all three are more or less posix compliant operating systems, which means that most software should run on both.
Some software that requires some functionality not found in posix will need to be ported sperately. Like xorg for instance, but, most of the gnu tools will probably run (probably) and there is the question what c library it uses, if it uses its own, there are going to be a whole myrad of other interesting problems, if it uses glibc or bsd's libc, then it's easier.
in other words:"more like your BSD's in comparision to Linux"
FYI, nintendo has never sold loss leaders (that is what selling a console below manufacturing costs is called) they have taken a small (think $10/unit) hit on the gamecube for about 3 weeks with the last pricewar, but manufacturing costs went down.
This is also why nintendo games are generally cheaper than xbox or PS2 games (especially for gamecube)
I am a long user of laptops, and, most of them haven't had a floppy drive for a couple of years now, while the BIOS updates of the vendor STILL come on floppy images:)
What I have been doing is burning a bootable CD with floppy emulation (this is default in most burn tools) and use the bios update disk as the boot image for the CD.
Might not be ideal, but, really, how often are there BIOS updates anyway?
I hate to burst your bubble here, but ALL dbms's are slightly different from eachother, this is largly because the SQL spec leaves room for these kind of things.
It's not like there is a HUGE difference, as long as no dbms specific procedural language was used (think plsql (oracle)) it's pretty trivial to port an application from one dbms to the other
The biggest differences are usually pretty subtile and indeed rather frustrating, but by no means hard to solve.
The biggest and most 'incompatible' difference between postgres and mysql is the autoincrement field really, the rest is just small fish to fix.
As someone else pointed out, there is no such thing as DHTML, it's the combination of everything available in a webbrowser and making it look and feel like a 'real' application to the end user. Basically, put a lot of the gruntwork back in the browser, to allow stuff like dragging, dropping menus whatnot.
The problem is, that the DOM model of IE is substantially different from the one W3C recommends. and that is ALSO the mayor reason why a lot of banking sites and stuff don't work well on anything but IE. IE's lack of good css support is NOTHING compared to the fact that IE's DOM is totally unstandard. It's HTML/CSS part is not all that bad, it's the worst out there, but not quite as much of a problem as the DOM changes.
check out this document for some information as to why gecko does not support this.
The IE dom isn't changed in IE7, I can guarantee you that, also, microsofts scripting language is something not completely unlike, but not quite javascript/ecmascript. In fact, nowhere does microsoft claim that they even support javascript, they call it JScript everywhere, wonder why? because it is NOT ecmascript or javascript. Sure most normal jscript is sufficiently like javascript so that it can be parsed as such, but it isn't.
The bottom line is, IE is not a browser. It can be USED as a browser, but it is basically microsofts application plaform for the web. You can write applications for IE or you can write applications for webbrowsers. Think about it, it makes sense:)
hope this answers your question, if not, feel free to ask away.
Not to mention a HUGE roll of optic fibre cable...
this isn't exactly stealthy as you'd need a DEDICATED SINGLE line of cable between the two points, otherwise, using this won't make any sense whatsoever. You can't route it, you can't do anything with it.
I actually 'passed out' in exactly the same way once, when I was about 10 or 11 or something (I think) and I lost my last 'training tooth' or whatever it's called in English. I removed it myself and when it was out, I just fell over. I could hear, and feel everything, I just couldn't move... very, very spooky.
That was tried before, it was around 1940-45, to create the master race...
Who will make the rules? Who will release those 'bots? really man... Someone else deciding who should live or die, is ALWAYS to high a price to pay, REGARDLESS of the goal.
I'm not some sort of pussy I love everyone person, but I sure as hell wouldn't want to see my uncle die (he has some genetic mental problems) because that would be better for the human race...
and lazyness isn't plagueing mankind, it's the solution;) if everyone was lazy nobody would care that they where, in fact, lazy;)
In other words, it's just inexcusable for ANY reason to have someone decide it's time for someone else to die.
Yeah, I don't really see why the world would be better of with a "anti-genocide using nanotech" law...
That would imply that NOT using nanotech is OK.
Court: Did you kill all those poor people with hindsight? Evil dictator: I did, I hate them Court: DID YOU USE NANOTECH? Evil dictator: No, of course not, that's against the LAW! Court: OK, you are free to go
I mean, really... EACH AND EVERY piece of technology will be used to kill people. And if it isn't in the first place, someone will find a creative and interesting way to use it to kill people...
people are very creative when it comes to killing other people... sad, really
While I fully agree with you, and I do,:) them winning or losing a court case isn't going to get your files back:)
plus: backed by riaa and friends they might even get away with it in the USA.:)
that's one of the main reasons I don't use microsoft software, plus I find if appaling that people just hit the "I agree" button without even READING WHAT thay are agreeing to. The last eula agreement actually stated something along the lines of "Microsoft has the right to install updates on your system without notification to the user" I find that harrasment, especially if it's bundled with a security patch that you NEED to install to keep your system secure...
I just don't like that pattern... really
and I really think most people won't care because they don't know the difference between a mp3, ogg or wma file anyway
maybe I'm full of shit in your opinion (which would probably be a valid opinion;)) I just don't like the arrogance of something like this... and ESPECIALLY calling it "trustworthy computing" I begin to wonder for whom it's supposed to be trustworthy... to microsoft/riaa/and friend or for the end-user who PAYS for their system...
