  1. Re:Military Tech on Intergalactic Bounty Hunters Wanted · · Score: 1

Or more likely a few generations ahead simply because it's not financially feasible for companies to try to sell the products. Who else but the US DoD could afford cutting edge tech? Think about it, what do you think engineers could build if they had a near unlimited budget?

Young kiddies probably isn't the demographic they're aiming for anyway. They're probably going after the Teen-Adult demo, the ones with tons of spare cash to spend on games.

Lest we forget all the massive technological claims they made about the PSX or PS2 before it was released.

That sounds more like a head in the sand attitude. "We're doing fine. No worries. We are making money".

Being complacent gets you nowhere in a cutthroat business where things are measured in pure numbers. (Microsoft lost a TON of money on their gaming division, but are they or anyone else worried? No.)

The systems that live the longest aren't necessarily the 'best'. Nintendo needs some killer games to get the GC off of store shelves. You can play 'kiddie' games on any console. (bad move on Nintendo's part when they aimed the GC at a younger audience initially - most consoles are bought by young adults or teens or teens with their parents money). Give people a reason to get a GC over an PS2 or Xbox!

A school teaching the 'fundamentals' using newer technology, like php, .NET, firewire, usb, irda, would hopefully give you a better chance of getting a decent job than one still using older technology.

If you've ever shared a computer lab with an education student.. (you know, the ones that try to power the computer on/off with the monitor on/off, or use the cdrom as a muffin holder..etc)

It's not so hard to understand why computers have such a hard time in the classroom when the teachers have no idea how to use them. It's like having a top of the line sports car but having no idea how to drive.

We had error in one of our old pseudo-inhouse apps. You'd be puttering along, then all of a sudden you'd get a message:

    "Elvis has left the building"

Of course no one could find this tiny chunk of code where this error occurred.

This is the danger you take in asking for opinions on a public forum (not just /. either). You WILL get a reaction, positive and negative, helpful and judgemental. People assume that this kid is spoiled or has no life or is a video game addict. But then again, how many /.'ers wouldn't love to have a portable LCD screen for themselves? Especially when they were 17?

I don't know about that assumption that the media/news outlets never do retractions. If you do read an actual physical newspaper, you'll see that usually on the editor's page they do print retractions and corrections.

It's quite possible that a) they don't even know that the story is wrong, b) no one has read and analyzed some tiny newstory from AP/Reuters/etc.. and c) no one has told them it's wrong.

Why don't you write your local paper that ran the story, and let them know? How else are they going to know to print a retraction/correction?
