Empire is probably worth one night in line. Of the SW films it is the only one that has stood the test of time. And the one that Lucas has left the most untouched.

Thanx for that. My sentinments exactly. After reading a story or a particular post you can almost hear the call - "Cue the Mac Fanboys!". I too am getting tired of it. And for all the reasons you enumerate. And to think I almost purchased an IMac. I value freedom more than "lickability"

Why don't all you "family sysadmins" just say "no" to helping clean up Windows messes. Windows users have to learn how expensive it really is to run that OS. Cleaning up after them is a little like enabling an alcoholic. If you keep doing it for them they will never have a reason to change. I get asked all the time and I always say "I don't do Windows, sorry".
Michael
It may be overkill but Scilab http://scilabsoft.inria.fr/ is a very
powerful math program. I can't even begin to list what it does. I don't know how open the code is, but it is free (beer). Comes with most large distros too.

Linux is supposed to put the fun back in computing. Linux is supposed to give computing back to the user. It seems like these Gentoo users are having just that. Do any Windows or OSX users have as much fun with their OS as Linux users of any stripe? Making disaparaging remarks (without malice) of other Linux users is all part of the fun (really) - I'm sure they can take it. My Window-using friends look at me like I'm a nut when I tell them about my my travails with my Linux (debian-based) system. Screw them. I'm having a blast. Michael
I don't know if it counts as a blog but http://www.truthout.com// is my choice for American political coverage (I'm Canadian).
This years election in the U.S. is proving to be SOOOOOO entertaining. Kind of like wrestling crossed with a soap opera, crossed with a reality show. It makes our little election (back in June) look like amateur hour.

Easily the most amazingly bad movie ever. A "Born-Again, Glam-Disco, Futuristic, Apocalyptic, Christian, Cautionary Tale" (made Israelis). If you haven't seen it you cannot truly be called "cool" Out on DVD real soon now (really). Michael
Everyone I know has bootleg Windows software on their computers. From copies of Autodesk used in a home business to many many copies of Office, Photoshop, Frontpage, XP and on and on. My least favourite feature of Windows is how its users don't know they can't afford to use it. Until the proprietary software world gets a handle on bootleging of their software Linux has zero chance of making it to the desktop in a big way. As a Linux user trying to tell people about "Free" software, I get looked at like a raving lunatic. They already have tons of "free" (and easier to use) software on their computers.
Michael
Just a though/question. Why don't the Xiph.org guys help out with the development of BBC's Dirac codec instead of trying to re-invent the wheel? It will have much greater acceptance with the BBC behind it as opposed to trying to sell Theora. We really need a free video codec for the future and competing ones doesn't help.
Michael
My complaint is about the "O" in TCO. You don't own your copy of Office you license it. Shouldn't they be comparing the TCL of Office vs. the TCO of OO.o?

I'd like to point out that for the price of Photshop (which is a very good program) you can get Photoshop+Gimp. So why put down the GIMP?
I agree. All I ever say is get at least 512 megs of memory. Buying a modern computer is a no-brainer for about 90% of the population (and 100% of the people I know). It really doesn't matter.

Maybe somebody can answer this. Wouldn't attaching a (very, VERY) large lightsail to an asteroid be the easiest way to change its orbit. If it was large enough it would produce sufficient force over a long enough time period to change its orbit enough that it would no longer be a hazard. I have never seen this idea in print and I wonder if it is because it would fail in some way I am not seeing.
Michael
Exactly. Open source is simply the scientific method (slightly modified) applied to product development. Newton's quote, "If I have seen farther it is because I have stood on the shoulders of giants" is descriptive of open source development. There is a lot to be said for not having to re-invent the wheel.
The Seventies. It wasn't that the studios decided to suddenly start making good movies. It was more a case of them not knowing what kind of movies would sell. So they let filmakers have free reign over content. Read the book: "Easy Riders, Raging Bulls" for the full story.
What if Hollywood acted the way game companies act. We would still be waiting for LOTR TTT. Peter Jackson would make some comment like: "It will be released when it is ready."
Some of the delay may be attributed to the immaturity of the game industry (in relation to Hollywood) but still...

Kpovmodeler: http://www.kpovmodeler.org/ is also quite useful. It is a part of the KDE graphics package in most distributions.

I assume it was posted as a chance to make fun of Enderle. I like the part where he is afraid someone will fondle his laptop.
No rainbow effect on a 3-panel DLP projector. Unfortunately they are still very expensive.
Didn't it seem strange that Mozilla, Netscape, nor Opera were not even mentioned in that article. The author acted like IE invented pop-up blocking.
