    Guess i wont be reading the rather potentially disturbing story.

    I wonder how long it will be before local police start stopping people at random to do searches of laptop/mp3/pda contents. Much as they do now for random drug/seatbelt/terrorism/etc searches.

    "its random so we arent violating anyones rights".. my ass.

    Time for total encryption of anything you carry. Too bad i cant encrypt my ipod, or PDA.

    That means the PCs are for learning class materials, not for experimentation. Playing can be done on their own time, at home.

    Treating them like ' a business computer/user' is not a bad thing. Is called preparing for the real world.

    This should be under ' its funny, laugh'.

    If the kids have physcal access they WILL break your secuirty. All you can do is slow them down.

    Off the top of my head:

    1 - No workgroups, domain only. ( and leave the server in a inaccessible room )
    2 - Use microsft GPO templates to lock them down to a kisok
    3 - Cross your fingers and expect to be using RIS once a week ( day? ) to reload them.
    4 - Network access outside the lab should be at the least controlled in this inaccessible room, and even better, no outside access.

    Consider terminal server instead. And no diskdrives on the pc, and no outside access... Oh, and no usb...

    And have you heard about the "extra secure" features of exchange 2007? It would restrict you to geting mail only from other exchnage 2007 servers... For your security of course. Its for the kids too.

    Never had a crash on os9. Ever.

    OSX ? Perhaps twice in the last year. And i dont reboot for months so its not unexpected.

    XP? crashes on a regular basis. Cant go a week without rebooting.

    2000? Try a month and it wil be as slow as mud. Crashes, not as frequent but they happen.

    98? Lets not even go there.

    The logical conclusion is that microsoft will eat any market that has money to be gained. It may take them a while, but they will get there eventually.

    Pretty much expect that if you make *any* PC software that makes money you will be eaten at some point in the future. So enjoy it while you can.

    if 'can' thats a good way to kill the computer/cellphone/pda/etc market there. It also would hurt businesses with a lot of machines.

    If its 'do', then its a good way to kill off the internet in that country. its pretty easy to hide behind a firewall so at least you dont get changed for every pc at home, but it will still be hard on large companies. yet another fee to pass down to its customers. great

    People can only be taxed so much before they revolt. I wonder what the Germans limit is? ( hell, i wonder what our limit here in the US is now. That is part of why we were created, and now we just roll over for the next increase/addition of taxes.. grrr )

    its got nothing to do with protecting your laptop, its to protect your data.

    The guy that is stealing your laptop for drug money doesnt care if he cant get data off or even what that data might be. He just going to sell it for a quick 50 bucks on the street corner and move on.

    Now, the guy that buys it MIGHT care, and try to get your data off.

    Unfortunately, currently in this country getting justice requires you to pay for it. The people that are fighting to restrict my god given rights have somewhat larger pocketbooks.

    If they wanted too, they could make their own line of PC's, and of course vista would run better on them then on the competitors. Bundle them with enterprise agreements... eeek!

    Often, those 'freebees' you get from your rep may NOT be redistributed in any form, even for free.. ( regardless of the fact you didnt use it )

    However, somtimes they are.. It all just depends. You need to call your rep and see what you got in you hands there. A gift, or a door stop.
