And that would make Microsoft rather happy. Being able to run ONLY microsoft, and then get useres on the 'lease plan' ( remember their 'free PC' concept? ) to insure a perputual income.

As a society we *rely* on technology.. When was the last time the average guy had to go build some shelter and go kill the evening meal? I think as a individual we are less 'robust' then our ancestors.

I realize what they have when you pay with CC, but in a case like that, they would have lost the sale, with me at least.

I bet they only saw it as a threat, people importing something to their country, other then cash.

Sort of like 'outsourcing' but backwards. Cant have that, might upset the balance of money flow.

Don't kid yourself into thinking FreeSCO or IPcop, or monowall, etc can hold up with the big boys.. Sure, home, small and ( perhaps ) medium businesses could get away with it, but not the high end needs a of a large company. Between speed, and size and heat and support of the pc that can get the job done *reliably* its best to stick with the ciscos of the world in that case.

and in politics PR is 1/2 the challenge.

Do they need to wait? Of course not, but bad PR is never a good thing and they HAD to know what this would look like..