I do not even *have* any MP3's/OGG's I haven't paid for. The problem that I have lies more in the fact that this alters system functionality and pushes something down the throat of customers they might not want.
Consider this: You own a mp3/ogg player that does not support DRM. Microsoft finially pushes the final patch that makes it impossible for your windows system to play ANYTHING not WMA AND signed. Suddenly, and without warning you couldn't use your MP3/OGG player anymore... considering (from my point of view) where you *have* paid for everything you listen to...
I really wouldn't put it past them to bundle some software that deletes/converts all mp3/ogg files on your PC to OGG... in fact in the eula you had to agree to get the patch I mentioned before, even says they have the "right" to do such a thing.
I am not quite sure if this is off-topic, but I'm going to take a gamble here:)
""There is an order of magnitude--more people using Automatic Update and downloading patches," Microsoft's Kean said."
This would be the system that gave the world the "DRM or be unpatched" situation, right? how trustworthy.... changing functionality along with a "security" patch
I know that bashing microsoft is a favorite past-time here:) but I'm really bothered that this "report card" doesn't include anything from the myrad of unpatched internet explorer holes and the way microsoft relicenses PATCHES... I mean, really EULA's for PATCHES? what if I DON'T agree???
really HOW is this "trustworthy" ??
I am REALLY impressed by the stupidity of these "reviewers" and how easily people forget these sorts of things... cudos to microsoft PR... AGAIN:)
I am no american so I might be talking out of my ass here, but it seems that wallmart really is trying to bring choice to ther customers, I just wonder if they'll support all OS's they ship now (mandrake, windows and lindows), if they do, and are succesfull, maybe more companies will follow...
I can't help but feel that this is "a good thing (TM)"
I'll bet dell is really wondering what they did wrong back then;)
I don't agree, I have the same problem, I am 18 years old... school dropout, but with MCSE, (barf) CNE (whahoo) and RHCE
how you might ask? because my parents paid for them, that's how
I tried to work for a big company but there I was tape-monkeying (or monkeing however you spell it) while the older people, that knew SHIT compared to me (and I know that sounded arrogant but really, they didn't)
so after 3 months of opening boxes, putting mice back in their USB slots, replacing printer toners, switching countless amounts of tapes and curing paper-jams..... I QUIT and started my own little business.
It is really working for me, I am in business for 6 months now, and althought I have to do some shitty work (users keep screwing up) I usually have te time and money to do the things I want to do... I now have 3 people working for me, I have a handsome amount of cash and so do my employees (they are all friends with the same problem)
Really dude, start your own business, it doesn't have to be large, just big enough. Just make sure you don't get that "geeky image" and make sure you wear a suit;-) (I hate that too, I am a metal head)
good luck to you, and if you want more info... send me an email.
Since you wanted to replace the drive anyway, I guess money isn't much of a problem here:
I suggest you buy a same (similar might work) drive, unscrew the controller board and replace it with the one from the new drive. Presto!
I frequently buy boxes of broken hardware at hardware markets, and usually there are more that one drive of the same type in there, and I have fixed a lot of drives this way...
If you are really brave, you can even straighten the pins later (when you get the board of off the drive) and possibly have two drives then!
One thing that I think is very important is to make sure your page is at LEAST readable and USABLE on ANY platform and ANY browser...
there's nothing as irritating as a site that just WON'T work. Use javascript if you want, but make sure your webpage doesn't rely on it, java is OK but make sure your code is compatible with the SUN java VM and not just MS java VM
ow and use flash if you want, just make sure you have an alternative, is hardly any more work, and people will love you for doing it!
I think that would be about it;-)
ow and make EXCESSIVE use a lot, you can't alt enough... I kind of like using lynx from time to time, defenetly when I am installing software on on a remote server through a SSH session.
I doubt very much that Microsoft would go to SGI, say "We'd like to buy OpenGL to destroy it, how much do you want for it?" Does that seem unlikely to you as well?
no, but if microsoft comes to your house and says "We want to buy openGL from you" wouldn't your first reaction be "why" and not "how much"
As much as I love SGI, I think they know what microsoft wants to do with GL, but for the moment I don't think SGI will let GL crash and burn, I suspect Microsoft wants the migh-end 3D modeling stations that still largely run *IX...
you would need to take the laptop apart (duh;-) ) especially all the stuff you want to make translucent, make a mold out of them and fill them with liquid plexiglass or something, I think you could get that kind of stuff somehow, but it'll be a long-winded and pretty tedious work.
you could however opt to let a company that specializes in this kind of stuff make it, but I think you'll have to reach deep in your pocket for that...
my suggestion: buy an iBook, looks cool and if it's running linux, you'll get your share of geek-girls;-)
ahhhh... geekdom at its finest :) niiiice :)
;)
now, lets see if I can get my girl to pose with a penguin beak

have fun!!
in fact, it *CAN* keep itself up to date if you install it as a non-admin user, it will just keep itself up to date without admin rights.
if it *is* installed by the IT department (as an admin) then I'd say that they'll have to have some sort of patching strategy, don't you?
