"Bullshit. I'm certainly no fan of Microsoft - I won't touch their products whenever I can avoid it - but I think its ridiculous when people talk about their right to choose an operating system (or office suite) like it's protected by the first amendment."
Its about me deciding how my child will be educated. I have a *right* to intervene on my childs education if i disagree with a particular book they are being forced to read, or are going to be taught from. A movie, or yes, even software decisions that i have moral issues with..
While i do agree choosing an OS isnt covered by the first amendment, i also never said it was. This is about the nonsence the "state" feeds my child, which i DO get to influence and have direct input over as a parent and taxpayer/voter. ( and i get complain when its wrong, like in this case )
Complain to the school board they are pushing a single vendor and not teaching. Contact your state representatives as well.
If they refuse to do anything, vote them out, and run yourself. And refuse to play this game in the first place.
Unless the class is "how to use office 2007" and an elective, they have NO right to dictate this, remember they work for you, not the other way around.. ( even if you can get educational versions for 25 bucks )
If you identify youself as an employee, then you really arent on your own time at that point. Telling/selling secrets doesnt ecen come into the 'my time / your time' debate.
I dont agree with the statement 'if you are on salary you are always on the clock'. If you are at home watching tv you are on your own time. They dont own you 24/7. If you go back into the office at 2am to fix a problem, or start doing some work at home, sure you are 'back on the clock', but sitting at dinner? Nope, there are limits.
Yes, the 4th applies until you are ordered to by a judge. ( you cant just turn down a search warrant when the cop is at the door waving it at you ). Once the judge hands down the order you dont have a choice, unless perhaps you try to plead the 5th, and i still bet that wont apply if you refuse to hand over 'documents' that were authorized to be seized by the warrant..
A company that restricts your off-hours activities is way out of bounds. Yes, i know it happens all the time, but that doesn't make it right by any stretch of the imagination.
Now if they are talking on-hours, then thats a bit different as you are on their dime. I cant get to the story to see which we are talking about.
"Are we no longer allowed to have any secrets, even on our own systems?"
Why do you even have to ask? As private citizens we arent allowed to hide anything from the government. Its labeled as obstruction of justice and we get tossed in the can if we dont cough up the keys. Even if we have nothing to hide.
So will we have to pay an extra fee to use it on *gasp* more then one of our computers? What if we burn up a charger, or want a 2nd at the office? More licensing fees?
Almost makes me want to chuck both my mac and ipod(s) out the window.
Bad idea, bad idea. Almost as bad as dropping the newton, or moving to Intel CPU's.
Neither. You just get to pay more for the 'consumer grade' items.
This is SOP really, buy the lesser competition, ride on its name for a bit then phase it out for your own product name. No one should be surprised here.
If so, you can pretty much forget about it making a difference.
While i respect him greatly for his technical abilities, as a marketing guy he sucks wind. His political views get in the way every time. ( and his abrasive personality does not help much either )
The value of the software sitting on a shelf is nil. Its all about 'potential lost sales'. Remember no bits were harmed in the original copyand since at best you can only purchase a right to use, a copy has no actual value.
More laws purchased to punish and restrict our rights. Why not just hand out cuffs at birth and label us all as criminals at the start?
Its long past time to toss all of them out on their ass and revamp the system like it was intended to be by our founders. ( yes i know it wont happen until the 2nd revolution, but i can still wish )
1 - New pcs come with vista, more pcs are sold then mac. 2 - molp holders need to start upgrading per their agreement. ( and even if they havent yet, when they renew its considerd a 'vista sale' on microsofts books )
Once the grow up they will realize that not everything needs to be instantaneous short bursts of emoticons, and you really do want to send people actual coherent thoughts ( ie, "letters" ) at times.
Regardless of the ability of me to watch my kids 24/7, its still not the responsibility of some coporation or government to teach/enforce morality.
Personally, I wouldnt let my kid have the olpc, if i wasnt in control of it.
It also just so happens my kid does know right from wrong ( at least my view of right and wrong, YMMV ), as i instilled it in him from birth, but that is beside the point that its still my job and my responsibility, not anyone else's. Even if it comes with a shiny free PC attached..

It teaches your kids to think for themselves and take action when they are being screwed.

DRM is only optional in the beginning, to get you to switch.

This sounds rather high for currently active machines with windows currently installed.
If they want to include all installs since 1.0, then i might believe their number. ( still sounds high, but at least reasonable )

I wasnt able to read the article, but that sounds like its a workable plan, and yes i agree its good news.
It would be a shame to see OBSD die out.

Without that it wouldn't ever be considered for the corporate world. Its just a 'home toy' without it.
I do agree that with the populace today being mostly media driven sheep there isnt a great chance, but there is always hope, however slim.

Well, this is pretty easy to understand.
1 - New pcs come with vista, more pcs are sold then mac.
2 - molp holders need to start upgrading per their agreement. ( and even if they havent yet, when they renew its considerd a 'vista sale' on microsofts books )
Sure, they may be out to get us, but this is just plain garbage.

The internet is the modern vehicle for exploitation by both governments ( control of information ) and corporates.
Exploit hunger? it happens every day. Remember the UN's 'food for weapons' programs? Thats a good example of international exploitation.
Doesnt he mean 'ripe for commercial exploitation'?

No, I'm one of the parents that feel its MY job to supervise what my child sees, not some corporate goon from another country.
Its my right to teach my child what i feel is right and wrong, not his.
True, it saves the state money if its a public school, but the matching funds go down for every student lost, and hurts the school, which is the goal.
