulating peoples perceptions.
Why? its working out quite well for the pseudo-monopolies.
Will be its eventual undoing.
Say what you will about Apple's control over their mobile platforms, but control keeps things predicable for both developers and end users.

Google is rapidly getting to the flash point where they will cross over to 'evil conglomerate', if they haven't already.
When do we finally get to that point so we can stagnate and watch China surpass us?
Perhaps then we will get a clue.. ( but i wont bet on it )
In a way you proved my point, joe sixpack doesnt have a clue, or equates free=no good=virus=etc.
Hard core techies are not the market, just a tiny part.
