I studied CS in the 80s. The first language was LISP. I don't think we were taught any language that required explicit memory management. We did learn, of course, how a computer works from the silicon level and up.
On the other hand, it was impossible to do anything without learning C, so we learned C.
What people fail to realize is that the extinction of grazing animals will lead to extinction of the wildlife that depends on said grazing animals. That is the environmental effect that artificial "meat" would have. From an environmental point of view, such products are worthless.
I believe that mandatory helmets for anyone riding in a car (driver and passengers) would reduce injuries much more than mandatory helmets for bicyclists. There are many more of them and they are going much faster. It would also be more convenient, since the helmets can simply be stored inside the car when the car is parked.
That looks like a bunch of packages that use Oracle, a database which does not come in.deb packages, is not included with Ubuntu and tries to resist attempts to install it on Ubuntu.
I used the cheesemaking and pet breeding examples not because they are unavailable for Linux but because if they were, they would be closed source (as are the Windows versions) and hence not included with many distributions. An operating system which cannot accomodate any third-party applications is virtually useless. And no, I'm not saying that Linux is useless, precisely because Linux does accomodate third-party applications, and not by bundling everything in the vendor's preferred proprietary packaging format.
If you (and juergen) define "basic or intermediary needs" as "web, mail and a word processor" then you're right, but I don't think that's a valid definition. For many desktop users, the applications they would like to use are not available *at all* on Linux. Pet breeding software. Cheese making software. On Linux, you probably need to tinker with Wine and Windows applications that certainly do not come with the distribution any more than Oracle and Networker do.
And for servers, installing Oracle or Networker is certainly "basic or intermediary needs".
That's a remarkably stupid question. Because Networker or Oracle, for example, are not included with their distributions, perhaps? No distribution includes any replacement for those.
Actually, I joined the pirate party today because of this depressing trend. Apparently I'm not the only one, since the number of members stated on their home page is ticking up at a steady rate.
For the first time in more than 20 years, I am now a member of a political party. I went to http://www.piratpartiet.se/, followed the instructions and presto, I'm a member. I wouldn't normally support such a party, but things are not normal when Sweden is turning into China.
I believe that LCD TVs are taking over fast. If I go into any home electronics shop, the LCD:s cost the same as the CRT:s did last year, and the CRT:s are on sale.
Haven't you even dreamt of having your case double as a food/drink dispenser as well? Of course you have! Wouldn't it just be oh-so cool to have a bottle opener or a soda dispenser built into the case without having to do tedious and sometimes ridiculous amounts of modifications? I mean, the possibilities are quite endless really when it comes to being a dispenser and it wouldn't necessarily be all that hard.
The article is about a backup solution for Windows servers. The GP writes about a backup solution for Linux+Samba, which is often used as a replacement for Windows. How is that "totally" off topic?
I agree, the jokes should be subtle enough to fool at least one person. I like to read something, think long and hard about it, and still not be able to figure out if it's true or not. Like these ones:
Real or fake? I don't know. On the other hand, "First PC Virus Spreads to Humans" is so bad that there is no real reason to click the link except that every story on/. is a "joke" today.
Are you kidding? If you edit code on unix tabs are a nightmare.
I edit code on Unix all the time and have no problem with tabs.
Guys [1] usually fell into two categories, the electrical or mechanical.
Yep, those were the two categories I fell into.
Yes, Linux integrates great with Windows AD.
Vinyl is making a comeback because an analog LP is an attractive object in its own right. A CD isn't.
It looks like it's getting warmer.

My 1954 Volvo T24 tractor. And since it is still possible to get new spare parts for it, I expect it to run for quite a few more years.

I find it strange that this is "5, Insightful" when it is obviously meant as sarcasm.

In law, there are no problems that cannot be solved by more law.
Microsoft disn't invent Visual Basic, they bought it.
Nonsense, keep cramming stuff into my phone. I want a tricorder and I want it now. Until then, my Nokia Communicator will have to do.

Full answer: I want a tricorder.
Many (most?) professional make their living from playing live, with
record sales being inconsequential.

Linus Torvalds didn't start Open Source; he hasn't "stolen" anything; Linux is Free Software; and you are a stupid fuck.
