Say what you will about johnny boy, but if this becomes a popular trend, we might have linus teaching the finer points of Operating system programming and design, or alan cox taking a computer ethics class, (Maybe thats a good way for older computer scientists to earn money, by teaching classes?)
Regardless, im sure this will raise the popularity of the university. but remember: theres more to a teacher than raw skill, there are alot of other factors involved (marking fairly, communication abilities, attitude)
its the SSSCA dressed up to look like something consumers would want, the entire thing reeks of "ca-ching" by the copyright holders (MPAA and RIAA respectively).
Move along, nothing to see here.
what would really rock, is if they gave us all the details (equipment etc) that we could order off there site, to actually build the card.
i may know asmuch about electronics as most people know about nuclear physics, but that would be quite cool if you ask me, is it even remotely possible?
For those of you getting pissed off about a 1.0 release, dont worry, not much longer, there even planning the parties
(i wish i could go, but no ones having one in perth, what about in the spirit of computer-ness they have a LAN party?)
For those looking for new Features

Wait untill 3.1 before getting all those sexy new features u know u want;p, kde 3.1 has tabbed browsing support in konqueror, and a few other nifty enhancments, but for those wanting a stable kde release, this is getting pretty stable.
the.kids doesnt strike me as all that bad, its a good way to help keep kids off sites they really dont need to visit, without censoring the rest of the net
Wiretapping is crap, but, i dont mind the.kids thing
Im sorry i wish i could say im excited, its certianly a VERY good idea, and noe in desprate need of realising, but untill i see the code, its just more hype.
Certianly be a great way for non coders to contribute though, so many times my linux friends say "oh id love to contribute to open source but i can't code", this would definatly be one way, and one which requires very little effort too.
Yet More proof (asif we needed anymore) that competition _WORKS_
Imagine, just imagine, if the OS market was like this. i CRINGE to think about how good our operating systems would be
(think VR, 3d Interfaces that are common, everything you'd want from an OS)
yer, as i said after i wrote that it sounded a bit silly, and i suppose it is.
but still, i stand by my no-compiler-writers people on there
(perhaps have one person whos entire job it is is to say "no, a compiler can't do that" is a good fix?)
It might just be me, but to me, it seems.. well.. wrong, for someone recommending the C++ standard to be part of ANY commercial company who's job it is to write C++ code.
Ok that sound's a bit silly on the surface but think about it: they might recommend specs that make thing's easier for them but harder for other's, or basically have a hidden agenda. this is ESPECIALLY true for a company like Microsoft who.. well, Lets not kid ourselves Microsoft Apologists: rarely follow standards, and tend to "embrace and extend" the standards they do choose to follow. it just seems like a reciepe for a little underhanded.
But maybe i'm missing something, anyone want to make a constructive critism?
This basically happened because of simple competition. Here in australia, We basically have one option: Telstra, every single provider except optus goes through them on the wholesale level, so they basically control the marketplace, (there plans btw are a stupidly expensive 89 dollars a month for 3 gig of traffic per MONTH, why even bother having broadband?)
With stuff like this in england, hopefully our goverment will open its eyes and realise how stiffling a monopoly for a telco can really be, its about damn time we started to open up this vital service structure a little more, let some competition in.
I'm far from a microsoft fan, my entire career depends on my unix admin skills, but being a dabbeler in programming (mostly procedual stuff) has really opened my eyes on programming in general, and c# is an EXCELLENT object oreintated language, as soon as i picked up a little c#, object oreintation just started to make sense, i had difficulty with it before in c++ but now the peices fall into place.
Combine this with the excellent garbage collector features, and EXTREMLY easy to use GUI designer (just as easy as visual basic) and ability to import code from other languages and use it combines to make C# a great language, I for one am extremly happy gnome is supporting it and hope you all give it a try. Tell me what you think.
Anyone in the perth area is welcome to email me(arevill@bigpond.net.au) and ill give you a little tour:)
THATS the problem with all these aqua pads, these expensive palms:
They LOOK cool, but WHO will buy them, you need something that people dont want to just play with, they want to BUY and USE and keep. Toy's dont make profit, extremly useful, simple, and most importantly: COST EFFECTIVE devices are what most people want.
you left out one vital little peice of infromation:
1. Redhat doesnt make the databases they disturbute with redhat, therefore theres no alterior motive other than making users life easier
2. Microsoft In my opinion will use this database on everyones desktop business to basically increase teh speed of Sql server (they did it with internet explorer, when you push it so far down in the kernel its bound to make some speed increases (hello Tux webserver (if thats what its name was) written by Redhat that was a Web server directly embedded in the kernel to improve performance)
So as you can see, this is a very diffirent situation
Im the author of BPwatcher, a usage meter program that alot of us have to use instead of teh telstra usage meter program to watch our usage and ill tell you this: we certainly dont like getting pushed around us aussie's, the grouping together we do to help each other, and the help we offer each other, the amount of broadband projects cant even begin to be measured, we have the CBP (community broadband project) whirlpool, and a dozen other little groups all trying to get us what we want:
Decent broadband.
Aussies dont just complain, we do something about it!
i remmeber reading an ad on the web saying it would tell you if c# is going to "be just another visual basic", when i went in there, the article just crapped one, can anyone please awnser me for this, if the gnome developer is taking it seriously im sure its very good but i want other opinions.
Cheers
Peter
I live in australia, and i can tell you, this country has absolutly NO IDEA when it comes to the internet, the broadband we have costs 89 australian dollars a month for a pitiful 3 gig limit, our minister for IT banned forwarding email without permission, he also said "broadband is for kids playing games", the ignorance of the australian goverment about anything to do with computers is beyond pathetic
(P.s. there is another company called Optus@home who offer a decent amount but they are not available to the majority of australians)

im geniuenlyl asking, not claiming your wrong, how do you KNOW mandrake is making money, we can take a guess with redhat, but mandrake?

With the review that says, boring first hour, much much better as it goes on.
This movie is no where near as good as the original starwars, but it makes up for the phantom menance. Go see it, You will probably like it.

sigh. I wish it really was the OS market.

C# is an incredibly good laungage

html tags are for whimps, real men use capitals and _UNDERSCORES_ to make there point

And does windows already have this.. (YES IM STUPID and im honestly not trolling) i dont understand..
heh, we have a 3 gig limit too

It never occured to you that perhaps other coders will rise in the place of those who leave? how stupid
