My wife, a non-Linux user sat down with our Ubuntu 10 laptop last weekend to video chat over Skype. It worked great for the most part! However, after having the video in full screen mode the application hung and, unable to get out of full screen mode, effectively the computer was unusable and had to be power buttoned.
At least it wasn't a totally bad Linux experience for my wife but I wish the Linux desktops and (more specifically) the applications that run on it were more stable!
Why is it that for every Microsoft vulnerability the many in the slashdot community has this "See? Microsoft.. Insecure." attitude but for every Linux vulnerability the same community will say There's no problem here.. It was patched. Move along. Linux is still secure. And my favorite "Linux doesn't have viruses."
Sometimes those in the Linux community need a taste of reality..
mspohr; Yes this is news.. Just as much as Patch Tuesday is news.
Preface: I had previously had heat issues with my Nvidia 9800 when running Photoshop.. My computer crashed hard. I took a look at the PC and found that the GPU heatsink was covered in dust and the fan was spinning but not able to pull any air through. Since then the card is clean and pulling air through but I don't know what damage might have been done.
I've experienced crashing issues in the middle of playing Starcraft II. I believe every time my system crashed it was during game play and not during the video's but I know that the crash was due to the video card (one time I got a blue screen with the nvidia driver listed and the other's the system's video got corrupted and it locked hard.) I do now know what kind of condition my card is in due to possible previous damage from lack of cooling. But I do know that Starcraft II stresses it enough now to heat it up and crash it even with a clean heatsink.
Please provide better support for web cams.. I had the worst luck getting them to work with linux apps (And OS X).. I feel it is mostly the fault of linux app developers but anything you can do on the driver/OS side would be great!
I love SuSE, it's my favorite distro.. But I just find the linux community funny sometimes.. Case in point.. 'MP3 support out of the box.' Come on people that should have been an 'out of the box.' feature in 2000. This is 07' And people wonder why MS still sells their OS.
You are forgetting that even with tons of bandwidth, connections still drop out from time to time. Users will not be happy when their session and possibly data is lost for this reason. Application and Media Service Providers will have a huge market to exploit in the coming years but this will by no means replace the local desktop. Being able to work on data locally without fear of loosing your work because of a loss of connection that occurs at the drop of a hat is paramount. Microsoft knows when the market it moving away from it's ideals. It may take them a year or two but they will only adapt their products to better suit the users [said] desire for hosted applications. (After all, they are the borg:-P)
... where we can track the van's location via GPS? I figure since they're going to be driving by taking pictures of us, we should at least know where they're going.
Although i have not attended i think Colorado Technical in Colorado Springs is a very good school. They have an awesome course from what it looks like.
I use Snapstream for my HTPC. I've been using it for over a year now and i can tell you that it's great. It's a very stable, easy to use PVR software package. Check it out!

We have two rovers on mars sending back pictures and data. That's more than the other, what, 30 atempts did. Lay off.
Need you remember that some of the RIAAs tactics were to put those bad songs into the mix?
