Not to say that professors aren't right, but I took my bachelors in CS a few years ago, and for the most part I did not attend class (obviously sometimes I went, but on average, I did not). This includes some history electives I took, and philosophy.
I passed everything by simply reading the supplied material, which is the same as what the professors were teaching. I found the professors job was to try and massage that information so people could understand it, and sometimes elaborate on it, but for the most part you can do quite well by just reading the material.
So, I think the whole thing is kind of stupid and a waste of money and time. I could have just read books and got the same degree. I think the education systems shouldn't concentrate so much on retention, and instead focus on comprehension.
The main thing I got out of university was growing up, which was more valuable. Maybe that was just my experience, I don't know.
While I don't disagree with you, I'm curious what exactly you're basing this on. Is there some case of where a non-open source company went after some open source software via patents and lost?
I see a lot of comments saying to delete your account.
Personally I have an FB account but it doesn't really have any personal information.. Just the school I went to (which anyone could find by googling my name anyways) and my "friends." The only reason I have it is to once in a while get updates on people I havnt seem in years.
There's no privacy concern; there's nothing private of mine on it. Why don't people (as in,/. Users) do this more often than full out cancelling their account? I don't get it.
are.. are you really comparing twitter to IRC?
only on slashdot would someone boil something down to it's most basic function, and then compare it to something else based on that criteria. sometimes developers need to pay a little more attention to the little things, even if it feels irrational.
You are the worst thing in the world. Fear begets fear. But why do i even bother, you're not reading this, already your mind is looking to see where you can attack my simple insult, perhaps with a firearm.
Are you seriously suggesting someone type out a book as a way to relieve their ethically-bound guilt? I mean, there are extremes, and then there is typing out a fucking book. Are you insane? Seriously. Sometimes I wonder what is wrong with some geeks, to be so blind as to take something to such an extreme. The sad part is that you're semi-serious, if not all.
What if something was just so fucking awesome it really didn't have any bad reviews? Then you'd miss out on potentially the most fantastic product ever. Fail
Uh.. I don't know what you're talking about. I've been here for 2 weeks now, in Tokyo, all over including less "touristy" areas. I'm 6'3", blonde hair, green eyes, and nobody gives a shit. I'm more ignored than anything. The other reply to your post, about Tokyo being different "now", is perhaps true? I havn't been here before this year, so who knows, but they definitely do not view foreigners as anything special or picture-worthy these days.
It's great, right up until the business men blow up in a drunken rage, which happens a lot. I'm here right now, in Japan, and it happened last night. Try riding the last subway train on Friday night, you'll see. That whole "keep their inner self locked up" is true, but it also leads to a big ass pile of shit and high suicide rate. Is that really that good?
You live in the same world that most of those who visit slashdot are in: geek world. You notice the smallest thing about linux, such as netbooks selling OEM with linux. The average person does not visit slashdot, nor do they buy a new computer that often.
Seriously, you want to get the masses on linux? Then market the thing. Where's the TV ads during the superbowl? Everyone knows who Microsoft is, everyone knows what Windows is. A lot of people now know what Apple and MacOSX are, and soon more will. Marketing is key, and it's what linux misses the most. I won't even get into the multiple distribution chaos that is linux either. When linux is "Linux v3.0", and that's it, and it has everything, and you can choose your UI and stuff after just getting that one thing, and it supports all major hardware out right now, and it is marketed to joe six pack, well then you'll see your revolution. But not a fucking day before. Apple will win before linux ever does, just for this reason.
I had the exact same problem with the WR** from Linksys, and other routers (D-Link comes to mind). I now have a Linksys RV042 (it actually says Cisco on it as well), and I have not had to reboot this router once. The problem is it doesn't have WiFi in it, so I do also use a Linksys WAP54G (which is not a router, just an access point) and this also does not require a reboot. I realize this is a little extreme, being that the RV042 is for VPN routing (which I have to use anyways), but it is an excellent answer to the rebooting problem, even if the power lines are "dirty" (note: all of these routers have used the same powerbar & outlet, so that's been constant through the 'testing').
I think you missed an option. They could also wage a holy war against the aliens, deeming them agents from hell. If you really think about it, that's actually the most likely course humanity will take when presented with intelligent beings from outer space. Maybe, something like Doom? I want a BFG.
I have to disagree with your Win32 API calls comment. I am a professional.NET developer, and I've been using it since 1.1. I primarily use 2.0 right now, though I have used 3.5 quite a bit too. I've made large enterprise web applications and medium sized winforms applications. I have never had to use Win32 API calls. I would say the biggest problem here is that a lot of people just don't know what.NET is capable of, as in there's a lot of libraries not referenced by default in the.NET library, and some things are put in weird namespaces. That said, if you were doing something very specific, then it's understandable, but for the most part you should never need to make unsafe Win32 calls.
I'm married, have no kids (by choice), and you're an idiot. I own a car, I eat out almost every other night with my wife, we travel, buy pretty much whatever we want. No I'm not rich, no my family isn't rich, I make good money but it's a simple matter of a) not being burdened by a mortgage, b) understanding when a lease, rent, or something is a far better option when the rest of your money is making 20% in investment, and c) instead of saying "how can i save money", saying "how can I make money". Sure, you save up for your dreams, eat your fucking beans, I'll be over here enjoying my dreams right now, and still build a "future", if you wish to call it that.
wah wah some retard posted a whiney response about whiners in a whiney thread, and now i'm whining about that. actually, i'm curious how you can say they're "just starting out and testing the waters in an area that is very complex". Ya, cuz PDA cell phones havn't been around for that long, or the iPod.
Apple: Guys! Guys! This SDK is really fucking complicated. It's got like, a phone, and a fucking ipod, in one! And touch! Jesus murphey. This is some uncharted shit, we better test the waters and spend 6 months releasing a beta SDK that is broken. Maybe after a full year you can actually make something for it.
Right, so we'll just use the emulator forever, shall we? Hard to develop when we can't even test it on the fucking units. Seriously, why bother "releasing" an SDK if you didn't even put in a visual designer until last week, and still are unable to put it on actual units? Nice "release".
I see all these posts about how bush has such a low approval rating and what have you. But you know, it takes more than 1 person to do stuff like this. He's not some evil genius sitting in the white house plotting up shit. It takes hundreds if not thousands of different people in the administration to make shit like this happen. So your problem in corruption and rejection of the constitution isn't "bush", it's everyone else too.
Uh, I guess they've never heard of the DS? Except it's currently the number one selling "console" (yes I realize it's a handheld). It uses a game cartridge. Nice obsolete device, idiots.
You're not the "average" user. You know how I know?
a) you're on slashdot
b) you used && in your comment, perhaps by mistake
c) "I am not at all into social networking."

probably because he just made up that example to have something to post. it's a common thing that happens here.
yes

I KNEW IT!

You can't lose what you don't put in the middle. But you can't win much either.
I think you missed an option. They could also wage a holy war against the aliens, deeming them agents from hell. If you really think about it, that's actually the most likely course humanity will take when presented with intelligent beings from outer space. Maybe, something like Doom? I want a BFG.
It was 14 in Canada, or Ontario at least, but last week it was bumped to 16. I don't think many people knew that.
Wouldn't the cracking groups just remove the code that does the checking? That's what they do for CD-cracks anyways, I'd assume the same for this.
