Would it ever be normal for this to appear on/.? "Oh, I just stuck a card in my iBook and after I ported drivers to it's nice... open source... UNIX... core *pauses to watch geeks salivate*, I got it slashdotted." If it weren't Apple, this wouldn't happen. And why are there now 8 different "Apple" topics? And the Aqua theme?? Thank you.
This is not a troll. Or at least it wasn't intended that way. It's just an (admittedly off-topic) observation.
Slashdotting one overseas link might be OK, but come on, slashdotting the link to.au AND to.jp?? And of a major telecom provider?? *Server lights on fire* "Hey, where'd my call go??!!"
I've been lagging/not lagging off and on on IRC, about 83ms-100ms pings to google (slightly above normal), apparently there was a big outage or something because when I came back my BNC running on my router had disconnected. For a few minutes or so, I lagged horribly on IRC and AIM, and had no ping anywhere...
But that's not very newbie-friendly... The newbie doesn't wanna see "login: ", the newbie wants to see a big graphical "Welcome! Enter the username you set up when you installed: " or something like that... or maybe that's just me.' --j

iPAQ touchscreen dies. Send you a box, stick iPAQ in box, shipper picks up... and then it differs from there. HPAQ bitches about how Linux is loaded on there. They try to charge $150. They send iPAQ back. I replace bootloader with CE bootloader. I send it back. They say "We found Linux." I say "Update the problem description! They say "Ok, fixed." They ship it back with a replaced stylus lock. Touchscreen still not sensing right. Finally, call and scream. Compaq says "Someone might get back to you within 48 hours." Later that night, someone calls: "We're sorry. Linux really was supported on the iPAQ. We're shipping you a new one." Courier arrives next day, delivering new iPAQ, and asking for old one. New iPAQ works.
From what I see of it, apparently he drilled his board in order to mount it. BAD IDEA!!! I'm willing to bet that there are solder traces that are under the board that you can't see. Cut one, and you can kiss the board goodbye - and if you're unlucky, you might've even killed other components in your system.
And uh - not to troll, but where does the "cool" part come in? From what I see, he eBayed for parts, spent more than you would've direct from Apple, and loaded it in an ATX case. Uh, yay?
Install Familiar on your iPAQ (you need a serial cable), then install opie (if it's not already installed.) Use ipkg to install zaurus packages. Then smirk and go "NYAHHHH" to all those trying to charge you money for it.:)
It all depends on your newbie. If your newbie is computer-literate, they can install SuSE 7.3 over FTP.
My newbie could get around Win32 adequately. His home box always seemed "slow." He saw KDE 3.0.3 running on my Gentoo box, and noted I was always raving about Linux and how he should try SuSE. So, he went home, and grabbed SuSE 7.3 bootdisks, on his own. He then did everything the installer asked - I just gave him some names of IRC clients and the name "KDE", and he installed it all himself. And that was YaST1. (Which IMHO was a better package selector in ncurses, but apparently it works nicely again in 8.1's YaST. I've installed a 7.2 and 7.3, ran 8.0 for some time, but I've just recently installed Gentoo. I love it:) But that's getting a little OT... )
In any event, later, SuSE apparently installed sendmail so he could send email, and he could run pine and successfully send me email.
So is he a brighter newbie than normal? Or is Eugenia a dumber newbie? I think that SuSE gets high marks in terms of usability for me - my one gripe about 7.3 was that it didn't start XDM/KDM/GDM automagically. (I love that word...) It was fixed in 8.0. And it used YaST2 for installation under X or some FBDev... it was a dream to upgrade from 7.3 to 8.0. I just hit "upgrade", fed it its 7 CDs (HEH), and it went. He's a convert now. (I've been a convert for 4 years - now I only boot win2k if there's a game that I wanna play - WineX is helping with that, love it already! - or... well.. I don't boot win2k otherwise!)

I can only think one thing, being the typical paranoid slashdotter... E. T. Phone Home! And then get caught by the cops!
I think it's just a few "fixes" to make people download it, then it phones home.

Not any particular 'sploit, but on the page, IIS is THE NUMBER ONE vulnerability for Windows boxen.
Like Mr. Valentine said, "[Microsoft's] products are not engineered for security". Or something like that.

I can see it now, Lik-Sang's homepage, obviously hacked by Microsoft... "Hacked by Borgese"
(in case you don't get the joke, Borg == M$, and some Chinese hacker defaced a lot of web pages with the text "Hacked by Chinese)
