  1. A few points on GMail for Domains vs. MS Live Office? · · Score: 3, Informative

I have beta tested both of these as well, and let me correct a few things here:

    1. This is BS. I am on a Mac, and my domain is administered while I'm in Camino. I'm logged in right now, the URL is https://domains.live.com/Manage/managedomains.aspx and it works just fine.

    2. I have used Google's domain hosting as well, and it's nice, but it's very minimalistic at this point. It is cool that you can change the Gmail logo to your company's logo though.

As for users signing in, yes, they do have to sign in via hotmail. It says so RIGHT IN THE ADMIN AREA. This guy couldn't find the big text on the left side that says "Users may access their email accounts by signing in to http://www.hotmail.com./"

WEAK. This review needs to be nixed. No digg.

Sorry, Builder, but all this shows is that incompetents shouldn't be left in charge of IT. I would say it demonstrates the exact opposite of what you say. Clearly the city manager is unqualified and ignorant. The open source project helped him -- for free -- even when he threatened litigation! Ultimately, CentOS solved the problem for him too, outdoing the ISP he presumably pays.

I would argue that this furthers the cause significantly, and as an aside, encourages towns to take IT seriously.

The PHB in question is the city manager. According to him: "My door is always open and I answer all calls."

So... here's his info: City Manager Jerry A. Taylor, and his email address: citymgr@cityoftuttle.org.

Note that I am not "exposing" anything, all of this info comes directly from the publically available cityoftuttle.org website.

PS. I can't believe we fried centos.org but not cityoftuttle.org.

I want to email executables to people on occasion. It's easy. It works. Well, normally it works, unless you're using gmail.

Or Outlook. Or several other capable email programs. Essentially, your suggestion is that general security should be sacrificed because lazy people sometimes want to send executable files? That's weak, friend.

Since most people run Windows, and most people have file extensions hidden (a STUPID default), most people will think anna_kournikova.jpg.exe is an image, and open it.

Email programs SHOULD block exe files. If you are smart enough to send an exe that makes sense, you're smart enough to rename it. Period.

  9. Re:It is fast? on Mozilla Camino 1.0 Released · · Score: 0

Camino uses Gecko. Safari uses Webkit, which is based on HTML. This is really not a question of browser as much as it is of the rendering engine behind it. Browsers like Flock and Shiira are based on Gecko and Webkit respectively, so you should expect similar results. Firefox, incidentally, is also based on Gecko.

For what it's worth, many people I know describe Opera as being significantly faster than Gecko, WebKit, and MSHTML (the rendering engine behind IE).

For one, it doesn't include XUL, so it doesn't support extensions. However, the Cocoa integration is much better, so it looks and feels like a real Mac application. It's gorgeous, about as pretty as Firefox for OS X with Firefoxy widgets. It's fast. And in my experience, it doesn't bleed RAM like Firefox does.

An app is "universal" when it runs on OS X for PowerPC *and* OS X for Intel. It does not mean it runs on other OSes, and incidentally, they do not.

Eh... no. Anyone who knows anything about search engine optimization would tell you you're crazy. The fact is, if you're at all interested in Google's pagerank or in optimizing your position in any real search engine, then you know that the text anchored in your links matters BIG TIME to both you and the link to whom you are linking.

SEOs will tell you some simple tips:
    1. Keep your titles concise
    2. Put meaningful words in your hypertext anchors
    3. Name your pages appropriately (x.com/about/about.htm is better than x.com/index.php?page=about or x.com/?node=47)
    4. Do not repeat single tags like "title" for fear of being classified as spam
    5. Do not repeat meta keywords over and over again
    6. Do not overuse keywords in your page for fear of being classified as spam

The fact is, linking a noun is a BAD decision. Linking "CNN" to CNN or "article" to your article would be poor web formatting and a poor design decision.
