  1. Never Die on Which Desktop Distro Will Die First? · · Score: 2, Informative

In a sense you can say distros never die, as their GPL source will always live. Corel came back from the grave with Xandros, let's just hope that it doesn't 'die' again.

IMHO it's hard to sell any distro without giving some kind of 'sample' (i.e. ISOs online.) I can see that distros will not be a success as they don't really make any money at the moment. It is my belief that RedHat is not successful because of their desktop distro but because of their server distros and services they provide.

I'm sure we'll go through tons of forgotton distros but as time progresses, so will these distros progress, and eventually we'll have a distro with the true stability of Linux along with the smoothness of something like OS X/Windows/[insert favorite desktop OS here]

Look, I had absolute hell with the IBM 75GXP Deskstar HDD, but that whole 330 hour uptime was a whole other story. The fact is, if you're going to have a server that you're always going to keep on and EXPECT it to be reliable, don't use IDE. IDE is known not to be reliable, go with SCSI, they're made for servers.

Of course, since the Deskstar fiasco, I will never buy another hard drive from that company ever again. I use the HDD for desktop use and didn't leave it on that long, I installed a fan on it, just to keep it cool. That think broke down twice. I hated it. I've heard people saying "mine hasn't had anything go wrong with it." I'm sorry bub, but if half their drives are crapping out, and the other half isn't, you still have a major problem. Whatever IBM did to make those 75GXP Deskstars, I hope they never repeat it again.

  14. Great News for a Great Distro on Debian Desktop Subproject Launched · · Score: 2, Insightful

Of course there is no such thing as a "best distro" but this Desktop Debian will bring the best of both worlds. Sure, Debian's stable branch may be a bit outdated but it's stable, and that's one of the main things Linux should be advertised as an alternative to Windows. I'm sorry, but when programs in KDE start crashing, it makes Linux look bad. I know KDE crashing doesn't crash Linux but end users will still see this as instability in Linux.

Also Debian offers easy maintaining and upgrading, all was really lacking was ease-of-use for desktop users and newbies. If this "Desktop Debian" becomes a success I see it as a great step forward for Linux on the Desktop. Mandrake has made some great steps forward with things like universal menus, and easy configuration tools, we just need that and some stability without all the bloat. All in all, I still have faith that Linux will be a success on the desktop.

Monorails are quiet, safe, easy to maintain, and fast (Maglev technologies = 300+ mph).
