No, not saying to open it, but if they make it free it might increase their overall desktop market share. Even if its free, more desktops with their software on it can only help them in the long run.
There will also be a percentage of people that will 'upgrade' to office when they need extra features/support.
Thanks for the summary, as i know I will never read something with that much crap attached.
Licensing killed Betamax

Or rather the lack of.
If sony had been a bit more receptive to licensing to 3rd parties like JVC did, BetaMax would have survied as it was the better technology at the time.
We went thru this same process in the past, and will again. Try installing Office 2007 on win98, or buying a new piece of hardware with drivers for 98. ( or even NT4, since this is a discussion about businesses, not home users ).
Large business cant wait forever for main 3 reasons:
1 - MOLP will require it after a grace period 2 - soon, you wont be able to buy a pc with XP. And then later you wont be able to get one with XP support ( drivers )
2a - supporting mixed environments suck, so they will end up upgrading the rest. 3 - new software will eventually require vista.
You say its vanished? Then why are auto parts stores one of the fastest growing industries and they are putting stores on nearly every street corner?
Agreed, actual shops that do the repair for you are dwindling, but are being replaced by DIY parts stores.
Personally i think its partly the economy: People have less cash so are forced do more things themselves more instead of taking it to a repair center, but that's just a guess.
Well, 'intent to commit a crime' and then acting on that intent regardless of its success is already illegal ( i do believe its called conspiracy to commit ) so there is nothing really new here. Not that i agree with passing yet another law that says the same thing as another, just commenting that its nothing new.
I also don't think anyone said that you lost the right defend yourself in a court of law of you are accused of said crime, so your 'what happened' statement doesn't make much sense ( at least in this case ).
I also carry a crossover cable for the same reason. Used to carry a PCanywere cable to use with Ghost, but now that drives are so big, thats no longer a good option.
However, 99.9% of what i do is for businesses, so i can just tap into the hub/switch in the back room. And i have an external HD to store images/backups/tools/etc ( so i can borrow a pc at their office if available ) but the laptop I have is still a bit big to lug around.
Really, why would different manufacturers want to make things more interoperable? This would in the long run reduce the need to buy particular brands, especially for repair parts, and cut into thir bottom lines.
For people on the road fixing stuff for a living this would be a great improvement over most of the overly large and overkill laptops you have to shove in your bag now. ( at least for ones that have to pay for their own hardware ).
You really dont need much hardware to RDP/X11 a server, check a network, or hook to a diag port on a router.
They didn't say the battery was replaceable, so no fraud there. Besides, my 4Gen ipod is still going on its 1st battery, and I've had it since the 4Gens's first came out.
Perhaps apple can counter sue for a frivolous action?
If i mis-read the story review ill offer leniency to the school if it was a recommendation, not a requirement. If i didnt mis-read and it was a requirement, then i stand behind them not having the right.

Except that you are only buying the hardware.
The firmware/software are licensed to use. You dont actually get ownership.
Ummm no * theft * occurred. Try to not to mislead people here and perpetuate the misconception, OK?
Not the ones ive seen.
Yep, you beat me too it.
It will be a dark repressive place, devoid of any humanity or honest information.
Dont throw away your modems, i can see the world of local dialup BBS's returning.
Don't forget that pirates that fund terrorism use the internet.. so everyone that is on line is aiding and subject to governmental investigation.
Oh, and they use roads, to get to and fro.. so that pretty much covers the ones that aren't on line.
Perhaps they want to stick with spending the $ and time getting certified on what they are actually selling?
Can they bloat it out anymore with ads? Geesh.

The tables turn when the people involved have lots of money and have paid off key people in washington.
This is just nuts.
As will its userbase.
I didnt say TODAY, i said soon.

One rule of suits: Demand the moon, negotiate for the sky, but be willing to accept the ground.

If i did, it wasnt intentional. Not in the least.
He messed up, and now doesn't meet legal qualifications so he was sent home. I doubt it was some sinister plot, to enforce existing laws..
Now if we can send back the millions that DO get to come in when they shouldn't.
I just saw one last week. Tho it had been painted ( one of the bad things about using bare stanless panels, you cant really repair them )
And when he gets caught he goes to prison. All that risk over some, while nice, not earthshaking/freedom supporting software?
