This is SOOOOO true. Most teachers and administration freak out when I mention Linux not because the kids can't learn it, but the Teachers and Administration are too damn stupid to learn it themselves.

I once left an iMac on by accident that had Linux installed on it. Non-English speaking (in the process of learning English) kids were already playing games with it and typing up notes in KOffice. To me, this proves that most young people many not be able to fully understand computers, but they sure as hell have a lot more curiosity than most fundamentalist Teachers and Administrators do. Later that week, the teacher insisted that MacOS should be installed back on it, I refused because I believed the kids could handle it (and they could.) So she went ahead and had the SysAdmin put MacOS back on it.

Isn't one of the main points of education is to allow students to adapt new tools and use them to their full advantage. *sigh* No wonder education is so screwed up in this country. Schools are washed up in political crap and being politically correct. What happened to good old fashioned learning? How about teaching kids to think on their own? Maybe the government just doesn't want the future of America to love freedom and individualism, they just want us to be tax-paying drones.

  16. Why Not Monorail? on Vegas: Monorails v. Gridlock · · Score: 1
Well, I tried to be part of the /. blackout but this article hits home.

As a huge monorail fan(atic) I think this idea is a great idea. What's not to like about monorails? They're quiet, clean, and fast. Monorails make hardly any noise compared to trolleys and cars. They're clean and don't cause any pollution, they're also friendly to the environment since they don't interfere with natural migratory paths, and can integrate easily in big cities. Since they're elevated they don't have to stop at traffic lights like trolleys do. So they're average speed is much higher than cars and trolleys.

If cost seems to be a factor, don't worry this construction is taking place in Las Vegas. You'll be sure that casinos are pouring money into exaggerated stations and whatnot. Monorails can be built much cheaper. Don't forget about the long-term costs. As trolleys may seem cheaper at first, but in the long run maintenance and accident wise, monorails are much cheaper.

Don't worry about Monorails not being 'proven.' Asia has many monorails that run reliable for years (even some at a profit.) We also have local systems like the Seattle Monorail and the Disney Land and Disney World Monorails. If you think that the Disney Monorails are just 'rides' think about their purpose: they get people from Point A to Point B efficiently. Isn't that the whole purpose of mass transit?

Monorails were way ahead of their time, especially with the ALWEG Monorail in the 1960s. Now is the time to consider ways to fix our present day traffic problems with more technically advanced technologies. Widening highways is no longer an option for many cities and only serves as a 'band-aid' solution. Trolleys can no longer accommodate our present problems due to their lines being ripped up and replaced with roads. I embrace fellow geeks to look in awe at such an engineering marvel, that can prove to be the most cost-effective solution in the future.

I've been pirating software for years now, do I feel guilty? Hell no! What I don't get is why software companies are getting all anal over software piracy. First of all, most pirates are pretty damn young (I'm thinking about 13-20.) I ask the software companies, how many of these youngens have $609 to pay for Photoshop? Or $3495 to pay for 3ds Max? Probably about 0.00009% of them do (thanks to rich parents.) Most of us (including me,) don't.

I actually believe Warez helps software companies. Think about it, there's no chance of these kids affording it normally, but if they pirate the software for free they get to learn a new proprietary program. If more and more people use it, than companies might demand it in the future giving these proprietary companies more market share.

That's not to say 'Warez' sites are good sources for pirating. Actually nowadays they suck. I just visited a few and there were endless popups, force voting, broken or non-existant links, or even loading of javascript virii!

Of course this might become a good thing for the Open Source movement. As it is harder to pirate software, more people might start using open source software like Linux, BSD, GiMP, etc.

Third, politicians don't do what 'we' tell them to do, they do what their party tells them to do (and parties do whatever their contributers tell them to do, so that kind of ties in with the second point.) Fourth, people don't really vote for the person they believe fits the job, rather they vote on looks, speeches (which are usually written by someone else,) or some other BS personal issue. I remember when we had campaigns in High School for student body, and the candidates were asked question that totally did not relate to the job. Also I asked a friend why he wouldn't vote for someone like Ralph Nader or Harry Browne, he replied that, "I would rather vote for someone who could win." This is sad, he would rather vote for someone that he thinks everyone else would vote for, instead of voting with his heart. Yes, I may be using examples from High School kids, but remember, they are the future, and it looks pretty damn scary.
