I can HONESTLY say I can notice a difference up to 100fps framerate differences. I am not kidding. We have been playing games like this so long, it is only natural for people to adapt and get "used" to higher framerates.
IDs games have been used for years as a benchmark, and a basis for purchasing beter hardware, and continue to support their game. They can throw that out the window now.
I think if they MUST cap the framerate, then at least try to put it around 85. I understand the reasoning, I just wish there was a workaround.
However, from my understanding, this is NOT a "twitch" shooter, so it probably really doesn't make that much of a difference.
Only thing you DON't have in this setup is a personal DB like Access, but do you really need that? I also havn't recommended anything specific to your work.. that is up to you.

..Thinking In Java IS a great book, but I also think Ivor Horton's "Beginning Java" is another perfectly suited book. There is a 1.4 edition out now. I simply cannot praise "Beginning Java" highly enough, it is the book I used to teach myself. Sometimes he is very verbose, but he certaintly gets the points across.
You could do what you want easily with Batch files and the DOS Net Send command, or some coding to kick off that command line, and more advanced features.
We have PLENTY of generic memory moving, scriptable, and interpreted languages that can all perform the same command line batch processing.
I think we need a language that not only performs those operations but is built with Cross-platform GUI design in mind. I don't know HOW or even it it is simply another part of the standard libraries, but I think you you REALLY want you rlanguage to be successful it should be able to hook into existing GUI APIs and/or implement its own with ease and consistancy. If anything a strong enphasis of a GUI library is a must have.
Delphi (MAYBE VB) is the closest thing I have seen that allows this. Yes I know the "language" is object pascal, but the IDE allows for quick and semi-graceful GUI design.
In addition to that if you could implement a pointerless environment with automatic garbage in a FAST way it would be helpful...but allowing for manual overrides if necessary.
Damn.. I didn't make much sense... basically code first thing in the morning, no warm-ups, no distractions, just code. Then read the web or e-mail. It seems to work better for me.
I find that opening the bug list and simply pick one and start then is MUCH more productive than reading any e-mail or web sites first thing in the morning. I still grab a coke first thing, but have found that if I read e-mail or any other tak first thing, when my head is somewhat clear, I am MUCH more efficient, and can usually get on a roll easier and have most of my work completed before lunch. It feels good to have a somewhat clear concience. In addition to this method I have found I can think much better. I feel distracted and n olonger want to "work" after I browse the web or read e-mail. It just works better for me. No warm-ups, just...code first thing...maybe after you grap some caffiene.. I am usually doing a full get from the repository while I am grabbing the caffiene.

This is simply a great example of how the liberal "individualists" are more concerned with form over function. VW + Apple, how much further left can you get? The IPOD and the VW Bug are great products but they both share the same problem / selling point -- they are WAY overpriced. It makes no logical sense to purchase either on of them for any reason other than the way they look (or in reality how it makes YOU look -- a different individualist type that is different, just like everyone else).
Anyway, I have karma to burn. I said what I think. Bring on your pink flames made from tissue paper you liberal pussies.
"So far each Intel-based laptop I have looked at is both grossly over-decorated (Compaq, Toshiba) and made of cheap flimsy materials (Dell), or has the combined problem of being overpriced and under-powered - with external bays for everything (Sony)."
um.. wtf? Talk about bias. I think someone already made up their mind.
You can say all you want about Dell Leptop, but I have seen them go through HORRENDOUS physical tourture, and still be running fine. And the man that owned it had Win98 on it (you could possibly be a judge of character and you get an idea of the torture there based on that observation).
I have heard NOTHING but good things for Toshiba laptops. I am tinking about purchasing one for my next computer (between that and the Dell).
As for being overpriced....O you LIKE being monopolized, price gouged, and reamed by the maker of the "other" processor.
Um, if you work in the IT industry it may be your belief that technology can suck up MORE time than you used to have. F*cked up network, e-mail. Faster computer and management expects more. Telephones and faxes, cell phones. You are EXPECTED to work constantly. Way back when you had a day to THINK abotu what you were going to write, and write it and wait for the response in the mail. In the meantime you would't have to worry about piddly things.
Yes, technology has made our quality of life better, yes we live longer, yes we don't have to work as hard to accomplish the same amount of work. BUT, now you are expected to get MORE done in the same amount of time, menaing the number of simultaneous projects in the back of your head doubles, and stress increases, and you work more hours.
Instead of eating dinner after you put away the tractor, many people spend 2 hours/day in their vehicle just getting to and from work.
