    No, it is about profit. The RIAA is trying to crush P2P because of their mistaken belief that every download is a lost sale and that nobody who downloads ever purchases a CD.

    170GB isn't that big and people routinely run far more critical stuff without any kind of exotic seti@home-like distribution. What's really inexcusable is the fact that a power failure caused database corruption that turned a 2 minute power outage into major downtime.

    Making prank calls to 911 is both stupid and dangerous. I somehow doubt if you'd be so inclined to dismiss it as a "prank" if you were unable to get through to 911 while one of your loved ones were having a heart attack because some schmuck sent out a virus that tied up the lines.

    This is something that richly deserves jail time. Your "corporate crimes" comment is pretty nonsensical.

    If you're 12 it might seem like a prank, and you don't want to ruin the kid's life but hit him hard enough that he realizes that what he did is dead serious and never thinks of doing it again. He certainly deserves to be punished, but not as severely as a 43 year old who should be capable of fully understanding the consequences of his actions.

    1. Since when is making money bad and something that needs "rationalizing"?
    2. Assuming he posts stuff that is relevant to people looking for asbestos stuff, he certainly is providing a valid service. If he makes money in the bargain, good for him. His visitors get the information they want, google gets clickthrough revenue and the lawyers get the exposure they're advertizing to get. Nobody's being cheated here.

    The word nuclear comes from the same place in both cases... a nuclear reaction happens in the nucleus of an atom and NMR is magnetic resonance with the nucleus. The problem, like the grandparent said is that people are terrified of the word nuclear and will raise a ruckus without even bothering to understand what its all about.

    There have always been internets. An internet is simply several LANs connected via IP routers. Somewhere along the line one big huge internet formed that we refer to as the Internet (notice the capitalization). Today other internets are usually referred to as "intranets".

    Nobody is suggesting that Microsoft is going to fold up. Just that they won't occupy the kind of dominant position that they do today. That certainly has happened in IBM's case... remember the days when the phrase "IBM PC or compatible" was commonplace? IBM is still a very large, very successful company but they're just one of many players now instead of the clear leader. I would be very surprised if the same didn't happen in Microsoft's case.

    Just think about where it would leave Microsoft if Longhorn gets the ho-hum reception that MSN search got, and it is unable to continue to prevent PC manufacturers from shipping other OSes (or OS-less PCs) when OEM contracts come up for renewal.

    Its certainly not a stretch to see Microsoft fall from where they are. They certainly have room to fall pretty far and still remain a very profitable and successful company... just without the kind of dominance they have at the monent.

    I don't know about Norwegian law, but here in the United States, making such false claims in court or in an affidavit would make you guilty of perjury which is a felony and can get you stiff fines and lots of jail time.

    I realize that this is Slashdot and you are therefore entitled to mindless knee-jerk reactions, but this only applies to TRADEMARKED keywords and PAID RESULTS. Therefore SCO can't buy adwords so that their ads show up when you search for IBM.
