After that the design goes to samsung, and its manufactured by samsung. I think samsung uses TSMC fab.

So if apple wanted to have a 22nm chip it could
    1. Build a Fab(invest many billions)
    2. Pay TSMC and partner with them in tech (invest some billions).

Return on investment may not justify the cost.

As you go smaller, you do gain an area and cost advantage, but you also run into lot of issues related to physics. So 28->22nm is not easy, and its really commendable Intel has done it.

    These cost 20$ for a 77mm filter.

With filter on, point your cam at sun, shoot with 1/1000 or faster and then quickly point camera away.

In India, if you read the the first line of my comment, you would know.
WE had the "Green revolution" in 60s and 70s, but right now, yields are mostly stagnant, with slow growth rate.

  9. Actually no on Is Agriculture Sucking Fresh Water Dry? · · Score: 3, Informative

With the passing of time, local crops have dwindled due to inter regional trade, and supply demand constraints. For example, in arid regions of India, instead of wheat "Jowar, Bajra, Ragi...." etc., were grown which use much less water. but since majority eat wheat, in the interest of business, farmers shifted to Wheat, which uses more water. In other regions, which never grew rice(due to lack of water), canals saw increase in rice production, and movement of local populace to wheat and rice, instead of the local cereals which consume less water.
So everybody does not need to eat rice. Rice and wheat users can have other cereals added to their diets, and increase demand, and some cultivation area can be reclaimed, and balance restored.

Another aspect is hybrids. Many high yield varieties(which in the long run are not all that more beneficial) often require higher water content. In irrigated regions, people often switch to those varieties. In the short run you have better profits, but since these are not as resistant to local conditions(in some cases), it also means increased pesticide expense.

So with intelligent Farming, and growing crops actually suited to the region, water usage can be minimized.

Apart from that, there is the irrigation question. Using drip irrigation drops water usage by over 60-70%. We have used it on an piece of land where irrigated water was a scarcity, and illegal mining killed local rivulets and creeks. Due to very less quantity of ground water, and only perennial source being an artesian well, we had two options, stop growing, or use wisely. thanks to some govt subsidies and support, we were able to setup a drip irrigation system, which resulted in low water usage, and now we have surplus water.

Unfortunately, much of agriculture, even in developed world, does not move to this kind of savings unless there is a sword hanging on the head. Countries like Israel have water shortage, so they have moved to intelligent use. If other places where shortage is not there yet, also move, it will result in water saving.

Lastly, in many areas, rain water is not stored effectively, and a lot goes waste(flows into the sea). If a large part of that can be channeled to groundwater using recharge zones, it will replenish groundwater which can actually help people survive a year or 2 of dry season.

That said, other than conservation, many places can also have strict policies to block untreated industrial waste flowing into rivers, which will result in higher fresh water availability

Lastly, the Nex-7 sensor is truly a class apart. I wonder how could they control noise in such a densely packed sensor.

A real case I observed recently.

A leading motorcycle manufacturer did a contest in Asia (over 6-7 countries). On their webpage, write some thing about yourself(related to touring). Depending upon the number of "votes" winner will be declared, and then the winner gets a 20,000$ bike or something like that.

The lead guy led till the second or third last day. I followed his posts on FB asking people for votes and all.
And then bam, on the last two days, an unknown came up with largest number of votes.

Most of his friends accused the organizer of rigging votes. After all, how could somebody with almost nil votes come on top.

What they do not realize, for 1000$ you can actually buy tonnes of votes from these crowdturfing sites.

For 1 cent, you can get one guy to vote, so 100,000 votes is quite a bit.

For a random guy, not clued to this, getting 5000-10000 votes can be an achievement, and beating 100,000 votes are next to impossible.

I have seen this happening in many online voting contests where prize money is huge.

It does not matter if you get your fix from a USA company or an Indian company. As long as your fix is this per hour maximise billing kind of chappie, you will get screwed up results.

I have seen some companies do sucessful outsourcing. They went to companies, and "rented" their employees for a fixed time. eg 6 months. For 6 months the employee was theirs to do as they please. They also made sure that they interview the person before hiring as a temp.

DSLRS, Micro 4/3. APS-C interchangeable lens cams(NEX series).... all have their strengths and weaknesses.
So... first decide what system suites you.

For example, is video very important....? In that case Panasonic Micro 4/3 is worth looking at.
If low noise is important, then larger sensors are needed.
For example, I often do 10 min+ exposures. So I can never go Micro 4/3 way.

dpreview.com is a much better site to research "which camera".
    Slashdot is not.

Unlike a video card, where you can measure "scores", in photography, measurement is very subjective.

For example, one camera has a 5fps burst other has 3fps. The 5fps one gives you good pics upto ISO 1600, the 3fps gives you good pics upto ISO 3200. What to choose....? These are the questions you will be asking yourself.

So go to a photography site, read reviews, read peoples opinions., See what kind of photography you want. Is low noise a must, or is fast speed necessary. What kind of lenses you want. Is having cheaper wide angles important or cheaper zooms important. Will you ever shoot birds.... and so on

But today, I can leave the main road, drive in the flat laying down my GPS track. If I am unable to find an exit point, all I do is retrace my track.

I has also helped me explore some high altitude himalayan deserts. No roads are marked, just a black space showing me my "track". By looking at the compass, and having a town on the other end as my "destination" I can plan my route by hit and trial.

For example, I recently went to a lake system called Kyun Tso in the himalayas.
As I left the last village, the track bifurcated into multiples. I took the vehicle up the wrong track and ended up on a 4700m high flat plain.
But no panic, we took some pics, admired the view, and then followed our track back to the fork, and then took the other one.

So we could actually "explore" without fear of getting lose 5000m above sea level.
Considering, some locals do this once a week or even less, if you get lost up there, help can be days away.

But GPS allows you the freedom to be an explorer.

I quickly have mapped all that on openstreetmap, and future offroaders can follow my tracks easily.

Then there is the dark side.
When I am in US, I am tempted to let the navigation app to do my routing, and often I end up on roads I do not want to be on. For example, a freeway 20kms long can be cut short by a 5km path within the town, the app chooses that, and I end up spending 1 hour in traffic jams.
So yes, its good, and bad.

Last but not the least, there was a story some time back "Death by GPS".
This is what you get for blindly trusting your navigation app.

So best way is to use your GPS as an informer, or a walking stick, not as your crutch.

People used to buy cheap alarm clocks(working of AA batteries lasting a month or 2).
These used to cost 300-400 INR (8$) and had brisk sales.
Then mobile tariffs well, and so did cost of mobile phones. Everyone had a mobile. At 20$ it was affordable, and even people in lower middle income groups had one.
The alarm clock became obsolete. Nobody wanted an alarm clock, and most companies had to downsize, reduce production, close factories. Many companies even closed down.
These companies competed with each other, and tried to outdo competition.
But suddenly, they faced with a competitor with whom they could not compete.

So is history repeating itself. 5 years down the line your mobile phone costing same as a handheld console, will perform equally, if not better. Only the loyalists will still buy a console.

Its high time console companies realize that they are not just competing with other mobile companies. Its the age of integration.
