Yes, back in the day...
Back in the day, we had to walk 20 miles in the snow to get to the town's graphics processor... (it was an ATI Rage, and we hailed it as the greatest thing ever...), then we had to take the pixel that it gave us and walk all the way another 20 miles to get to the town shader... he'd shade each and every pixel by hand... once we finally got our pixel, we'd have to walk the 20 miles back home again to put out pixel right in the memory, with our DIP switches.... And don't you forget it Michael, it wasn't frames per minute, you'd be lucky if you could get 1 frame per hou-- whatzat sonny??
... that we got trolled? I mean, come on! The latest press release from VisionTek states that they have expanded their manufacturing capabilities, and they have NOTHING to say about them going "boom" or other synonyms for it.
My iPAQ does much the same with it's CF sleeve, and Linux installed on it, except with a MUCH shorter battery life (45 minutes with an Ambicom 802.11b card... ! ) and no keyboard. I'm thinking of selling my iPAQ and seeing what I can get off of eBay....
Copy and paste... is one of the best features of X. Select, and hit middle mouse to paste. I used a Mac OS X system, and that was what I missed the most - that's actually the one main reason that I ever reach to the mouse. (... but I should also be able to hit the windows key to bring up the K menu...)
Well, two things. Being the one I am for not reading the article:), exactly where is this all going? Into Miguel de Icaza's pockets? RMS's? Whose? And two, if you're looking for a good place to donate, donate to UserFriendly. There, we know where it's going. Great comic strip. A little cash-strapped though.
Yup. I, too was fucked out of my money, by their awful driver support.
About 4 years ago, when I was buying my new PC (for the time... 400MHz P2), I had never heard of nVidia. I had two options: nVidia card (cheaper) or ATi card (more expensive.)
Well, never having heard of nVidia, I went ATi. HAH! There were never any drivers for my poor ATi Rage LT Pro... MAYBE if I was lucky, I could get a half-decent framerate in the DirectX sample... but there was NO OpenGL acceleration at all!! Mind you, this was under 98, NOT 2000 or any other platforms that are especially difficult. The Linux drivers (UTAH-GLX) weren't much better either - every other launch of a 3D app, the machine would go down, requiring me to SSH in and reboot. (I couldn't just restart the X server, that didn't work. ARRRGGHHH!)
But, we also had another machine with an ATi card, that time a P2-450 with (I believe) the same card, except with digital out. That machine ran 2000. Well, there were drivers once, all right... the "recommended" drivers were the ones that came with 2k (they said it themselves!), and THEY SAID that those drivers didn't provide acceleration. So, they also had the "alternate" drivers. I gave those a shot - couldn't hurt anything, no? I grabbed those. Now, I have an ATi logo sitting in the taskbar, allowing me to adjust nothing since it's a LCD flat-panel. It looked promising... I ran my little app, Snake3D. The machine locked hard. "#$!%!!" I remember not even trying DirectX, and I immediately went back to the software drivers.
So, learn from my fuck-ups, and don't buy it until you see it running in your favorite OS (whatever it may be), running your favorite game. (Preferably something graphically intensive - make sure it's not software rendering, and turn it to high quality.)
Or, if you just want to screw off ATi for fucking everyone else off with high-priced cards and missing drivers, go for a GF4. You don't need a duallie GFX card anyway.:)
that this says "Apache: Apple Blacklists "Rumor Promoting" Publications" Folks, although Apache may now run on OSX, this should be Apple. [mandatory complaint about suckage of editors here]
Yes, I realize that. Sure, it's kinda cool. Now if they had done something OTHER than just recompiling, like a little bit of porting to get it to run on... say... NewOS (ok, bad example. pick something with a network stack and try again.), that would be REALLY/.-worthy.
now I see it from the flamers' perspective... WOO-HOO. Oh looky looky, someone said the word "Linux". Let's post it on Slashdot! Whoah, someone actually downloaded a file, ran configure, and built a binary? Like everyone else in the world does? WOW!... Ok. I'm not trying to be flamebait here, but... it's that easy../configure --prefix=~/package/usr make make install tar czvf apache.tgz ~/package/*... and presto-chango. You have a file called apache.tgz, which you unzip in / and you have apache./me ducks from the mods, and hopes for well-done M2...
EXACTLY THE SAME. So true - except I didn't actually get a mac. I built my PC instead, and I'm (close to) kicking myself. The iMacs are so inexpensive - I just want an iMac with no monitor, but a VGA output!
Oh boy. Another MP3 player in hardware. Like that hasn't been done before. Here's what this is: it's an MP3 player draining power from the GBC, and just displaying images and using it for control. Sorry folks - it's not decoding on the 4mhz z80 or anything like that. I'm guessing it's gonna put a mighty strain on power control, cause flakeyness, bad sound output (even through it's plug), and shorten life. But then again, let's hope they prove me wrong!
In other news, there has been an upsurge of telemarketers calling, even unintentionally on landline phones, asking if the user is stranded on a mountain and would like to buy minutes...
the only reason SOME (not the majority!) of tech-savvy fans don't buy CDs is because they are also YRO (o == online OR offline...) savvy - if the artists and labels would stop trying to screw off their fans' backup abilities (not necessarily rights), then they would sell more CDs. I'd wager a bet that it's only some little kiddies that wouldn't buy the CD anyway that are using P2P, and the rest don't buy CDs because of the above. Hey, and if P2P didn't exist, then they would probably start screwing off radio stations. And makers of tape recorders/players (Betamax and VHS, anyone??)
"Amen." Most definately - I am an active member of the DCDev scene - it is truly an amazing console. And if emulation isn't your "thing", and you have something morally against ROMs, those aren't the only things on DreamCast. There's my Snake3D port, which is currently pretty ugly, but works, there's c99's 3D Pong clone, and Dan's Feet of Fury. Plus, there's Linux and NetBSD, not ot mention the homebrew KallistiOS. And all for free... Also available at DCEmu.
