Sometimes, you might have to "pretend" that the software is installed.

As a first-level tech for a company in a different line of business, I'd just like to point out that I hate it when people do this. If you don't level with me as to what is REALLY going on, how the hell am I supposed to help?

I understand your point; some of the people I work with ARE clueless. But all too often I find myself with callers that think they know it all and won't let me lead the call. Even people that ARE clued in do this, and it's a bad idea. 95% of the time when people do this, it takes 5 times as much time to solve the problem because I have to argue them into listening to me.

The other 5%, when I know it's over my head, I don't act like I do know, and send it up to second tier. So people, remember, next time you call a phone shop, remember there's other people on the end of that line and give them the benefit of the doubt for at least two minutes or so.

    End of rant.

You know, it's funny, I am on forums with more normal moderation systems where nothing like this would ever happen. The moderators, even though they are the ONLY ones with any kind of editorial control over the boards, don't act like that.

Additionally funny how he just could NOT prevent himself from responding to the comments, even though not responding would have been the best denial.

The slasdot moderation system reminds me alot of someone I once knew that was a horrible communist idealist. He's currently being forced to re-learn how to make money in order to pay medical bills, and to stop giving away hosting services for free to everyone that comes along. He had all these great liberal ideals...but reality came along and squashed them.

I'm sure there must be other news sites out there, and I think I'm off to go find one. I never stick around in a system where the admins/moderators/wizards/ops believe that just because a place is free that it's alright to be an asshole.

Actually, no. The merchant gets paid. Even if there's no money in your account/credit line, the bank has to pay the merchant. So ultimately, the bank will take the loss if it can't recover the money.

Debit/Check cards come under Federal Reserve Regulation E. Your liability is limited to $50, as long as you notify the bank within a reasonable time.

I work in a phone shop for a major regional bank. I file Reg E disputes for customers on debit cards every day. My bank will also pick up the extra $50, like most do.

You do have rights, you just can't sit on them. Keep a paper register. Online banking is not a replacement for a register. Nor is personal financial software like Quicken. I mean it. A real physical pen and paper register. Reconcile your register with your monthly statements. Report any error or unauthorized transaction immediately. Not tommorow, not the next day, right away. Also contact the merchant IMMEDIATELY, if you can.

I can't stress how important it is to ACT right away. Every day I have to tell people 'Sorry, you're screwed' because they waited four or five months to complain about a possible error. The banks will and MUST protect you, but ONLY if you are watching out for yourself.

If our bodies worked the way we wanted, things would be very different. First, you'd get a huge boost of adrenaline so you could outrun the dog. Also, although your heart would speed up, you'd have no risk of a heart attack or other complications from overexerting yourself. You wouldn't get tired. And you'd be equipped with built in weapons for annihilating hostile canines.
You'd also never have to worry about getting nervous trying to talk to that new cutie at work, acne wouldn't exist, and we all be our ideal weight.
Our bodies, at best, make fair attempts at adjusting to situations, but they blow it as often as they get it right. Frankly, if our computers become as reliable as our bodies, I'm going to invest in pencils.

Everything becomes automatic and robotic, NOT because you're not required to be friendly and loving and a replacement for a real friend to the endless parade of humanity that funnels past you, BUT IN FACT BECAUSE YOU ARE REQUIRED TO. It's sick. Anytime I hear people bitch about how they are getting good customer service I have to restrain myself from screaming. NOBODY WANTS A REAL PERSON IN SERVICE. They want cheap and effective robots, and if machines can't do it, they'll demand zombie like humans that can.
