  1. Oh, now it makes sense on Microsoft Game Software Preps Soldiers For Battle · · Score: 2, Funny

I never knew what MineSweeper was for. It surely wasn't useful as entertainment.

  2. Re:Yeah, great idea on India Hanging Up On 25 Million Cell Phones · · Score: 3, Interesting

  3. If that's the fair price, then on No More Fair-Price Refund For Declining XP EULA · · Score: 2, Funny

I'd like to see which stores offer a $6 OEM option for buying XP licenses when you buy a bare motherboard.

  4. Aren't netbooks more likely to get transported? on Netbooks Have Higher Failure Rate Than Laptops · · Score: 2, Insightful

The whole selling point about netbooks is that you take it with you wherever you go, including the bus, the plane, and as such it's stuffed in backpacks or bumped around all the time. The average laptop probably spends more time in one location and isn't transported as often, since a large portion of people are using them as replacement desktops that could be taken home if needed, but often aren't. Myself I leave my laptop locked up at work if I don't need to do any work at home.

  5. Unfortunately Comp Sci isn't considered science on Linus Torvalds For Nobel Peace Prize? · · Score: 4, Interesting

The example that Eric Schmidt stated to the New York Times was that Tim Berners Lee should have been given a Nobel Prize, but the Nobel community doesn't consider computer science to be in the same spectrum as other traditional life or physic sciences. I think both Tim is without question worthy of a Nobel, and there's a strong case for Linus as well, but it's questionable whether either has the political clout to win.

  6. Microsoft Cordless Phone on Home Phone System That Syncs To Computer? · · Score: 1

It was a product that was just a little ahead of its time for the home market, but it never really took off. Cool in concept, being able to listen to voicemail on pc or the phone. If I remember correctly though, the downside for why I didn't buy one was that I wasn't leaving the computer on all day back then. Microsoft Cordless Phone

  8. Singles vs Albums on The Golden Age of Infinite Music · · Score: 1

With so much music to listen to, will such a person bother listening to a whole album from that artist, or will that person just listen to a playlist of singles? I'm inclined to believe that with infinite music available, you'd skim the top of the best hits of each artist, and omit discovering other songs on the album that would be worth investigating. Infinite music doesn't mean you have infinite time available to listen to it all. Wheras when you had limited amounts of music, you probably spent more time with each one of your limited number of cd's, and probably grasped aspects of it that you never picked up on the first or second listen. Even with itunes, will artists bother to make "albums" anymore? Maybe just a single every now and then is the way it's headed. It's too early for me to say whether that will be a good or a bad thing though.

  9. It doesn't cost more than Wii on Nintendo Announces DSi XL · · Score: 4, Informative

It's the same price (in Japan). The Wii is ¥20,000 in Japan, and apparently so is the DSi LL. It looks like you're converting the price of the DSi LL against the weak dollar and using the $220 price, and comparing that against the US price of the Wii ($199).

  10. Why doesn't the BSA promote Linux instead? on BSA Says 41% of Software On Personal Computers Is Pirated · · Score: 1

I'm willing to bet that most of the people who are pirating software are doing so on Windows & Mac platforms. If the BSA wants to stop software piracy, why not promote Linux instead?

  11. Wrong audience on Adobe's iPhone Hail Mary · · Score: 1

Compiling Flash for iPhone isn't about replacing existing tools for experienced developers. What it will do is lower the barrier for entry and ensure that a new flood of crap will now be available to run on iphone.

  12. No different than Hard Drive advertising on Legal Group Says Unlimited Broadband Promotes Piracy · · Score: 4, Interesting

Consumers don't understand what a terrabyte is. They do understand that if it holds hundreds of thousands of songs, then it must be huge though. So hard drive manufacturers often advertise how many songs, movies etc a hard drive can hold. It never said that you should be filling it with illegal music or movies, even though most people don't legally have a terrabyte of music. It's more or less to convey massive size to someone who doesn't understand what the technical metric measures out to. So if australia's got a problem with the ISP, let's see them apply that rule evenly and ban hard drives too.

  14. It seems the article also tested a netbook on IE8 Beats Other Browsers In Laptop Battery Life · · Score: 4, Informative

The summary would lead you to believe that they only tested two laptops. However, they also tested a netbook and in this case, "chome 2" (their spelling, not mine), won. Why didn't the submitter didn't mention this test where IE8 didn't win?

  15. He makes the arguement that it's about software on Former Sega Prez Discusses the Dreamcast's Failure · · Score: 3, Insightful

I agree with him. However, the Dreamcast had some of the best software available, including the best sports games, arcade games and fighting games. I play a lot of RPGs and still think Skies of Arcadia is one of the best ever. It had games that were ported onto XBOX and went on to become some of the best XBOX games. It had cutting edge online gaming with Phantasy Star, innovative arcade adventures like Shemue, and better graphic versions of exisiting hits like Tony Hawk (a truly superior version compared to PS1). So with all that great software, then there's still something missing to his arguement - if it's all about the software, and the dreamcast had a ton of great software, then maybe you need to come up with a better reason why it failed.

  16. In order to get funding on Future of NASA's Manned Spaceflight Looks Bleak · · Score: 5, Funny

  17. Headline could have been phrased better on PS3-Compatible Phone Coming In October · · Score: 4, Insightful

  19. Caught in a headline on We're In the Midst of a Literacy Revolution · · Score: 3, Informative
the headline makes an attractive statement - that the computer revolution is improving student's writing.

The headline failed to mention that the students in the analysis were all Stanford students, and the article buried that information in the middle. At first it states that the research was done at Stanford, and then reveals that the samples were all Stanford students.

Given that Stanford is a world class college institution, analyzing the progress of their writing is way too narrow of a sample size to say that all young people are improving their skills.

What about people who don't make in Stanford? What about the kids who don't make it to college? Are they a part of the writing revolution too? Or are they left behind while we make tantalizing headlines about the elite students of America? The article summary would lead you to believe that this revolution is about general literacy.

  20. Bad Numbers in Summary on Criminals Prefer Firefox, Opera Web Browsers · · Score: 4, Informative

Actually the article says 46% Firefox and 26% Opera. Did the submitter really need to round the numbers for the article summary, when more accurate numbers would be more meaningful?

If it was really 50%/25%, I'd suspect a low sample size, i.e. 1 IE user, 2 Firefox users, and 1 Opera user.

  21. CDC Data for Obesity on US Life Expectancy May Have Peaked · · Score: 3, Insightful

When you look at the 20 year trend chart for obesity in the United States, it's clear that there's going to be repercussions. It's appalling what has happened. The cost of obesity isn't going to manifest right away, but over the next two decades, it's going to hit the mortality rate hard. And to think that people fear disease but don't seem to be doing too much about preventable self-inflicted health problems.

A large portion of the failed units are simply repaired, but many are repalced. In fact, I'm sure that there are quite a few people who don't bother with the warranty and buy new units (I know many who have).

  24. 80% of iPhone users? on Standalone GPS Receivers Going the Way of the Dodo · · Score: 3, Insightful

If 80% of the iPhone users use it for turn by turn directions RIGHT NOW, just what application are they using? If they are referring to the google maps application, it isn't something that you'd use while driving, like a true GPS device does. It's the same as using your web browser to get directions to a location and printing it out, but conveniently the article doesn't mention the percentage of users who use the web browser to print directions. It just simply took a simple scenario, distorted the facts and presented it as evidence.

It also didn't mention other big reasons that people don't buy standalone GPS devices - it's already integrated in the car. A second factor is that buying standalone devices increases the chances of someone breaking into the car to stealing it, often causing more damage than the device is worth.
