One of my current projects, along with craming for finals, is editing a presentation on Nuclear Magnetic Resonance that will be presented at a liberal arts college. Obviously I'm adjusting content for my audience. But there I just skipped the magic step, assessing the audience.

Writing to your audience is pretty hard if you don't know how to dial in who you audience is. For example, my partner and I looked at what we had and said, "Okay, there will be mostly science people at this symposium, but there will be a lot of social science people and a non-science people can wander through. Combine with the fact that we had to shrink our poster down, we decided to assume that anyone who really cared about the math will aleady know about 80% of background. That space was used for broad, conceptual explantions of theory.

Where as when this was presented a few weeks ago at a dedicated research symposium, we went buck-wild on the math, because we knew that the people there would understand and appreciate the nuance.

How did we know who would like what? Other than just looking at the groups and thinking, I'm not sure, but that is an area that deserves thought.

Take a look at cell phone providers, and their offerings... Have you noticed that the ones that tend to have better phone service tend to offer fewer other enticements?

I'm going to pick on T-mobile and Singular based on feedback from friends who use either service, spread across 4 states. Based on the adds, these two offer some of the widest array of features, like Family-Share plans and Rollover minutes. Based on why my friends tell me, they are also two of the absolute worst service carriers on the market. One friend put it this way, "If you need to call 911, your better off just screaming at the top of your lungs."

Now look at Verizon and Nextel. Other than the Walkie-talkie and GPS(which doesn't work very well), Nextel is pretty darn spartan with what they offer, but they have relativly good phone service and the walkie-talkie will let you communicate with far lesser signal than phone service. And up until recently all Verizon has offered has been flat-out better phone service.

The point of this rant is, I call for a vote:

All those who want a gait sensing cell phone, raise your hand.
All those who would rather that R&D money goes into making my calls clearer, raise your hand.

My original point was that I like to be able to spread my material out. You can't do that on a computer or an E-book reader. You can have dual, or even triple monitors, but that doesn't help when you are working with 15 sources.

      • I know I'm going to get roasted for saying this, but here goes: If you keep a firearm in the house, I recomend that you get a BB gun and start teaching any children older than 7 or 8 how to safely handle a weapon. I understand some of the logic for Microsoft's Product Activation system. I get the whole activation after installation, but what I don't get is the shut-down part. The prog will take a snap-shot of your hardware upon installation. Then if you hardware changes too much it will shut you down. Will the system stay functioning if you make a number of changes over time, or is it just the number of hardware changes that sets it off? Either way, the program will still detect a number of recongized components. So how does it come to the conclusion that it has been pirated? At the risk of anthropomorphizing, until software is installed, it has no awareness. Once it is installed, it becomes aware of the hardware it is installed on. Pirated software is the same way, it is unaware of anything until it is first installed. Then once it is installed, it also becomes aware. All that said, what is the logic that was used when Microsoft decided that if software detects a number of hardware changes, it has been pirated. The best analogy I can think of is a person and their clone. Until you go to an outside source, there both the person and the clone will think they are the original. But Microsoft's deacivation system would be like the original person getting a heart & lung transplant and their immune system decides that they are now a clone. Can anybody explain this to me?
