You might be right, but *which* linux will it be? Why don't the linux distros all combine power to have 1 base where people can choose. KDE or X, gnome or konq, etc etc. This retarded split just confuses people. And what about Starcraft II, and other games?

You can say what you want, but I still don't see the difference. Vista blows, don't get me wrong, but Linux is not being marketed or built the right way to be "sold" (i don't mean for money) to the public.

You probably have no friends, going out is expensive, and on that salary there's no way you could afford it. Did you buy new clothes? I can live off of 12k a year too, but I'd live like shit, have no memorable experiences, and revolve my life around work. That's great. So, you're full of shit.

I never understood why people (or small business) decide to incorporate, it's the worst decision you could possibly make, especially if you're a 1 man company. Leave it for the enterprise.

No offense, but it looks like a piece of shit, aesthetically. This is like saying "hey I can get integra type R that goes twice as fast as your Bentley for half the price!". Well great, except a) nobody gives a shit, and b) people obviously like the bentley design better. Style and "coolness" (i'm not talking about image either, i'm talking about enjoying the simple experience of dialing) is something that people seem to be willing to pay for, judging by all the sales.

Don't give me that uninformed shit either, I'm quite sure most people know how crippled and what features are missing from an iPhone well before they purchase it.

While there is nothing wrong with your statement or sentiment, I think this is a point that should be GREATLY noted by linux advocates. In most business scenarios, people do -not- want to dick around with their operating system. They want it to "just work" (sorry for the Apple relation). Make Linux as easy to use as Windows or OSX (no, even in Ubuntu you still have to dick around), and you will see the desktop market take it seriously.

You completely neglected to mention Windows Mobile. While you may think it's a joke, or whatever, it's a rather a powerful platform (.NET CF 2.0 and 3.5 anyways), and is used in quite a few corporations for mobile push email, CRM, inventory management, etc etc.

Japan has fiber, so why don't we? I know the arguments about the infrastructure, but at the very least "we" (the slashdot crowd) should be trying to get better internet than the current slow-ass capped ADSL/Cable crap available to the masses.

I get it, you're well off, you like science, you like to stay on slashdot because in your opinion it represents the more "successful" members of society. You know, here in Canada at least, I don't take the bus because it looks pretty shitty outside (i.e. cold) waiting for a bus that might take up to 10-15 minutes. Top that with frequent stops, a route that doesn't go exactly where I need to go, and a subway system that is severely limited (Toronto) as to where it stops makes me think the only people who use the transportation system are those who cannot afford cars.

When using public transportation is just as painless and fast as taking my car, I will use it. Until then, I'll enjoy being warm and getting to/from my destination directly with no stops.

I believe that if we did find aliens, well, you should worry more about them than us. Humanity is a war machine, a lot of our best progress has been made in times of war. We are built for it, we dream it. You can look at a lot of things and gain similar results: Ender's game, Starcraft, Warcraft, etc etc.

Who's to say real aliens could ever dream of such a war hungry race?

If there is any life out there, we'd probably be the ones doing the conquering. I mean, if "we're" (I don't live in the USA, but those who do are certainly still human) willing to preemptively attack Iraq, then why not another planet? One which could pose an even greater risk than WMDs?
