Too much about cutting edge technology is about bragging rights that I've got the latest greatest whatever. Personally, I can't tell the difference between HL2 running at 100 fps or 200 fps, I'm a little more concerned with the game play itself. It all turns into a big pissing contest. Yeah sure, lots of hardware improvements are good, but I pity the poor fanboys who break the bank just to get something that's better than their friends.
who cares about the ads in the free version?

Opera 8 Released

· Score: 1, Troll
I'm a little tired of listening to people bitch about "why should I pay for opera when I can get --- for free....". Download the free version of opera, and ignore the small ad which is less than 1" tall and tucked away in a tool bar that wouldn't be part of the web page anyways. If you can't manage to ignore this little ad, then you should try looking at the web page you're browsing instead of looking for problems with the browser itself. You're the type of wanker who complain about the quality of a stereo because they listen to the noise instead of the music. Self righteous bunch of wankers... These whiners are going to say something along the lines that these ads are spyware or some other load of crap. Opera has the best security standards as well as the best control over popups and cookies. They are the most respectful of user's privacy out there. So quit you're bellyaching.
I just watched the teaser and I can honestly say that I expect the movie to be absolute crap. The style of the teaser is devoid of hint of humour (british or otherwise). The hollywood grassfuckers couldn't leave well enough alone, just like when they had to make an american version of 'Priscilla, Queen of the desert', just to americanize the humour forthe masses.
When the dvd hardware market gets saturated and there are fewer and fewer features to add to the latest and greatest players and discs, the manufacturing industry will push for a new format in order to start the whole cycle again. A prime example of this was when 35mm film cameras were replaced (to some degree) by the 'new and improved' APS film, it had a smaller negative area which meant poorer quality photos. The added features were of questionable benefit. The reality was that the industry couldn't tweak the existing technology much more. Where's the profit in that??
This is all part and parcel of the so called "digital amnesia" that is taking place. What memories will people have twenty years down the road if everything was comunicated via email. Digital cameras are great for the present but again, how are they preserved over long time periods. Burning stuff onto CDs will work, but most CDs are quite unstable (Verbatim excepted, they use a AZO dye but are more expensive).
Even the first video disks made in the 80's aren't playable by anything today, what's to guarantee that CDs will be playable in 20 - 30 years. Printing out digital pictures is no more archival than CDs, most people will print it out on paper which typically is not acid-free and will yellow quickly. Compare this to Kodachromes which look great 50 years later. Cibachromes will last centuries. There's nothing in our new digital media arsenal that can compare. Enjoy your memories now, cause they won't last...
All this homeland security BS makes me wonder what the U.S. is fighting for. Is it for the democratic ideal? It it for the ability to live in the "Land of the Free"? The democratic process seems to have been hijacked years ago by lobbyists and soft money. The american democracy is more of an oligopoly now.
As for the land of the free, this seems to be little more than some mantra that the U.S. government uses to reassure the people whilst they grab more powers. I know that this is a bit of a rant, but all this is beginning to piss me off (a bit).
You probably have to double that electric bill. You would have to consider air conditioning to remove that heat from the room, you can't just open a window. When you stack these new dense blades in a tower, you are basically creating a chimney where the top blades are being cooked by all the lower blades. Not really a minor consideration.
Someone once calculated the amount of heats created by switching a bit on or off and then calculated how much heat would be generated by a brute force approach to cracking a 1024 bit encryption key. This worked out to be about the same amount of energy as the sun puts out in one day. I'm not claiming that is entirely accurate but it makes me wonder.
The SunFire 15K can have upto 106 processors in a single box. These Super Bricks can have upto 64 processors in a "Brick" then you'll have to connect to another brick which adds to latency which is the bane of parallel computing. So they may physically be more dense but architecturally they are less efficient.
I've been using DSL for a couple of years but am seriously considering dropping it. They've up'ed the rate and cut services. They're currently capping uploads and downloads which not only bones me for p2p but more importantly I can't listen to online radio or other steaming media. I'm being charged $8.00 per GB over my cap limit which means streaming media adds up pretty quick.
Never mind getting new users, they're operating like a collusionary oligopoly which pisses off current users as well.
I own hundreds of CDs and records which I paid for from which the record industry and musicians got their rightful dues. If I want to convert them into MP3's and cram them into an ipod or just have a couple of thousand songs randomly playing while I work on the computer, surely I don't have to pay for that song again just because I want a different media format. I'm not paying for the plastic they're printed on, I'm paying for the music and that music is the same regardless of the media format.
Microsoft can't act as the arbiter for Fair Use. They're not even in the music industry (as far as I know)
Typically, good 35mm lenses have much higher resolution (i.e. lines/mm) than good quality medium or large format lenses. This means that there is more information available in a 35mm frame than is available in a comparable portion of a larger IMAX film frame. Assuming the film can out resolve the lense, the transfer from 35mm to IMAX shouldn't completely be due to interpolation. This means that with good algorithms etc, they should scale well (not perfectly tho').
Sounded like Strongbad was narrating it...
not much memory for that sized machine. Our M9000 machines have 2 TB of ram per node.
I refer to this as digital amnesia

Reminds me of one of my favorite sites. http://www.dack.com/web/bullshit.html Very useful.

not tripe, hot vulcans are what sells...
me fail english, that's unpossible...
We're just about to mothball a 32 processor SP, maybe I'll drag it home. It could do double duty as a furnace.

I figure it won't be long now until porn sites are offering remote robotic wanking machines. It would be the next logical step.

I agree, there should be more corperate taunting going on out there. It would be a lot more entertaining for us that a bunch of suits posturing.

Makes me think of Zaphod's sunglasses that went opaque when he was in danger. Much more useful I think.
